More Human After All ft. Brian Merchant

"I believe AI makes us more human," said Peter Deng of OpenAI at SXSW - which is just one of the responses that AI people have when people ask bizarre questions like "what does your product do," and "hey how did you get all that training data?" Technology writer Brian Merchant joins the gang to discuss this phenomenon, Amazon's foray into building a second generation human, and, of course, the AI app that aims to replace condoms.

So these morons think skynet is a realistic threat and then put their shitty robots in every key area of society?

STIs frequently don’t show up visibly on a penis 😑 first thing I learned in sex ed

H
HAUNTER · March 29, 2024

STIs are more likely to go undetected entirely by people who have a penis. People with vulvas are more likely to have visible changes even if it’s just discharge or irritation

Pulling up the Therpenos app trying to take a picture of this guys dick and quickly realising based on his reaction that the 100% chlamydia safety rating was due to the fact that people using the Therpenos app wont ever be able to fuck anyone again after using it

FYI on the term "accuracy" : its a specific measurement in Machine Learning, and is the first semester example on how statistics works. Basically if you dick-data-base is 90% healthy dicks, then a bs AI which always says "healthy" will get a 90% accuracy rating. There are better measures than accuracy for those cases.

J
Jonas Schwammberger · March 26, 2024

Als o also FYI, the basics of bayes statistics tells you even a true 90% accurate test is useless for rare diseases. So you need to have a rampant STI epidemic for this machine to be anywhere near useful

My company recently had a convention where one of the guest speakers was another “AI evangelist” techno-optimist guy who works at OpenAI. He explained how humans kill over 40,000 people driving cars every year and we’re ok with it [citation needed] so robots driving cars can kill 39,999 and it would be fine. Then one of the boomers in the audience asked him what if AI decides to kill us all and his reply was “it won’t.”

To be fair roads would be a lot safer if 100% of motor vehicles were driven by AI. Most of the difficulty comes from trying to have AI vehicles coexist with human drivers.

Already calling bollocks. An AI booster has never been out on a date wutb a real person. They wouldn't have spent so much time trying to generate Anime waifus if that wasn't the case.

well I don't agree with your "AI art" policy, but I do agree with your "feed all artists into a juicer" policy

"I believe AI makes us more human," maybe there some truth in it, it's going to make us dumber therefore more human, like average humans, which makes sense as AI algorithms are based on regression to the mean. And mean we are. So as always everything is connected.

I listen to podcasts mostly at work doing last mile delivery and while it's clear from the examples they are hyping up automating their wherehousing operation rather than actual facility to residential delivery it's still wild that they think they can sell it.

Originally I was going to say that we should spare a thought for the poor people locked in refugee shelters forced to tag healthy and sick dick pics for 8 hours a day. But then it sounded like you said that the training data isn't legitimately sick dicks but healthy dicks with sick dick patterns photoshopped onto them. So, depending on how the ML algorithm vectorizes the images, it's possible that it associates manipulation with sickness and unmanipulated images as healthy, meaning it could give a thumbs up on every single dick pick, right?

Elsie Hupp · March 27, 2024

The AI didn’t tell us that Photoshop Kate Middleton meant she had cancer, though, so we should keep training it so it can distinguish Brazilian butt lifts from cancer.

weird thing to latch onto but since it's useful info prompted by the episode: a lot of people actually do have herpes and don't know because they don't get symptoms. some people never get an outbreak! current stats suggest ~70% of people have it, and it can be years of carrying with no outbreak for some people. so if you suddenly get an outbreak don't feel too bad, majority of people have it in some form a lot of people just have no idea. it's not the end of the world at all.

Despite not having contact sex for a decade I got what I thought was herpes in my inner thigh, but no, it was herpes more devious cousin: shingles. Didn't help that they're treated with the same meds.
