Our Life: Cove Wedding Tradition Discussion (CLOSED!)
Hello!
The Cove Wedding DLC is coming right along, but before it gets further along I wanted to gauge our players on the kinds of traditions they'd like to see as options in the ceremony/reception. In the DLC you'll be able to pick if you, for example, want to walk down the aisle or not, do the cake smashing thing or not, have parent/child dances (with your own parents and/or your spouse's parents), and such.
If there's something you'd want to see, go ahead and leave it in the comments. If someone else has already posted it before, you can still mention it to add to its support. This won't be a complete popularity contest poll, but it is good to know things people would be excited to have. And while we won't be able to include everything players can think of, we will do what we can to have decent variety/flexibility!
Thank you for all of the comments everyone :D. We've gone ahead and began scripting the traditions section of the Wedding DLC.

In my Puerto Rican family has a tradition where people pin money on the outfits of those who are getting wed to have a dance with them, a way of congratulating them and being be to see them off to their spouse
idk like a blanket ceremony?? it's pan-Native American tradition (its not in all tribes, obviously; but it is in A Lot) it's where you get a blanket (usually a Pendleton or some other "Navajo"-styled/Dine wool blanket) draped over your and your spouse's shoulders. its meant to demonstrate a home and it being unbreakable, because you cant split a blanket in half (aka warding off a potential divorce, i guess?). its also meant to illustrate warmth and stability and mutual protection. you can find out mkre about its symbolism online, usually. anyway, you're supposed to keep it after in your home, usually on your bed (like folded up at the foot, if you dont use it to sleep with), but thats not mandatory. there is a slight worry with people who are allergic to wool, like my sister-in-law, but she knew how important this tradition was to my brother's heritage and our side of the family, so she wanted to do it in spite of my brother's worries about her health, so my brother held the blanket over her shoulders in a way to make sure none of it touched her skin (which i argue highlights the intended protective message of the blanket further); which i mention in case wool would impact Cove's skin sensitivity. it's featured for a very short portion of the ceremony, which helped. and thats in addition to stuff with being smudged with sage and maybe eating frybread (ive seen a couple of indigenous weddings jokingky tear the frybread in half to illustrate Sharing Food between the spouse, since frybread is often featured at a lot of ceremonies/get-togethers anyway. but frybread, because of its history as a survival food, while also pan-Native American, is controversial. so id get it if that wasnt included) and all that (more than what ive mentioned is usually tribal-specific) there is a kinda similar thing that happens at some Jewish weddings, where it's a scarf instead of a blanket (but the breaking of glass is obviously more famous for Jewish weddings). i dont knkw the history of that, but i immediately perked up with recognition when i saw the scarf get put around both parties' shoulders at a wedding for people i didnt know (i was brought along as a plus one for a date), so i was too shy to ask lmao just a couple of ideas, under the assumption youre making moves to be inclusive about various types of cultural wedding traditions. but thats a LOT to ask and kind of impossible to be fully inclusive of since theres So Many Cultures, i know. but i thought this might be something easier to code? idk. whatever you guys think is best ♡
Don't know if it's been said but the farewell tunnell
idk if something mentioned it but perhaps the good ol "something old, something new, something blue, and something borrowed" thing
I love this tradition! Friends and family usually help by gifting things, there could be so many variations of who could gift what!
other people have mentioned it, but "one last dance" would be a perfect callback to soiree! (or an opportunity for people to experience it if they don't have that moment) and i'm pretty sure it'd be a lot to include specifically cultural traditions, but i think a tea ceremony would be great :')
crosscup drinking!!!! garter shenanigans...and maybe some more diverse traditions from a range of diff cultures? (obviously within the constraints of the game lmao)
(by crosscup drinking i mean the linking arms and drinking from the other person's glass lmao)
Oh how could I forget! If someone hasn’t suggested it already there absolutely has to be an option to jump the broom!
someone mentioned something similar (i think a “one more dance before it’s over” sort of thing) and i agree i absolutely love that idea and the more modern tradition of a last dance between the couple after everyone has left it’s just them
Ok so I thought of another thing. I know a lot of weddings tend to have specific seating arrangements and stuff, but personally I would be weirded out if that was part of it. If it is specifically mentioned or something, I'd love to have the option to have no assigned seating instead. I've never been to a wedding with assigned seating personally, but I know for my own I'd rather people roam around and sit where they want
Not really a wedding tradition but more of a Cove/MC tradition. I'd like to have another "one more dance before it's over" moment
Not sure if you guys would be willing to put any Muslim wedding traditions. 😔 But I'm fine with the suggestions others are saying.
I don't know if anyone else knows about this, but there's an old wedding tradition of "something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue". These were things given to the bride to wear for good luck during the wedding. Of course we can mix it up and Cove and the MC can both do it, but I think it'd be a cute add on for the wedding. You guys should look it up.
If it's too long to read just ignore it, I know I wrote a lot but I had a lot to say however no one is forcing you to read it so you can ignore it if not interested, also spare me the "you wrote too much" thing, I'm annoyed by that because people read it and then complain about the length as if I forced them to read it all. I read the answer of someone else to this, and I don't exactly know how a marriage work (I usually knew that when the dance part happen the first to dance are the married couple then the others can join) but it would be really interesting the idea they suggested of Cove dancing with our moms and MC dancing with Cove dad. Honestly I would love to dance with Cliff because I really like his character and while we had interactions with him and occasionally hugged him I would like a bit more of MC and Cliff platonic/familiar relationship because I think it's great see how they get along and it's really sweet, not having a dad in real life (because of a divorce) made me really attached to Cliff because he really tried his best as a parent and I guess that mixed with the not having a father while I grew up made me more attached to Cliff, but even if it wasn't for that I think it would be really sweet to dance with him (before that dancing with your parents like this person said, then Cliff and finally the spouse) even because I think it would be nice having a bit of MC and Cliff moments (obviously platonic) since you can come up with calling him dad to a certain point. Another one is the idea of throwing the bouquet, honestly it's a wedding it's impossible for that not to happen. The idea of Terry and Miranda or Derek and Lee catch it is really funny and interesting, I wouldn't suggest to throw it to Baxter because he's the only one without a "partner" and it would be sad, especially if MC and Baxter were a couple then break up. What I think would be really funny to see is throwing the bouquet, Shiloh and Jeremy are standing close to each other and one of them take it. It would be funny to tease them about it or maybe Shiloh lowkey tease Jeremy along with the MC and make Jeremy flustered, it would be a cute interaction honestly since this "friends" trio is really interesting, I feel like MC, Shiloh and Jeremy would be a funny trio depending on your choices and personality. Since I'm someone who tease people without any harm I would enjoy to tease Jeremy about the bouquet and I feel like Shiloh would totally tease him while pretending to be innocent. Also it would be sweet if the moms too had a chance of catching the bouquet, maybe depending on how much interaction you have with someone the bouquet will end up in the hands of the people you interacted the most or maybe like in the donkey game depending on where you chose to throw it (like, left, right, middle etc.) someone different will catch it everytime between friends or family. That's pretty much it, I loved the idea of that person (Alejandra I think) and I wanted to suggest/add some things about that, anyway their idea was really really great, funny and cute! It would be nice to see that (or some of the things I mentioned) happen in the game. Last thing, not really something that must be done, but it would be nice to have the chance to chose who brings you at the altar, of course at the most one or two people can bring you and I would feel like the moms and Lizzie or Lee should be the one to have a chance (either the moms together or just Lizzie or Lee) however it would be cute if you could chose a friend or maybe Cliff or Kyra even if I still would go for my family, however I would like to see the MC interact more with their friends or Cliff and Kyra. Honestly it would be interesting to see Jeremy or Shiloh have the chance to bring you to the altar however there's no need to answer to that, I know it's literally impossible because even if somewhat friends we aren't that close and they would never do that, also it feels strange to chose them over close friends or family since they aren't that close, the MC can chose to be friends with them but they don't exactly reciprocate but kinda do, however they are not close enough to do something like that, however imagine how adorable it would be if Jeremy accompanies you to the altar, it would be one of the cutest thing ever. Still I'm very well aware that the chance of this happening are really low/impossible and even if it would happen, it would be strange because we aren't actually that close and it would kinda be unfair to the people who were really close to us.
Absolutely the parent/child dances even if they get a bit mixed up. I don't know if it's just a local tradition or a culture thing but most weddings I've gone to have the dance start with your parents then the inlaws cut in then the couple meeting in the middle of the dance floor for their dance. It is done that way to show that they belong to both families now which ties in nicely to Liz teasing about being one family. I could see Cliff sliding in a joke about the 20 dollars during the dance. We could also worry about just what our moms are saying to Cove you know Pamela would take the time to tease him and all we would see was him getting red. I really want the bouquet and garter throw just to have Miranda and Terry being the ones to catch them or Lee and Derek. Just some combination of our friends catching them so we can tease them about when they are going to set the date for their wedding.
I don't know who the flower girl or ring bearer are going to be, and I don't know if this is a thing everyone does or not, but at the weddings I go to it's traditional for the flower girl and ring bearer to dance together after the bride and groom, or if they're related to the bride and groom they sometimes dance at the same time as the bride and groom. It's not a big thing but I think it'd be a really cute thing to add as an option especially if they were someone's kids.
So, I have a feeling I'm alone in this, and I know that the cake flavors have already been decided upon, but I figured I'd still ask. Is there a possibility of the wedding cake being almond? Before the screenshot was released I had no idea that people had anything BESIDES almond cake as wedding cakes. I believe it's more a tradition in my specific state. I'd also love for there to be a groom cake! All the weddings I've gone to typically have a separate cake that the groom picks out, so guests have 2 options. I googled it and apparently it's most popular in the Southeastern USA
I would love if we could pick a best man / best woman / best person at the wedding, and have them give a little speech about our relationship! I'd LOVE the choice to see Shiloh, Lee, Miranda, Terry, Jeremy, or Derek to speak at our wedding!! (Especially Shiloh and Lee!)
Option to run off with the wedding planner? Lol. But for real, an option to do vows privately would be cute
Yeah, the option to go fully private is something I'd be all for, but I don't see it being very popular among players. I'm a big advocate of eloping and telling others once the dust has settled *in general*, but I don't think that's what most players want from the wedding DLC.
I definitely want to have Cove be the one freaking out/getting cold feet, though giving the mC the option is also good. Definitely removing the garter, just because we know Cove would be a blushing mess! Also, please add the option either for the MC to be pregnant (born female) or have one or more adopted kids present.
YES PLEASE!!! Please let us have the option to be pregnant or be adopted kids. At least a serious moment where MC and Cove are talking about having babies, adopting, fur babies, or just themselves.
I can't help but look for things from my own marriage, which I know won't all be options here. One thing I'd want is the option of nobody changing surnames at all. Another thing I'd want is the option of a ceremony that had nobody at all officiating it -- there's self-marriage. The decision about live music or DJ, and kind of music, is a big one for me. My dad was a professional musician who played weddings, my sister-in-law's wedding involved a really good live Jazz act... but I've also been to weddings that were just DJed. (My own had no music at all since we basically eloped.) I want the option of a chocolate fountain at the desert table. I want to tempt Cove to stick his finger into it. I want to be able to have input into seating arrangements. If I can manage it, Baxter and Lee *will* be seated at the same table. I'm sure I'll think of other things (and I'm sure they won't all be accepted, I understand that).
Def agree with DJ vs a band. I'd love to choose like a jazz band or something, despite it not really affecting the game much
Sand ceremonies have been super popular lately and not sure if that would be too difficult to get in there, but I think it is a good option or would definitely be really interesting. Also, a guest book signing or photo booth for the whacky friends.
I think I will like almost anything but I want to know cove's opinion on it. so like if there is something he doesn't like he might agree to do it for the Mc but he will state that its not exactly his preference or something as its his day as well.
Or if we find out that Cove wants to do something special and we get to choose to do that and see his reaction.
At my aunt's wedding, they had everyone who showed up take a polaroid picture and sign a guest book, and it was later turned into a collage. It would be really cool to see that in game, but I also understand if it doesn't.
i would love a collage of the characters posing with each other !
Hand fasting would be a nice touch
Want to also second (or third?) the garter toss. It would tease the heck out of Cove, and I'm here for it. An acknowledgement of nerves would also be great!
This would be hilarious!
In my opinion, the option to NOT have anything religious with the wedding. As a atheist, that's something that's actually pretty important to me. And hey, if you do something that mocks the 20 dollar bill, I feel like that would actually be hilarious.
I 1000% agree with this!
I have a few ideas! •MC playing an instrument or singing for Cove during the ceremony if it’s established they are into music / just doing a surprise wedding thing based on their skills/hobbies or something they know Cove will love •The option of MC choosing details of their vows if the players wants something less-traditional before the wedding and seeing it put all together the day of •MC picks whether they wear a suit or dress no matter gender identity •Moment alone after ceremony for Cove/MC •Flower girl/boy? I’m not sure who but it’s so cute, even if it’s just a friend their age •Involve pets in ceremony if MC/Cove have them •Wedding speech’s from important people at reception (Moms, Cove’s Parents, Maid of Honor, etc) •Option of using one of Moms dresses if MC wears a dress I think that’s it for now! Sorry it’s so long 😅
Agree!!!
Personally I would love an option to not walk down the aisle at all - the roots of this tradition are not so appealing, just as imperative that one of the spouses must take the other's surname - flexibility in this would be superb. Wedding Shoes Game is ( mostly) always fun - it's a fun way to reflect on time spent together,(could be a lot of teasing ) and it's engaging with the audience while giving them insight into the couple's little moments.
It would be super sweet if Cove's Das walked us down the aisle :')
It be so sweet to have Cliff walk us down the aisle.
A unity candle or sand pouring would be great. Especially for Liz to continue her ribbing about how the Lasts and the Holdens have always been one family.
I love the jumping the broom tradition ❤ also walking down the aisle, tossing the bouquet, parent/in law dances
I would love to see jumping the broom. As a pagan, it's really important to have jumping the broom.
Besides all the basics (walking down the aisle, first dance, etc.) I would really like an option to have a handfasting wedding ceremony. Also, having the option to be escorted down the aisle by one or both of our parents would be nice too.
Handfasting would be a nice touch, especially if we want to imagine our MCs as coming from a Celtic background before they were adopted and wanting to connect with that part of their heritage.
Walking down the isle as the mc ( or a cove choice ) saying vows to each other, parent dances and the first couple dance, cake smashing, bouquet tossing, and maybe the throwing or the Garter?
I would love if Cove says something like "We can't see each other before the wedding" (on the day of the wedding Throw the bouquet ofc Dance ofc Something blue, something borrowed, something new, something old as well! I can imagine moms giving MC something they used on their wedding :')
This was a tradition in my family and it would be so cute to see~
When you say if we want to walk down the aisle does that also give the option of Cove walking down the aisle as well? Cause I'd think that'd be great! Only if he would want to of course ❤ Gotta love how yall give so many options to traditions at the wedding!
Throwing the bouquet (with maybe a randomized/'you pick who' in terms of who catches it; it'd be funny if somehow Cliff caught it without even trying to) and the bride and/or groom preparing some sort of choreographed dance or a game at the reception/afterparty.
I would love to see Cliff catch the bouquet withouy trying.
This one would go alongside walking down the aisle, but being given away by someone (i.e. moms, Liz, etc.). Cutting the cake together, I'm not sure if this is a "tradition," but I've seen it at some weddings. Lastly, the whole "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue" thing. It'd probably be like choosing to wear an anklet with the keychain Cove bought you on it (old), a necklace (new), something from Liz (borrowed), and a pair of earrings (something blue).
Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue would be an amazing for these two! So much history between them, and so many blue ocean items ;)
I don't know why but I always likes the "Can't see each other for three days before the wedding or it's bad luck." I find it to be more meaningful for when you see your lover again after being separated that felt like forever. (But it wasn't😋)
The parents/parents-in-law dance would be lovely. The carrying over the threshold seems neat, and would kind of go with the recurring piggyback events, if the player chose those haha.
I don't know how writeable the concept would be but I'm Nigerian and typically in Nigerian weddings during the bride and grooms' (or whoever's) first dance, it's customary for guests to spray the newly married couple with money as like a wish of wealth and prosperity (the money would following be packed by the bridal train and be used by the couple in newly married life to help with settling in) but it's such a fun part of the wedding. Growing up and going to weddings it was always my favorite part to ask my parents for money and join the crowd to throw it on the bride and groom while they dance and join them on the dance floor. OMG it would also be so fun if like when Cliff comes up to spray money he's jokingly like "never ask me for money again, lol" hahaha
OMG, a money dance would be fabulous!
Maybe a "unity ritual/ceremony" sort of thing? Some people do a unity candle, sand pouring, paintings, or plant a tree, etc...me and my husband did handfasting while we did our vows and it was lovely. We kept the pretty cord we used as a memento and have it draped over our wedding picture so I may be biased about that one 🥰.
The newly wed having a special dance or there is a thing where one of the family members of the bride or groom take one of the newly Weds shoes and they have to guess who has it . It's a fun little mini game that we play at weddings in Mexico
Definitely the walk and parent/child dances.
Definitely walk down the aisle
maybe the thing where you link arms and drink from each other’s wine glasses? i feel like it would be easy to tease cove that way lol
I would love that, it would be really cute.
I'm not sure if the thowing of the bouquet is technically a tradition or not so, the removal of the garter is another one!
I would love to see Cove remove the garter and his cute flustered face when trying.
Ever since Baxter mentioned that he doesn't want to see Cove or Jaime disrespect each other by shoving cake in each other's face if the other person doesn't want that... I have wanted the option for that to be a mutual decision Cove and Jaime can make. My Jaime has the type of personality that would LOVE something goofy like that.
Being able to have a first look before the ceremony
I don't know why I see Cove and MC disappearing at one point of the wedding just to have some peaceful alone time, of course would come back before people get worried :P
I absolutely love this idea. It fits Cove so well and personally, my MC would need some time away from the huge social situation.
mc carrying cove or cove carrying mc over the threshold of the bedroom!
Jumping the broom.
Came here to say this. I would love to have jumping the broom as option.
