The Bolsonaro Method feat. Greg Foley
We’re joined by Blood Work’s Greg Foley to discuss the ongoing wave of state violence in the United States, and think about what makes this time different and altogether more worrying. Also, we look at the Labour Party shooting itself in the head rather than ceding any control to non-Morgan McSweeneys… but before any of that we look at what’s happening in a country that dealt with its fascism problem properly.

It's very funny coming back to this episode in March, 2026 and hearing them say "jarring shift in tone" and being stuck wondering "I wonder which atrocity just happened when they recorded?" because there have now been so many that I have genuinely no clue which one of the things it could've been. EDIT: And I'm sure this will get progressively more confusing the later in 2026 it gets.
no but i would actually buy multiple kirked edition PEZ dispensers
incredibly sobering & clarifying analysis, girls. ty for helping me not lose my mind 🙏
Both of the ICE shooters were in federal law enforcement for a decade or more. These are not poorly trained people, or new recruits emboldened by Trump. This is the violence they *always* wanted to do, and now they are being *allowed* to do it more openly.
The Brazilian right is wearing a hospital gown, is clearly unwell holding onto an IV hanger as a cane, but they do have that BBL out there.
guys the BBC id actively now participating in trying to make Alex Pretti a antifa operator because he kicked a tail light on a ICE tactical rental car
Trash Futcher (sorry. I'm trying to delete it)
The Atlantic line is hilarious because the circle of Americans that: can read, are reading the Atlantic, and are reading it throughly enough to notice a contributor’s tone shift is so microscopically small. Not to say it is a bad point to bring up, but Americans (the voting base at large) just don’t read.
The US needs to dismantle the rusting and swaying security state apparatus before it collapses inwards but also no one really wants to have to say that.
[guy who's playing Fallout: New Vegas for the first time] yeah basically it's like how the NCR pissed off and wasted everyone's time and gave Cesar's Legion the momentum advantage and now House who represents techno-capital sees an opportunity to swap his alliance
Bolsonaro is the Brazilian Bob Ducca.
Fascism is Saturn coded, ask Jupiter what Zeus did to his father. He cut his balls off & locked him in Tartarus. Something that ought be done to all fascists.
Of course this happened in Brazil: https://youtube.com/shorts/feEMurpB0io?si=XgQDtlFpH57K2uuC
Civil war sure is breaking out in the US. Yes. It sure is. Anyway, make sure to subscribe to our other podcast.
Loving the Men In Black references here.
this one hit like the first time Adam Curtis went on chapo
Can I suggest the Vietnamese Dong as the official reserve currency of the podcast? Far more aesthetic than teh current Dinar
> US prints so much money to pay for Vietnam War it doesn't have any left to finish the Great Society > subsequent inflation crisis sends the US into a right wing spiral > engineered instability swaps out the global trade currency for the Vietnamese Dong total Viet Cong victory
Gee, the ending to this one was a bit much 😅 Maybe it’s just the privilege talking, but it doesn’t seem to me either that there’s any way to ‘prepare’ oneself for undefined future violence, or that trying to live in accordance with that Bukowski poem Nova quoted is any kind of a life. Everybody’s trying to ‘live happily during the war,’ since it’s a day for quoting poetry — what makes a difference is whether the bomb drops on your house or somebody else’s, but since you don’t have any say over that, what’s the use in ruminating on the possibility? Everybody’s going to end up dead in the end
This is all also a result of democrats being unwilling to confront the republican narrative about immigration, legal or otherwise. They have invented a problem that is the opposite of reality and we haven't told them to just shut the fuck up enough.
"Of course, any functioning state needs to be able to control its borders, but..." is a sentence beginning that I've read way too many times
Instead of Vice President Benjamin Butler the U.S. got Vice President Andrew Johnson. One of the all time bag drops.
There's something uncannily similar between Stephen Miller and Himmler.
Thanks, as always, for sitting with us amidst all this. It feels insane to go to work and pretend to keep functioning as normal. More surreal, I should say, with every passing day.
Watch some Wile Coyote cartoons? You son of a bitch I'm in!
I'm younger than Nova and I can still remember a time before the DHS. Trying to decide if this time really is different or if I'm just too online still, leaning towards this time is different and not just because it's white people this go round. I think there's a lot of non political people and definitely shitlibs who just knee jerk react to defending the police because they benefit/feel confident the violence won't apply to them/someone has to keep order/these are OUR bullies, etc. There's a lot of ground to cover to push the argument that the solution to the police is to build a society that's good for the people who live in it. Once it's the feds that illusion all goes away.
I’m excited to be able to witness my country do a Tiananmen Square
not so fun that the one country where a civil war would be utterly devastating to every single country on earth is the one where it happens to be kind of plausible because the population is already armed
we do already have a precedent from 2024 MAGA for using medical equipment as a kind of radical rightist ingroup signifier so the Bolsonaristas do have a precedent there
His final words were "Are you okay?" I am so far beyond constructive, a psychiatrist would have me sectioned. There is no Truth and Reconciliation Commission truthful or re-conciliatory enough, no morality to the justice the universe's ark deigns to bend towards, today.
This is insane. This song is about a fascist rally and November seems to have unwittingly name checked it https://youtu.be/r0nsfAnn5qM?si=hUj8K47WJ3Up8HId
A fresh ep biting me on the ass like a large flightless bird 🙏🏽
I think if I was in a group that resulted in me getting hit by lightning, I'd leave that group.
I think it's in Terry Pratchett's Small Gods that the local equivalent of Ancient Athens' debate forum has the best and most frequently used lightning rod/earthing system in the world, and a permanent faint scent of ozone Some people just can't be bothered taking the proper precautions before uttering sentences like 'And may the powers that be strike me down if I'm wrong, but-'
Anyone got a 20 on Erik Prince?
I think there was a movie about the future being Brazil. I forget what it’s called.
Last Action Hero.
No one has had the divine right less than bolsinaro
divine wrong as hell
I think the US is on its 5th republic already, it just has not had the decency to declare such. Let’s see, let’s count: we could start with the continental congress as one, and that would be fair but I won’t; the articles of confederation, that’s one; the constitution, that’s 2; sometime around 1830 and Jackson is 3 (reworking the compromise and avoiding a civil war right then and there); the civil war marks the end of 3 and the beginning of 4 (radical restructuring of the government and constitution); sometime around “the closing of the frontier” arguably ends 4 and the beginning of Spanish American war arguably begins 5; post WW2 through 2001, 2005, 2008, or 2026 (pick your poison) is 6; so this would make it the beginning of the 7th republic or arguably the 8th or higher. So, no less than the 3rd (constitution, civil war, now) and possibly more than 8
the curse of Bolsonaro is not transmissible enough
Cold civil war is the name of a chapter in William Gibson's Spook Country, it covers a lot of the claims in this episode but was written in 2007
one of my favorite things about being a trans lady is that menswear is cross-dressing now
They're always saying, "lightning doesn't strike fourteen times."

Ope, Minnesota checking in. Y’all have been one of the podcasts keeping me sane (or a reasonable amount of insane) talking about what’s happening here.
As a fellow Minnesotan lemme sneak right past ya and second this
