Gear Shift in Bio feat. Victoria Scott
It's the free one!
For this week’s free episode, it’s Riley, Hussein, and November with special guest and friend of the show Victoria Scott (@mikurubaeahina) in a discussion about Tesla’s recent earnings call, its recall of its non-warhead-equipped ramming missile / bad looking truck combination, and US car manufacturers hoovering up immense amounts of personal data to be used for… insurance? Law enforcement snitching? Formal identification of when your bisexual friend has the aux cord? It’s not looking good.
LIVE SHOW ALERT See us live in London on May 29th with special guest Nish Kumar! Get tickets here: https://bigbellycomedy.club/event/trashfuture-presents-liz-truss-presents-ten-years-to-save-the-west-ft-nish-kumar/

i love when victoria is on! she mentioned a nature article about only needing four geospacial datapoints to uniquely identify an individual -- anyone got a name or a link?
I think Lexis has long had a side business of databases for skip tracers, repo men, etc. I assume what was mentioned is an outgrowth of that.
INSURANCE SURVEILLANCE MENTIONED Looks like you need to have This Machine Kills back on the show to do a deep dive
Very excited for the Kevin Hart meme to perhaps finally end

Even if we could solve self driving tomorrow, we should ban it. Wrong way. Car bad.
An someone post a link to the times article they mentioned?

wait a sec this is all just tory MAD GOD again
Oh shit, it really is the year of JG Ballard. Both the Met Gala and the call to car-based violence (not the erotic version, more the Super Cannes).
Maybe I am naive but I don’t share the feeling we’re a step from collapse (at least in the U.S.). That feels too millenarian to me. Our cops have anti-IED armored trucks and carry long guns with scopes in train stations. Many of them also believe in the project of Trumpian conservatism. And our government is run by an insane class of people who would destroy the world before they give up power. Maybe I’ll wake up one day next January and see Swan Lake on TV though, who knows! I’m sure many Soviets felt the way I do now in the late 80s
The last words Elon Musk hears before one of his robots pushes his eyeballs into his brain: "I want more life, father."
“Concerning”
Two months ago, I was finally lured into the $10 tier by a single Patrick O’Brian book, and I left a haha funny jk lil comment in the subscription box about how wouldn’t it be a laugh if they did the whole series, but seriously because the existing Aubrey/Maturin podcasts I know all suck! In particular far too long, breaking the books up in 4,5,6, pieces… Now here I am demanding that an hour on hms surprise cannot possibly suffice, the commando raid must dominate at least half an episode, and the rest of the book too good to fit into the rest. I have embodied the structural limitations and pathologies of the form, and in record time. Can wait, shipmates.

When cars are data servers, "the website crashed" will finally become literal
Maybe the whistleblowers are like the thing with Orks psychic powers. We all collectively believe they're going to die suspiciously so our minds guide them to a buttery staircase
yayy vicky episode
As a (failed) Automotive Engineer, I feel so sorry for the Engineers who work there. "He's said we're doing WHAT now?" every few months.
Regarding whistleblower 2, the alternative to he was killed is that MRSA infections are startlingly common and kill sooo many people in hospitals
Always enjoy Victoria Scott!
holy shit i was not expecting a carmageddon callout in 2024 hahahaha
Slight annoyance at the statement that the protests are mostly happening at elite universities. Not really true at all same night as the Colombia raid, more people were arrested at city college and most of the encampments are at public universities
According to Hellgate, the NYPD has been hitting the CU students with trespassing (misdemeanor) charges, but the CCNY students with burglary (felony) charges. So... like... good to see that protesting doesn't entirely remove elite impunity l guess. (Not gonna blame the CU students for this one, but it's incredibly fucked).
Let a thousand datacenters bloom, in our electric sentient vehicles. With the Mandate of Heaven (a.k.a market backing ) Elon of the Musk dinasty has said so. What could go wrong? Don't be a train barbarian or worse, a pedestrian.
The TF guys have done their fair bit of ragging on the guy who drives a battered Renault Clio, but I'll be damned if I'm giving mine up for a car that tells the government that I am crossing the border to commit a crime. Fuck that shit.
If I ever have to buy another car it's not going to be more sophisticated than a Caterham.
You’re describing Ron Swanson’s Hell
I find it very funny that if any given article/clickbait-thing online doesn't state what country its talking about, 100% of the time its because its about the US of A. America is the default country.
Yeah man, but the updates have truly f&@#$% the default country. Now you can only use it in a faith build. Respec as soon as possible.
I don’t know about anyone else but I’m always turbo cautious around a parked Tesla because I know it’s recording me. The logical leap from Idle tec as mentioned 40 minutes in, to, use the Tesla cars as a form of mobile 24/7 internet connected live ring doorbells for the police is not outside of reason. I feel like I’m a fucking q anon weirdo for even mentioning it but like seriously I wouldn’t be surprised. Hence my “slight” hesitation to light up a blunt in front of Elon musks nanny cams in the parking lot (although bathing a Tesla in weed smoke is fun) . Little shitheads park terrible anyways
Oh I didn’t listen far enough 3 minutes later lol. my bad 😅 Nice to see I was on the right track
I swear these Boeing whistleblowers are women in literature, just dropping because the plot (cough chough profits) demand it.
Elon actually delivers on the whole sentient robot thing, only for the robots to organize and form a union, and Elon attempts to challenge the 13th amendment in court under the guise of that purpose-built sentient robots don't have onus over themselves.
then picard saves the day with an awesome speech and everyone claps
That intro gave me a full body flinch reaction so thank you (?) for that invigorating moment. :)
are you kidding me I just got done listening to this and I read on Jalopnik that a guy drove a Volvo SUV into protesters in NYC
Having now read that article... Jaysus! The fact that the driver was a god damned real estate developer seems ... salient in some way. Like Victoria I'm not gonna draw lines, but there's a dot in this person being a real estate developer, and a dot in the way that the protests are impeding Columbia's expansion into Manhattanville (per the organizer interviewed on Chapo two weeks ago).
It's interesting that no one seems to have made the connection that if Elon was right about his fancy robots being sentient, then he just admitted to enslaving them.
YOU WOULDN'T DOWNLOAD A CAR
Let's be real here, if you could you would.
we're trying to stop the rising tide of fascism over here the rest of yall dont need ot try it
This is mainly for November: friend of the show Bill Ackman acquired a stake in Bremont Watch Company during 2023 and the rebrand / product revision has finally launched in 2024 to little, if any, fanfare. I wish I had Mr. Ackman's golden touch.
They look like generic AliExpress watches to me
