EARLY EPISODE: The Battle of Perryville

During the US Civil War, a group of men with some of the strangest names we've ever heard on the show accidentally fight a battle over a stagnant pond while their commanders were somewhere else.

Regarding the topic of "everybody sounds the same" - that heavily plays into how Stonewall Jackson died. When his group of soldiers ran into another Confederate regiment, they announced Stonewall was with them and for them to lay down their arms. The other men, thinking it was a trick, opened fire.

This is the first battle that's been talked about on the show that I have personal, direct familial connection to. My great X3 grandfather was in one of those Ohio artillery units at the battle.

My hangover cure is 2 ibuprofen, a litre or two of Irn Bru and a couple of morning rolls with scrambled egg. If I still feel shit after that, I go back to sleep.

Joe made my day calling out the rejuvenating powers of a Garbage Plate! Eaten only hungover or inebriated. Fun fact: Rochester’s AAA baseball team the Red Wings sometimes use alternate uniforms and play as the Rochester “Plates” with the food woven into the design

Yes, Shelby Foote hate I’m for it…Has anyone ever pressed Ken Burns on why he made him the focus of the series?

It’s the voice and the man is an excellent storyteller. He’s a terrible historian but he knew how to spin a tale. He has an interesting background. His grandmother was Jewish, which led to him experiencing discrimination in the south while in college. At one point he supported the civil rights movement. But he retained the patriarchal views of the Southern aristocracy towards black people and believed that his brush with discrimination due to his Jewish heritage meant he understood what they go through. Which is where his heel turn began and his mind got melted.

Kentuckian here and I can confirm that every hollar is indeed a glory hole hollar. Also, My wife is from near Perryville and I can’t wait to tell her about Bushrod Johnson charging off of Knob hill to attack Bottom farm.

Is this where we leave questions for the legion? Because I have wondered this for almost 30 years now and I'm not as educated on world history as the hosts. Mid 1990's growing up in rural Northern California, we had foreign exchange students at my small high school (graduating class was 90 kids), each year was different students. My Jr year one of the kids was named George, from Georgia, the country. Admittedly, we didn't know there was a country called Georgia. George was a quiet cool kid, got popped a few times shoplifting booze or asking rando adults to buy him booze, but seemed normal. One morning before school kids are skateboarding in the courtyard, trying to show off, this one kid tries to nose grind a picnic table and goes head first into the concrete. He's out cold, bleeding from the head, some kids scream, some run for a teacher. George busts into full on front line medic, whips his shirt off, gets it wet in a water fountain, then in a single twirl turns it into a tourniquet. He starts barking orders at kids, "raise his legs, support his neck, watch his arms!". This ain't high school first aid, George had seen some shit. My question is I know there was various civil wars after the fall of the USSR, but what conflict was Georgia in? What other countries did they fight? Wikipedia has a lengthy entry, but I figured Nate and Joe could break it down into a digestible understanding. Love the show and hopefully this gets read!

We covered this during our Russian invasion of Georgia series but there was a civil war after Georgian independence from the USSR.

Kentucky - let's not forget this is the state that not only let Ken Ham build his stupid Ark Encounter, they gave him a shitload of money to do so. And probably continue to give him a shitload of money.

Just regarding the diarrhea thing: I'm starting to wonder how many people covered on this podcast had undiagnosed Inflammatory Bowel Disease, because uncontrollable diarrhea is a major symptom. I was diagnosed at 15 after it caused life threatening sepsis, and it's an utterly shitty thing to deal with even with medication and management (the shit pun was intended). With that out of the way, Joe is absolutely right that it's unlikely to make your colleagues hate you so much they want to kill you. It can make you grumpy and miserable so people avoid you, but wanting to kill a colleague is probably something else in their personality.

I legit snarfed my water when Tom said, "when someone has blown it up because there is a slight humidity to the air." Thank god I was at home at the time and not on public transport because explaining what I'd just heard would be worse than the accident itself.

The real battle was between forty thousand besties camping in the woods and at least that many gastrointestinal tracts Say what you like about RFK Jnr and Hegseth, but they're well on their way to making forty thousand men vs. gastrointestinal afflictions competitive again after a century-long losing streak for the bacteria and parasites. For too long, marching columns of men have not been preceded by roiling clouds of bog fog and identifiable from beyond the horizon by stink lines - As The Founding Fathers Intended Re: historical staff rides, it's kind of a uniquely American Civil War phenomenon. If you try that for something as recent as the Battle of Shanghai (1937) you can surveil the landscape from any number of skyscrapers, but beyond the shape of the river and the old international settlement basically everything else is different and if anything counter-productive to understanding the terrain of the time
