Meet The AI Influencers Grifting Your Parents feat. Ej Dickson (Premium E345)

Are those “small business owners” selling trinkets on Tik Tok actually real? Are those ripped gay hunks on Twitter just AI? Do people even care about the distinction between “fake” and “real” in the content they see online?

In this episode we dive into the various ways people are deploying AI entities on social media: from the scammy, to the benign, to the sadistic and abusive. Travis unpacks the recent controversy over an Australian influencer who was caught using AI to promote her dubious charity as well the strange trend of videos of fake belt buckle makers.

Later the boys are joined by Ej Dickson, senior culture writer at WIRED and author of One Bad Mother: In Praise of Psycho Housewives, Stage Parents, Momfluencers, and Other Women We Love to Hate. Dickson shares the perspective she’s gained on reporting on influencer culture, parasocial relationships, and AI manipulation.

Along the way the crew ponders whether humanity will actually have to lose a war to AI in order to get plugged into an illusory Matrix-like world or if people will walk into it willingly so long as they can interact with their favorite synthetic influencers.

As someone who makes hand crafted art, those adds piss me off so much because they are stealing images of my work for these fake adds and the knock off product. As an artist I have to post online to sell but if I post online my images are stolen and replicated poorly. We can't win

This tangentially reminds me of some recent insights into AIPAC astroturfing the current dem primaries by paying “content creators” to pretend that they live in swing state and support the moderate-centrist candidate over progressives. Could be an interesting episode!

I keep getting the teen or disabled child being bullied and then selling crochet shit ads. I think they are actually all for temu, tho they may have come and gone now. Think the birthday cake slop photos for the vibe. I got got by a crocodile onto of a crocodile floatie photo recently, only realised as the younger guy at work said it was ai after like glancing at it. Felt so boomer.

As someone in Northern Minnesota, who spent one week in 100+ temps that my area is absolutely not prepared for, followed by a week of smoke clouding out the sun and not being able to breathe outside, yes AI is unequivocally bad. If just for the ever accelerating environmental impact. Beyond that, the reason gaming tech (as well as almost all consumer tech) sucks and will continue to get worse is because of AI. Better offline had a recent episode that explains how AI is making consumer tech both worse and more expensive.

While the actual reason for using the real pictures is almost certainly what is described here, I think it's also a shortcut to constrain and standardize the output. The more you feed into these big predictive models the more consistent their predictions (I.e., their output) will be

This reminded me of the truest ugliest ai printed apron my mom (a Facebook boomer) sent me that I almost threw away, but forever reason didn’t. She passed in may 2026 and now crying. Also realizing this ugly apron will be passed down to any future children I have.

AI had managed to accomplish 1 single thing that I never thought I would live to see. They managed to make nintendo, games workshop, and metallica's IP protectionist policies look like the good guy. I would have included disney in that list, but disney managed to abandon even that simple high ground. Whata world we live in.

E
Elaine Åhlfeldt · July 20, 2026

I get a little bit worried sometimes in episodes where AI comes up and Jake spins into "are we approaching Skynet" spitballing. The answer to that question is unambiguously no, there's no rational argument for it being a possible outcome of this type of machine learning technology. But the industry and its' boosters are putting a lot of money into propaganda to reinforce the notion that it's not a settled question, so on a human level I can't really blame anyone just keeping up with the news for buying into that to some extent. At the same time correcting the record on disinformation is your bread and butter as a podcast, so maybe that would be a worthwhile topic to cover with an expert on the call? Someone like Cal Newport, or Ed Zitron for that matter if you want to have to censor out more actionable threats than just the ones Julian contributes.

EJ's comment about paying a premium for human content in the future is something I've been saying for a few years now. Ever since a guy tried to get me to listen to the "cool music" he "made" with AI, I realized that the performing arts are going to go the way of many physical art traditions. Like in woodworking, centuries ago you would have to save up and buy furniture or make it yourself out of real wood and then they would be keepsakes for generations, whereas now, you either buy the shitty particle board Ikea crap, or pay a huge premium for a full hardwood set of furniture because the labor alone is so specialized and uncommon now that we're paying a premium for the human element.

The UK has developed far right AI influencers for the terminally brain dead. Danny Bones is a rapper who luvs his ethnic cleansing and Amelia is a purple-haired girl of unclear age who orders "beer" in the pub. I would really liketo hear Annie talk about this phenomenon when she returns (congratulations, Annie!) https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2026-03-12/danny-bones-meet-the-ai-rapper-funded-by-a-far-right-party

AI search is not good, Jake! Since google went full AI I have had multiple instances of the AI misinterpreting a query, giving me pages of incorrect results and then subsequent attempts to refine my search term being hampered by google remembering every previous search as what I actually wanted. Actual search is dead.

B
Ben Schwabe · July 20, 2026

It's incredible how backwards the quality of google search has gone. A few years ago it was already going to hell thanks to monetization, now AI is beshitting everything.

Great ep as usual. Made me think of all the hilarious videos I’ve gotten on TikTok recently of this guy debunking so called “burp rappers”. Which is AI rap songs with burp-y lyrics, deep bass/Drum and Bass type beats set over country acoustic guitars. Truly awful shit lolll. And of course the Facebook boomers and moms on TikTok lap it up regularly.

True story, about 20 years ago (holy shit, that can’t be right) I was at a party and asked for a bottle opener. This guy starts unbuckling his belt, and I was like “What the fuck,” but he laughed and said “No no, watch!” He pulled the buckle out, and it was a knife and bottle opener, which he used to open my beer. I must have made a hilarious face because everyone got a kick out of it. The Bowen Belt Knife. Rips to a real one.

it's not about lazy, it's about the insane demands of capitalism to produce as much as possible regardless of quality. when we can't meet those demands, we start to use Ai to keep up with expectations. but then that amount of production is the new expectation which creates dependency, burnout, and shitty products. at some point the skills and knowledge required by specialized jobs is completely useless.
