On the 4 meter polearm - that's only 13 feet, not 17. Long enough that it's going to take both hands, but short enough that it's really not that hard to use. Using it better than the other guy who also has a 4 meter polearm, that's the tricky part.
They are overselling how easy it is to train a matchlock soldier. It takes weeks of drill in order to perform the rather complicated set of tasks to load and fire a matchlock in stress of battle.
In regard to Tom's comment about white guys doing ciphers... Counter point, Pete and Bas. Specifically the track Sindhu Sesh. If Tom has never seen P&B, I recommend doing it blind folded. Then replay the video and let him watch.
