The Flabbergastingly Stupefying Confabulations of Victor Marx (E385)

Cajun karate black belt, ex-marine, gun disarm master, demon hunter, pedophile hunter, and Colorado gubernatorial candidate, Victor Marx (no relation), has a storied past that’s details have evolved with him over the years leading to, at times, more questions than answers. Was he a state champion trumpet player? Did he kill a man at 7 years old? And just how many demons has he exorcised?

Today Travis breaks down Marx’s claims and as the stories get stranger, Julian and Jake also slowly break down until they grind to a halt on the side of the interstate. Later we are joined by the investigations editor for The American Prospect and senior fellow at the American Economic Liberties Project, Maureen Tkacik. Her June investigation, “Onward Christian Soldier,” examines Marx’s purported rescue work, the ministry and political networks surrounding him, and the making of his “hardcore pastor” persona.

I love this show. Long time fan. Can we get even a 10% decrease in “Jake Schtick”? I just think some times him trying to shoehorn a joke into a serious place is just so unwelcome.

Free Burma Rangers sounds like Rambo 4

M
Mikey H · August 20, 2026

Rambo 4 was actually heavily based on the reporting work that FBR does, but obviously a highly Rambo-ized take. FBR does very good work helping some important causes near and dear to me as a leftist, but they do swim amidst an absolute sea of these types of grifters. They don't tend to be ones to stick around FBR long, though.

Tkacik referencing the Epstein Files as reasoning for the Marx childhood murder story having plausibility raises my hackles after seeing so many people online now claiming Epstein was eating babies etc because "its in the files". That's more on me being extremely freaked out by widespread Epstein misinfo rn

Krystal Bitch · August 17, 2026

I find it interesting how this guy seems closer to his insane father figures than with his mom. He partied with the step dad that supposedly forced him to kill a man and forgave and was mentored by his father who supposedly raped his mom at gunpoint but there seems to be no mention of his mom in his adult life. Is she dead? Does she agree with his childhood stories??

When they asked the guy how many people he killed. He very clearly wasnt hemming and hawing like he didnt want to admit awful things he knows he has done. He was trying to figure out how to sound as badass as possible. And then he felt like an idiot when the reporter kinda pushed a little instead of fawning over his mysterious bs.

Jake! Word of advice from someone who did vocal training for years, when doing a falsetto try to yawn halfway before singing. that space where you've started a yawn but haven't actually made noise yet is the perfect space for singing, and I think that's what you need to put your beautiful falsetto over the edge

J

I saw the beach boys live like three times. Jake nailed it.

N
Nadia · August 15, 2026

Other issues aside, trauma affects memory and the retelling of events. So adding or taking away details from a story actually shouldn’t impact credibility. That’s copaganda. It’s probably fair to say that some level of child abuse did happen.

Ben Schwabe · August 14, 2026

I had a coworker from the Deep South who explained to me that after her grandfather dies her aunt spent several hours alone with his corpse before calling the police and never explained what she did in that time. Their preacher said not to ask about it because the aunt was "cloaked in the Lord's forgiveness". My coworker made a gesture like putting on a cloak as she did that. Evidently this made the aunt immune to reorecussions for whatever she did. I assume she split the loot with the preacher. Anyway my point is Pentacostal preachers are all like level five clerics, but that mom casting a door ward was really impressive. She must have done some levels of cleric before switching to mom.

I can't believe Marx turned down a position as a karate instructor just to grind from the rap.

n
nownotmyrealname · August 14, 2026

There’s something so funny to me about everyone agreeing that this guy sucks shit, but they all also have to mention that the double disarm *is* cool. Maureen Tkacik commenting on it unprompted after the main hosts agreed earlier was hilarious.

That’s exactly who he reminded me of

J
James Shevelin · August 14, 2026

Heavenly falsetto @jake

I
Isaac Suárez · August 14, 2026

Victor Marx reminds me of Praying Medic (with a bit of Mike Warnke mixed in). Praying Medic instructed people “contesting cases” in the “court of heaven” to claim protection under the “blood of Jesus.” This invocation, available in a book Praying Medic sold to “fund his ministry,” took the place of any kind of legal argument or judicial procedure (which is quite convenient if you’re a true believing Evangelical Christian, apparently.) Also, for what it’s worth, the “Free Myanmar Rangers” likely organize support to the opposition in Myanmar (a range of rebel groups fighting the military junta on behalf of a range of national minorities- mostly folks who reside in the highlands of the national interior.) The largest of these groups tend to espouse Christian identity- since many of the the highlanders were converted to Christianity by British missionaries when it was a colony. The ruling military junta is Bamar chauvinist (the ethnolinguistic identity of the majority of the coastal, lowland and urban areas). The junta also uses Buddhist identity to organize support (including Buddhist chauvinists who are deeply Islamophobic.) I can see evangelical Christians in the US coding the civil war as a “war against Christians.” The reality is much more complicated.

N
Noah Miller · August 14, 2026

Genuinely great job for giving a pretty good rundown of one of the longest and most insane civil wars in history that I have a strange fascination with and really didn’t expect to see referenced here

T

H
