I would love to listen to this weekly. One thing i would recommend if you decide to do this weekly is to maybe take a short break between shows. I dont know about podcasting but ive had times when i watch an absolute dogshit show and it kills any motivation i have to start another so having some breaks in between shows would probably help to prevent that

Yay we finally got passed the worst of the pacing problems! Still a rly strong anime I just prefer the pacing of the manga (fma03 slowd it down *too* much imo). I love Greed he is one of my faves. I am always a little sad they had to cut some of his screen time like him having a misunderstanding that Ed is dead (he was out of town in the manga and thats why Bradley shows up because he runs into Ed at his inspection) and has a whole convo with the chimera on whether they should apologise to Al bc he is only 14 and Greed is like "im sorry for ur loss". Its all very cute. But luckily the writing is so strong that even with scenes cut the chimera and greed make such a good impact!! Anyways I loooove the next batch of episodes they are do fucking good :)

I too would love to listen to this weekly - I watched FMA:B a number of years ago, recently enough that hearing you guys discuss it in detail brings it all back, so I love the show. Plus it means that someday you might get to Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which as fans of Evangelion I think you'd absolutely love, since TTGL is very deliberately created as 'Evangelion if Shinji had a functional support network'.

Patlabor is one of my favorite anime! I picked it up after finishing evangelion for the third time and still having that mech itch. I would love a series on that show!

This is 100% not your fault and is the English dub's fault for not correcting their pronunciation since the 2003 series, but it really throws me off that Jean Havoc's name is said like "Gene". It's the French name Jean. I really don't know how they messed it up the first time, but they shouldn't have kept it wrong just because people were used to it from the first series, or whatever their intention was.

Some people might prefer the 2003 series, but that and Brotherhood are not equivalent adaptations. The 2003 series is mostly stuff made up by the anime writers since the manga wasn't finished (as was the style at the time). Watching Brotherhood is watching the canon version of the story, where the characters who were introduced are used as they were meant to be by the author. And the great character work and humanity that's emblematic of Arakawa's writing is seriously lacking in the 2003 FMA. There are far more one-dimensional characters and characters that start off important and then just kind of drag along and stop being very relevant (i.e. Scar). Also, the vibe of it is really depressing for some reason, especially near the end, so it's not a very "fun" watch for a lot of it, IMO.

I might have been the person that said that there's more context for what Hughes did in Ishval elsewhere, but it IS partially in Brotherhood, and expanded upon in the manga. It's not a sidestory, there's just a whole volume of the manga that mostly deals with an extended flashback, but got severely cut down because for some reason the people who made Brotherhood decided it would only be one episode. So I highly recommend reading volume 15 (according to the original tankobon release) when you get to that point in the anime if you want to know more about what happened in Ishval than what the anime shows because it was unfortunately cut up for time.

I guess that the episode that introduces the Xing characters might be the dividing line for the second part of the series because it's when they start covering stuff that wasn't even touched by the 2003 series. Like, previous parts of the story were changed between the manga and that anime, but a lot of the big plot beats were the same. From now on it's all "new" stuff. Also, I think pretty much everyone thinks that the second opening is the weakest opening of the series. It's the most "generic rock song" one, and if you know Japanese/look up the lyrics, it's the only theme that doesn't reflect the emotions of the characters in the arc and is more of a song about "adventure"—the sort of thing you see in One Piece openings all the time. HOWEVER, it's only up from here. I think the third and fourth openings are superb.

Regarding the "original anime", the 2003 anime has more of Greed and the chimeras, but besides Al's kidnapping, the overall plot is solidly in the non-canon part of the story. Martel is in way more of the 2003 anime story, as she escapes from this raid in Dublith and travels around with Al for a while. She didn't end up really endearing herself to me more, but she was there. The manga has more of Greed and the chimeras, but it's mostly more character work within the same scenes that are in Brotherhood; they don't have extra scenes. Still, it would've been nice to have these extra moments if Brotherhood wasn't made with the mentality that "we can rush through the first quarter of the series because people basically saw it in the 2003 anime" and was trying to be a more holistic experience. Oh well. Read the manga for some extra stuff if you like Brotherhood.

The way Arakawa writes characters with an overall sense of humanity is probably my favourite thing about the series. This will be more relevant as the conflicts in the series ramp up, but she does a really masterful job making no character feel disposable and no villain 100% pure evil.

I think it's funny that Joe reads "violently murdering someone" as something that Ed is more likely to do, but throughout more of the series it actually ends up feeling like Ed wants to avoid killing no matter what, whereas Al will at least do it in self-defense. I get how Ed reads as violent, though, because he's very prone to emotional outburst compared to Al. It's just that despite that, he's more likely to yell at a person than actually start attacking them.
