Look Binward, Angel

An upcoming by-election in Gorton and Denton has the British political class confronting, and failing to learn from, the fact that at some point someone has to govern. In a war of bins versus posts, they've decided to go all-out with posting, firing up the Anti-Corbyn Machine against Zack Polanski and failing to grasp why the Green Party might actually appeal to voters. And in order to understand this, we've assembled Riley, Hussein, and November to cut through the noise. We also discuss a new podcast entitled The Rest Is Prison, which hardly needs to be explained!

Is it actually a payday loan? My US bank did something like that a few years ago and it was just them giving me the money as soon as the ach posted but before it processed. Never paid interest or even opted in. They just emailed me one day and said hey you get paid on the 13th now congrats

Can I just say at the grocery store I work at there are Mr beast branded like.... Beef jerkies or maybe pepperette style meat sticks and every time I put them on the shelf I feel like I'm dissociating slightly

s
skedazzle · February 27, 2026

So, when you turn 18, I assume all your debt from the Mr Beast not associated with 666 certainly not on any way a dragon app is legally transferred from your sponsor and is then enforceable against you, correct? Nice to enter adulthood in extreme debt because of a string of Roblox microtransactions made when you were six This seems to me a significant legal grey area can you as a minor agree to enter into a contract that is only enforced when you become legally able to be party to a contract but agreed to prior? I think banks get around this by having you sign a new one when you are 18

s
skedazzle · February 27, 2026

Unless this isn't about the kids at all it's about opening a new vector of attack on the parents (or whoever is "sponsoring " teens 🤮)

j
jamin · February 27, 2026

I feel like I'm going crazy at the app part, I'm pretty sure I got a bank account/debit when I was like 12. It was at my parents bank so I'm sure that was how they got around the know your customer rule, but it was a real account that earned interest and everything. This is a solved problem!

J
Jimjam · March 1, 2026

Yeah I’m pretty sure I had a child saver account (that I couldn’t take anything out of) from age 8 or something that than graduated to a baby current account at like 16

New dog whistle I hadn't heard before. When reform lost Goodwin said it was because of 'sectarianism', in Britain this means a violent (at least in part) religious conflict with lots of terrorism. Basically what you were talking about.

Huh, a banking app where some adult other than your parents can set you up with financial independence. Certainly there is no sort of untoward reason non-parent adults might want to set u up with a way to send and receive money without their parent’s knowledge. I can’t imagine a single disgusting crime that would enable.

re: mr beast et al just slapping their names on warehouse surplus goods - this is explicitly how the "lunchbox with popular children's characters on it" market was started. the aladdin company had a bunch of unsold metal lunchboxes in the warehouse. they struck up a deal with cowboy actor hopalong cassidy and slapped a sticker with his likeness on the side. instant success, revolutionized the industry, etc etc etc. the smithsonian has one in its "american history" collection. just now with mister beast and fintech, you know?

payday loans + klarna + cryptocons are bad enough but with the sponsorship aspect step sounds like in practice it will end up literally multinational Mr.Beast-branded deets and squares franchise

Also wanted to add that, at least in Lake Cowichan, BC, Canada, no one wants to buy the Feastables chocolates. There have been two shopping carts full to the brim with the candy bars on deep discount outside the grocery store for weeks. Even the raccoons don’t want them.

it's fucking terrifying that our economic planners take these insane fairy stories seriously. Like you control the means of production the least you could do is understand what you're doing with it rather than sort of pointing it all over the place like a child with a nerf gun

Check out the Anti-Photography apparel. Its made with a special pattern and color that causes it to destroy any flash picture taken of it, especially at night. Back during Covid I had a facemask with that, and I loved it. Great for protests.

Re adversarial clothing: i have a jacket with a qr code that has the eicar test string. Its a non-virus that virus scanners treat as real, so wherever your software stores the decoded info gets grabbed by antivirus and deleted.

Polly Toynbee is the funniest Guardian columnist and I will die on that hill. If you go back to 2024 all her articles are like "KEIR STARMER IS A DIGNIFIED SOCIAL DEMOCRAT AND HE'S GOING TO FIX ALL THE PROBLEMS WOOOOOO!!!" and now whenever she writes about labour it's always with a tone of genuine bafflement "why has my best friend, Keir Starmer, personally betrayed me :(((("

V
Vanessa P · February 25, 2026

2024: "Celebrate: we have waited so long for the routing of the Tories. A rare moment of pure political joy" 2025: "Enjoy your victory, Nigel Farage - because it could also be the start of your downfall" 2026: "Is No. 10 seeking its own destruction? Why else would it botch its council plans and hand a victory to Farage?" Also bonus from 2024: "Europe is lurching right on immigration. Despite Farage and Sunak's best efforts, Britain will not follow." heheheheheheh

W
Wawawawa · February 25, 2026

Also, I'm a despicable continental so I may be misremembering this, but didn't the Corbyn defamation campaign end up... not mattering? Like, the Labour right just ended up throwing him out of the party formally for the same fabricated antisemitism bullshit that they're using to turn the country marginally more dictatorial now, right? It was never about any sort of public opinion. They can't really do that to Mattie Lubchansky, chairman of the green party, because it's not their party, unless they do something REALLY undemocratic. Can't wait for that contradiction to slow-cook their brains over the next few months.

V
Vanessa P · February 25, 2026

The defamation campaign along with a bunch of other things contributed to the shattering defeat in 2019, it was shockingly effective to the point where the nation's centrist dads genuinely still believe that Corbyn was a sort of mad Islamist. Like the BBC did an 'investigation' called 'Is Labour Antisemitic'. The ultimate result was to create an impression in the minds of much of the public that Corbyn was 'controversial' and 'just going a bit too far'
