Who Runs Gamertown? ft. Lin Codega
Riley, November, and Hussein provide an update on the Glasgow Wonka situation - which is that Billy Coull officially has a tummy ache because everyone in the world is mad at him just for creating the only good AI generated art ever. Then, we look at the re-emergence of The Chicken Suits in UK politics, and what it means for our realm of nothing but floating signifiers. Finally, we are joined by games journalist Lin Codgea to discuss Saudi Arabia's plan to become the world capital of e-sports and games development, while remaining pretty much officially hostile to LGBT people.

Part of the problem is the Saudis and other gulf states *do* send people abroad to learn stuff, and then those people *stay* abroad as much as possible. As Hussein mentioned, they can't seem to retain anyone because, would you believe, everyone wants to move to a country where you can *openly* drink and fuck and generally have fun with your riches
Will women be allowed to play driving games in the new city? I'll show myself out
Game developer in a tough interview: “I have to go return some videotapes”
my assumption when I hear the HR professionals asking for government 'guidence' on chat bot generated job applications is they are asking if it's grounds for docking someones unemployment.
As a busy faggot about to move to Miami, Nova citing Florida as a homophobic jurisdiction gave me a lovely reminder of the sort of bullshit I'm likely in for
As a trans woman living in Florida I can confirm it is not good here!
To be fair, scamming parents and children and exploiting workers IS the authentic Willy Wonka experience. Also, fun fact, the previous “e-Sports olympics” was a Starcraft 2 tournament awkwardly tacked on to the Winter Games in Korea, which was won by a trans woman.
Holy shit, the ceiling fell in the critical care unit in the hospital I work in
Shinji get in the chicken suit
For reference, Richard Lewis (reporter) and the 4 horse men podcast do really good coverage of the Saudi take over of esports.
2029 Boris Johnson is back as the Tory candidate. lets fucking go. lets get brexit done
Hey, you can't compare furries to British politicians. Furries fund the arts.
As the old meme shows : Art is always controlled by people with large sums of money: Monarchs Eccentric millionares Suspiciously wealthy furries
i remember when they hosted the GAMERS8 fighting game tournament with a 6 digit prize in Saudi Arabia, and invited UMISHO, a trans woman who is one of the best at guilty gear strive. she refused, essentially saying "you know what they do to folks like me there right?"
a lot of FGC commentators went mainly because they got an actual paycheck, the pay for most fighting game commentators basically amounts to a subsidized holiday
Are you guys forgetting that Glasgow Wonka was a confirmed groomer who started dating a 16 year old student of his when he was 22? Kinda makes the whole debacle seem like karmic retribution tbh https://x.com/emmatolkin/status/1763544982953353537?s=46
Balatro mentioned!!
Twice!!
I actually got a Voight-Kampff test during an interview once. (Kinda. It was my own fault. The interviewer was a bit late and I'd folded a little origami dragon while I was waiting. First question was then something about a turtle).
Will someone be willing to make a (CW)TB » TB(SWT) joke about Penny Arcade's Tycho? Have I made the joke by asking? Stay tuned for the Kevin Hart's Lift episode to find out.
The only thing that will save Britain from Starmer’s inevitable failure is that it is so cursed at this point that it can’t even muster a plausible right wing demagogue.
You forgot to link to Lin Codgeas website
The real blended reality experience is when MBS puts you in an actual giant blender for having pink hair and pronouns in public
Saudi Arabia heard "Gamers aren't oppressed but they should be" and drew a really weird conclusion from it
Penny Arcade is actually one of the most inclusive spaces in gaming. They were one of the first to ban "booth babes" and have constantly worked to improve based on inputs from the community. Honestly just a stellar group of people
It's WILD that the realization of AI cover letters has prompted people who interact with those things to pretend they want anything approaching personality. I was unemployed for the first half of 2023 and prepared by slightly updating the same five sentence rephrased example piece from an answer bank that I've been using since my first application in 2015, switched out a few word choices that felt awkward looking back at it then. Literally the only thing it conveyed that wasn't just repetition of facts in my resume was the most expected clichés "I love to learn" and "I have social skills". The amount of recruiters that took time to praise me for my "extraordinarily well written cover letter" was stunning. Especially ones that'd later pass me up on a junior dev position for having an interdisciplinary B.A. instead of a pure software M.Sc. and not having at least three years experience with .NET backend, or just neglect to call back at all after the first interview. What a fucking joke.
Do you want to do gaming? Go to the gaming district! Do you want to learn to moonwalk? Go to the Saudi embassy in Turkey!
Excited to see the Saudi edition of "Papers, Please!"
Keir Starmer and Donald Trump doing a summit would mean that Milo has been touching the lathe.
When I left cirque over them bringing shoes to Saudi as part of vision 2030 it was a year after we cancelled our North Carolina shows over that bathroom bill
"If the transsexual is not happy, she will leave" - me in a manic phase, speaking in the third person as I complain to HR.
I was wondering why the Saudi Airlines Lost Luggage Department was located in the Pine Barrens...
This cover letter thing reminds me of the time when people were freaking out that GPT-3 and -4 could score really well on the SAT and ACT writing tests. A lot of those people seem to have forgotten that there is literally no scoring those writing samples for accuracy, they just care that you've strung an argument together that is essentially logical on the surface. The one thing that the AI people did properly observe is that there are a lot of pieces of writing that we ask people for, even at a young age, ARE robotic in nature.
Yes they're standardized college entry exams (privately run)
As a gamedev oh man, our industry is going THROUGH IT right now 😵💫
Get into the chicken suit Shiinji.
I'm so clucked up
When the Lift episode comes out it's going to be the most momentous event in the history of the feed. There should be a premier, a release livestream, everyone can get dressed up, we can have a countdown to Nate publishing it, bring in all the celebrity friends, and then it all turns into a mass occult ritual
yo you spelled Lin's last name different in the description from the title, which is it?
According to their Twitter, it's Lin Codega
Ahem: Chicken Suit for the Soul
