The Cultural Marxism Conspiracy feat. A.J.A. Woods (E378)

Travis and Annie are joined by intellectual historian A.J.A. Woods to discuss their new book The Cultural Marxism Conspiracy: Why the Right Blames the Frankfurt School for the Decline of the West. Woods traces how a group of German critical theorists associated with the Frankfurt School were transformed in the right-wing imagination into the secret architects of everything reactionaries hate about modern life, including feminism, multiculturalism, LGBTQ rights, “political correctness,” Critical Race Theory, and “wokeness.”

A.J. documents how paranoia about the Frankfurt School travelled from Lyndon LaRouche’s conspiracist ecosystem, through the Free Congress Foundation and the 1990s panic over political correctness, into the Tea Party, Gamergate, anti-woke politics, and contemporary right-wing movements in the US, UK, and Brazil.

In the audio clip you play at 1:33:15, the news caster say “what possesses the greater risk to society…” and I think it’s very funny that that made the final edit

IMO the worst part about this anti- Frankfurt anti-woke agenda, is its censored valid critiques the left has of the limitations of identity politics for revolutionary change in this country or the world. Even institutions taking in DEI initiatives cant go beyond trying to fix all the interpersonal issues amongst various groups, but are blind to ways structural biases in the institutions are happening. For example in schools there's a hyper focus on anti-blackness in how it manifests amongst students leading to calls of doing "anti- N word" trainings and it leads simply to teachers writing more referrals for students of color using the word. MEANWHILE there's not any energy to look at why for example less than 1% of educators in the district are African American? Or why teachers have beliefs about African American students that impact the expectations. So now if you critique this anti- N word initiative, will meaning liberals will see you as some sort of secret conservative or anti-woke person. It just becomes almost like no critique is possible.

Thank you for this one Travis! I grew up in Oceanside. Maybe we shared a wave or ate a bucket of McDonald’s fries under the pier along side each other. Cheers dude

This was a really tough listen due to one guest’s severe AQI?

What they've done in Oceanside is for the best in regard to tourism and tax revenue, but not for the locals, not in my opinion.

This was a really interesting episode. It made a few things really clear for me that I hadn't really understood before. I'm definitely getting their book.

I'd never really thought about it, but looking at the GamerGate grievances about e.g. Lara's bosom within a Cultural Marxist framework uses those ostensibly petty worries to give envious right-wingers permission to take up the woke idea of micro-agressions for themselves.

any thoughts on Gabriel Rockhill's "Who paid the pied (sic?) piper?"

Off topic, but I’m curious how you guys feel about the world finally catching up on Tulsi Gabbard. I’m cynical about certain media outlets claiming ignorance. Great episode btw.

These are my favorite type of QAA episodes. I don't mean missing Julian and jake, but ones that are more focused on the topic, a little more serious and provide real information and insight from people educated on the subject!

Same. Understanding the roots of the problem seems like a way to a solution.

I love that you're exploring the Lyndon LaRouche phenomenon.

Trueanon did a great biographical series on him and the craziness his movement has caused. LaRouche is a fascinating individual and his modern acolytes are equally as pedantic but far more annoying.
