You got so close to “Bon Scott was a born Scot”

Funny Eleanor mentioned a Dickens's Day, and specifically Christmas. My town does do a Dickens's Day on the first Sunday of December, called "A Dickens's of a Christmas". It is a Christmas market with stall owners in Dickensian dress. It is locally known as "Dickheads Day" due to all the tourists visiting.

imagine the vibes if Québec enacts Émile Nelligan day where everyone goes really sad and horny reading poems about the oncoming darkness and cold then we get slammed on poutine and tripel witbier

Nice to get some Scots representation. My wife speaks Scots, being from Ayrshire. She'd get told off for speaking it at school, back in the 80s. My fave Scots words are "cowp" and "dreich". I also quite like the tweeness of "peely wally". If one should get the chance, visit Burns Cottage in Ayr to see where he was born.

U.S. Burns' Night, surely Mark Twain? (To give a serious answer that pretends people are literate there.)

Both Young brothers and the original lead singing Bon Scott were all Scots, as was Jimmy Barnes. Also we have creaming soda in Australia.

M

The Australian poet Henry Lawson wanted to be the Australian Burns he wrote a poem were burns' ghost anointed them as the Australian Burns. But it doesn't work because he was angry instead of horny.

We have a lot of stupid holidays here in the States. My brother says that only veterans should get Veterans Day off. My mother, who was truly a wonderful person, was a devout Catholic but very progressive. She really cared about Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. I’m a Taoist and my husband is a non-observant Jew so we really don’t give a toss about the holidays other than vacation baby! Dumb fact about me. My ancestor, John Alden, was one of the leaders of the Mayflower colony. They were all the religious zealots her majesty’s government were annoyed by. I will tell anyone who cares to listen the real story of Thanksgiving. We didn’t sit down to a nice meal with them. They kept my ancestors from starving to death and in return they slaughtered them. Thanksgiving makes Halloween look like Sunday school. But I have read Robbie Burns poetry, except I don’t give a shit about poetry so I’ve forgotten all of it. And thankfully I’ve never had Haggis. We’ve been all over the world and I’ve tried a lot of different foods. You would have to torture me to make me it sheep guts and oatmeal sewn into the poor animals stomach then boiled in its own blood. Where the fuck do people come up with this stuff?

D
Darren DM · January 27, 2026

"Where the fuck do people come up with this stuff?" Poverty. See also Black Pudding. Veggie haggis is actually very nice. Proper haggis? Not so much. Chippie haggis is palatable, mainly because it's battered and deep-fried to within an inch of carbonisation. Grant's "Premium" tinned haggis is the work of the devil.

Dicken’s Night is actually a thing! At least in a small town in North Warwickshire (Atherstone) but who knows, might catch on If you’re into strange local traditions, Atherstone also has a big fight (medieval football) on the high street every pancake day

I love how Michael takes his role as the person who knows nothing about Britain so seriously that he will even act like he has never encountered things which are incredibly commonplace in Australia. Like when he pretended he'd never seen a mince pie or didn't know about creaming soda.

Donovan Burns · January 25, 2026

My dad is named Robert Burns (the 3rd even), but he thought he was Irish and embraced the plastic paddy culture so I didn't know about the historical poet until my early 20's. Most other Burns men I meet are Roberts, but I never know how to bring up the poet.

M
Matthew Cobb-Clark · January 25, 2026

The Melbourne Demons AFL Team did borrow the melody for their team song, but it's not Auld Lang Syne. It's "You're a Grand Old Flag" a patriotic ditty from the early 1900s in the US...

No love for RLS’ ‘Kidnapped!’? Everyone thinks of ‘Treasure Island’ 1st, but ‘Kidnapped!’ has many and deeper layers? Getting pressed into naval service, unfinished grandiose half finished decrepit posh house w/much richer and fuller characters, emergent importance of lawyers? Stronger and more adult work of the quintessential protean form author & Tory being kicked off as a very British thing? Dunno if I’d reread him, but loved the flinty first words as we meet uncle Ebenezer: ‘It’s loaded!’ & wonderful layered Mr. Rankeillor eyeglasses charade similar to the Aubrey Maturin series ‘Letter of Marque’ parliamentary rotten borough seat Charade (same shape of story, but sort of bizarro inverted?) to reinstate Jack? Perhaps this is a Riley comment / like tears in the rain, but when are we going to read & review another Pat O’Brian?

Using an existing tune and writing new words for it, as Burns did for “Auld Lang Syne”, was common in the 18th and 19th centuries. Thomas Moore did the same thing with old Irish tunes, and even “The Star-Spangled Banner” gets its tune from an old drinking song
