Its important to note that Kirk platformed alot of Christian evangelical anti-mormon rhetoric. Many people believe that the fatal attack on a mormon meeting house a few days after was partly motivated by the Kirk shooting. I think even though they're right wing the attitudes of the local authorities are probably pretty ambivalent.
