You heard it first folks. Joe is now French...
I never reviewed the history leading up to The Troubles, so this was a good one.
When I worked at a call center I would pour the cold brew concentrate over ice and go through like a bottle a day.

You mentioned it in passing (which is absolutely fair) but the Monmouth Rebellion and the subsequent "bloody assizes" is absolutely worth an eposode. A bunch of holdout West country puritans with pitchfolks and the idiot bastard of Charles II get owned in a ditch in the middle of the night by James II. The survivors get executed by Bloody Judge Jefferies, who is only able to ease the pain from his gaul stones by drinking gallons of wine and being perpetually full of stagnant piss. Peak English energy.
The thing most commentary on the north of Ireland misses is how small it is (the population of a medium sized city in a space not much bigger than many large cities). In a place that small, nearly every person was either impacted by, or knew someone who was impacted by, the Troubles. It’s a hard thing to grasp, outside of that community, just how devastating that extent of involvement can be. Here’s one of my stories: My parents were Republican lapsed Protestants, and were involved in the Social Democratic and Labour Party’s civil rights campaign in the sixties. My father’s family, however, were monster raving lunatic unionists. One of his uncles by marriage currently sits in the House of Lords. This uncle was the subject of an IRA assassination attempt. The hit squad shot him using Thompson submachine guns. Unfortunately, the ammunition had been improperly stored (Irish bogs are terrible on ammunition), and misfired. He ended up with clothes full of bullet holes, a huge messiah complex, and absolutely no injuries.
Oh shit. He went there.
I looked up how much 10 million pounds would be adjusted for inflation... it's just shy of £2 billion. £200 pounds in the late 1600s would be about £40k today. We're talking vast sums of money here. Jesus Christ
an episode on oubliettes around the world would be amazing
Ah yes the patented Joe Kassabian breakfast.
I really need a cigarette
I am so fucking stoked for this. And it's a 4 part series!
Is the audio poopoo garbage for anyone else in parts?
No fucking way.
I hunt purely because venison tastes amazing.
Hell yeah my great grandfather is smiling from IRB heaven. Hope the radicals don’t flame you guys for not demonizing their enemies enough
Is one of these going to be on Bloody Sunday?
Which one? The Irish and British both love to be naming shit Bloody Sunday.
The thing about Charles II of England is that he *did* have a lot of children, just none with his wife. Lol
If the sick train violence in Northern Ireland is The Troubles. The American civil War would be called The Squabbles.
Living in Huntingdon (UK), Cromwell's birthplace where everything is named after him, now feels even weirder.
Was at Mummers New Years Parade in Philly and an old protestant Northern Irish guy said my family were probably horse rustlers for having to come to America not that they were fugitives from the Troubles
Perfect timing. Just finished Derry Girls.
Love The Troubles Podcast! Absolutely recommending for anyone who wants a more in-depth look!
26+6=1
At work, haven't listened yet. Just been listening to the Wolfe Tones to prep myself ahead of time! Tiocfaidh ár lá!
Listen to The Irish Brigade as well!
LETS FUCKING GO
It’s always the British
I know right? You try to be balanced & give some benefit of the doubt before embracing ultra-nationalist stereotypes about “perfidious Albion”… & then they pull some shit like the Windrush scandal or the clusterfuck with the Northern Ireland Protocol. The whole UK Establishment has been repeatedly shown to be incapable of keeping its word on anything
1/4. Oh I'm so excited. Up the RA
Seriously. This is going to be one hell of a series. I should also probably stop singing IRA songs to my little kid. . .
