This is going to be a long series
In 1592 a newly unified Japan, under the control of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, launched an invasion of the Joseon Kingdom with an army numbering in the hundreds of thousands. The war would eventually consist of two different invasions over the course of almost 6 years and suck in most of Asia, killing well over 1 million people in the process, all while Japan accomplished absolutely nothing.

woah a pointless war in a relatively narrow waterway that sucks in a large portion of Asia either directly or indirectly and shanks basically everyone involved but most of all the guys who started it? that could never happen in the 21dt centu– oh wait
Q
A newly established ruler sending out his dubiously loyal underlings to a war of conquest to distract them and secure his rule, resulting in absolutely devastating consequences for the regular people they invade. Now where have I heard that before? Over and over again?
Context puns will continue until understanding improves!
On the topic of Nobunaga making Hideyoshi his sandal-bearer, there's a Nobunaga quote from Assassin's Creed Shadows that goes so hard. During a meeting with the Jesuits, he's intrigued by Yasuke and wishes to recruit him into his army. The head Jesuit agrees but says "he is good for little more than bearing your sandals." Nobunaga's reply: "Under me, sandal-bearers become lords."
"Hideyoshi and the Process of Unification" new band name...bringing you their latest album, "Shartcore" influenced by the dulcit tones of The Gerogerigegege.
Sandra Bullock in the Shogun version of The Blindside
This guys just Griffith without the necklace or the boyfriend.
In the next episode of the Imjin War: FUCKING TURTLE SHIPS!!!
Looking forward to the🐢 🚢
My cousin once cleared out the entire bar at 11:00pm on a Friday night by putting $20 in the jukebox and playing “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” like 15 times in a row. Do you have any idea how unpleasant the vibe has to be for a tourist town bar to clear out at 11:00pm on a Friday?
The Confucianism at the Joseon court was so bad that when King Sejeong had the Hangul script invented to write the Korean language to replace the system based on Chinese characters they were using, the Confucians argued against it because it would be a breach of filial piety to stop using their “big brother’s” script– this despite Chinese and Korean being completely different languages that had different requirements for a writing system. As a result, it was centuries before Hangul became the majority script, despite it being designed specifically for Korean
woah, religious semi-hereditary bureaucrats being really goofy about language to protect their own institutional power and screwing their own country over? that could never happen in the 21st centu– oh wait
Military people from shitty backgrounds is so real. I always say I joined the military and still got yelled at and worked nonstop but at least I was paid and fed.
Very hype for this series. When I was younger I gad an entire fantasy world based around the end of the Sengoku Jidai. Looking forward to an episode/series on Shōgun Barack Hussein Nobunga as well!
I will not boo you Joe! In fact, encourage you!
I read the 1592 in the intro as 1952 and was very confused.
Pronunciation was pretty decent for most of the episode but that "Yi Seong-gye" read had me reeling
Don't accept a peacock from your false homie! Peacocks are complete bastards. They'll peck at your vege beds, wake up the nrighbourhood at dawn with a cry that sounds like they're being murdered, traumatise your cat and steal your fried chicken. They also have to be cooked really carefully so they don't dry out and become tough on the spit.
"Are you gonna be daimyo" *guitar riff*
Man I have had to listen to the French wars of religion three times just to partly grasp it. How many times is my stupid forgetful old ass gonna have to listen to this one?
The angriest I've ever seen a waitress get was when my brother dropped 30 dollars on the spotify jukebox app to play The Muppets version of Bohemian Rhapsody on repeat at Buffalo Wildwings.
Animal yelling "Mama" into everyone's ears before wandering off.
Oh FUUUCK yeah, been hoping for a new series soon
There’s a shitty bar in the suburbs of Dayton Ohio where I am permanently banned from touching the jukebox because I turned on bitches brew
You did nothing wrong.
Nate, I will not accept this Sister Ray slander. It's is perfectly abrasive in every way.
Regarding samurai rap battles: i'm pretty sure extemperanious poetry competitions were a popular party game in this era.
Currently reading the book "The other great game: the opening of Korea" which has this war as a backgroud character. We need a follow up series on the First Sino Japanese war after.
" BY GAWD IS THAT ADMIRAL YI'S MUSIC ? "
The topic that got me into history. My mom would bring home VHS's of Korean shows from the Asian market and one of the series she loved was about the Imjin War and Admiral Yi-Sun Shin. Loved that show even though it could be incredibly cheesy and low budget at times.
Its Imjin August, turtle ship summer, Joseon past July
Locking and loading every East Asian cultural reference available
