Forced Reevesification feat. Gareth Dennis

We're joined by top tier friend of the show Gareth Dennis (@GarethDennis) of the Rail Natter YouTube channel to discuss 'Great British Railways,' the new Labour plan to 'renationalise' (sic) the trains while leaving all of the immense problems, rent-seeking middlemen, and supply chain issues in place. But also we cautiously venture north of the border to discuss recent attempts to create Sturgeonism Without Sturgeon Or Camper Vans. It's a whole lot!

Check out Rail Natter here! https://www.youtube.com/c/GarethDennisTV

LIVE SHOW ALERT: We will be performing live with special guest Nish Kumar at Between the Bridges in London on 29th May. Get tickets and info here!

3:00 as someone with more or less the same problem, I highly sympathise November, and I've been here since I was a kid. Any convo on Scottish politics has to be prefaced with receipts. It's so tiring.

"We'll never buy any of our assets because it's cheaper to rent them forever." The thing about having a perceived monopoly on legitimate use of force within a geographic area is that, actually, you don't need to buy OR rent those assets to use them.

Surely the last in-group would have to be whatever cops, regular or special, are used to actually carry out the purges, right? Cause it'll end up with whatever suit-wearing witch-finder who's been pointing out all the people to be purged, finally pointing and saying "You shall pay for questioning my holy orders! Guards, I order you to seize your commander this instant!" And they'll look at their boss and back to the witch-finder, some extremely brief violence will ensue, and now rather than a holy order you'll have a warlord. And sure, he's brutal too, but he doesn't go around measuring people's skin color or looking in their underwear, so long as you pay his taxes and fight his battles.

I'm not sure you've talked about this yet and if you haven't you really should - the far right in Germany. Particularly relevant right now due to the AfD meeting last November, but also because there's been a spate of fascist violence against green and even Social Democratic politicians, and the CDU's rhetoric only seems to be encouraging this.

I have a ritual whenever Gareth is on, I pause the episode at the very beginning of the train section until I'm on a train. TPE York => Manc really gets me in the train mood

With all the lack of future planning or even the idea that Britain will exist in five years etc etc its hard not to come to the conclusion that the various ruling factions of the country have agreed to keep the system ticking over juuuust enough until they can sell the whole place to Pepsi and collect rent checks from California

Long term strategy: somehow one of you get on question time (probably by only showing them left on read and someone getting a PhD) and then one somehow gets on question time and the audience goes from standard gammons to revolutionaries in 20 mins and they have to quarantine the studio to stop it infecting other boomers

If there is a Gareth Davies episode on the mantelpiece in Left on Read, it should have been posted by the third Free One

When reading the British funny pages these days it's hard not to think of Maggie Thatcher's declaration that there's no such thing as a society, at least until you hear about the unlimited power in the Home Office.

it just sounds like youre describing the tory vision of the future as fully just the plot of Phill Tibbet's MAD GOD where theres just one guy left trying to blow up the universe to put it out of its misery

As an American, I am rather used to holding British Courts in contempt. I mean, it's a little hard to take the Death Penalty Hat seriously. The judge comes out in his hat, and you kind of already know what the verdict's gonna be.

Well lads, it's been a good run, but Barry saw the Judge trying to sneak the silly hat under his toupee to try and appear unbiased.
