It's Boever ft. Justin Roczniak

Justin and November from WTYP join the gang to discuss all things Boeing, and what happens to your empire when you accidentally apply your own ideology to the most important pillar of your blood soaked globe bestriding war machine? Also, we talk about the UK's ambitious plan to have flying taxis in the air by 2026, and a new Neom region that puts a certain Battersea sky pool in London to shame.

I work as an accountant. Specifically in the area of costing/ inventory in an industry that requires a certain level of quality for it to be safe to use effectively. (Sorry can't get too specific). For my day to day, I am so disconnected from the physical product that I can't even picture what most of these items look like (there's hundreds of them). All I see are item numbers on a spreadsheet with their bill of materials listed. I don't interact with the end product at all. All I see are numbers on a spreadsheet. Basically the point I'm trying to make is that "MBA finance" types shouldn't be the ones making the final decisions. We think in spreadsheets and balance sheets. Green/ black number good, red number bad. Make red number go away and green number go up by any means necessary. Quality of product means nothing to us because we don't even necessarily see what the product looks like in the end. Those who actually know and understand the product should be the ones in charge. The engineers in the case of Boeing. With finance being a support role to help "reign in" some of the costs/ budget.

I hate that I knew exactly which fuckin services Milo was on about. Leister forest east. Where the EV chargers were shut down in the 2022 heatwave and never got turned back on

I laughed extemely hard at the bit about the Trauma Team from Cyberpunk 2077 imagining the crews I work with in an Osprey and just crashing into absolutely everything. They crash the damn MedFlight helicopters enough already.

Look, it's quite simple we can't afford to fill in the potholes so it's going to have to be the death jobbie but at least you won't have to listen to someone using tik tok on the train, alright? And if you don't like it let me usher you into the assisted dying machine.

you know that anecdote where the lead Boeing test pilot pulled a butter smooth barrel roll at the first executive demonstration of the 707? that's Airplane Hooning

N
Niall · March 28, 2024

The point about flying taxis versus all other infrastructure is very well made. Living in Ireland, getting to England by any means other than aeroplane is now next to impossible and the flights are dirt cheap. But it's now the case that the most expensive part of any trip is the transport to and from the airport. Sure, you can fly to Gatwick for £9 but the train from Gatwick to anywhere else is going to cost you.

Looking more into the Joby aircraft. The FAA has only approved it for testing, it's not yet certified for actual use because we don't know things like whether it can even glide if it loses power, or how badly it's going to catch fire. It holds only 4 passengers, and is expected (by Joby) to cost 1.3 million per aircraft, which puts it exactly in line with a Bell 505 Jet Ranger X, a thing which already exists and, though slower than Joby's claimed speed, has more than double the range. Now, for what it's worth, they *have* actually made and flown the thing, and they've put out a video of it taking off behind their CEO while he talks and (assuming it's not faked) it is remarkably quiet, which explains the DoD interest

-
-Kris- · March 27, 2024

It's not going to be an air taxi, it's obviously too unsafe to have flying taxis, and far too expensive to run them as a business considering the high unit cost, high ticket cost (like 200$), and only four passenger seats. But it's easy to convince the credulous to fund a Jetsons taxi and then exclusively use it for special forces to assassinate people.

I work as a pilot flying Fairchild Metroliners to service island communities, the metroliner is on its last legs, spare parts are becoming harder to find and more expensive, the airframes are going to run out of hours within the next decade or two, and to my knowledge there isn’t a modern 19 seat aircraft that can move significant amounts of freight available to replace it. SAAB 340 is too big, king air is just as problematic parts wise.

Another thesis about Boeing being a bit shit at the moment is that acolytes of Jack Welch ascended to power. (Jimmy McNerney was a big fan.) Anyway, shout out McDonnell Douglas. First you robbed us of the Concorde, now you're robbing us of Boeing. At least we've got the Osprey stories.

-
-Kris- · March 27, 2024

If the people imagining NEOM ever want to branch out from just more malls, hotels, and restaurants, perhaps they should consider a Legoland. They definitely have the petroleum for the bricks.

I'm of the mind that it didn't have to be a Boeing executive or someone associated with a Boeing person to kill Barnett. Boeing and finance being so incestuous it could have been any heavily invested finance guy who didn't like Barnett and the current climate around the company to be motivated enough to either do it themselves or hire a capable professional. The motive is there for so many people
