The Troupes de Marines weren't actually part of the French Navy- they were responsible to the Colonial Office. Today they're part of the French Amy *not* Navy- the latter has Marine Commandos instead.

the thing about Deerfield Mass. is that it’s in like one of the only relatively flat areas of New England that isn’t right on the coast, it’s directly in the middle of a very very long narrow valley with relatively small hills on either side, with a tributary running directly north and west of it and the Connecticut River snaking down the east side. if you’re defending this place in winter and your enemy is coming from the west, you’re literally surrounded by pre-prepared trench lines that provide your enemy the perfect stealthy approach, you also have a giant hilly forest to your southwest, which provides a great stealthy approach when the rivers aren’t frozen over. also, there’s not really a big road down the Conn. river valley yet, and like maybe one bridge going to the east over the big river, so good fuckin luck running away!

I forgot that Ferngulley had a name I thought that shit was just like a dream that they beam into everyone’s heads around age 6-7 or so to make us be nicer to the environment

I like to think that if Cobain had lived longer he would've become very good friends with Isaac Brock for like 3 months then they'd spend the next 20 years talking mad shit about each other.

Love this! Long time listener, but can someone tell me where on the Discord I can find some fun Donkey talk? I know it's a lovely little community and I want to be a part of it .

I can kind of understand why a fuckwit at a Tommy Robinson rally would think the Georgian flag is some sort of Crusader flag with the 5 red crosses. But racist fuckwits rarely actually have the reverence for the flag they claim to. There's all the people wearing flags as capes, so they drag on the ground. And they often get the flags wrong. Being from the continent of Australia, we often get our flag mixed up with other countries. There's a lot of dark blue flags with a Union Jack and something. Frequently our flag gets confused with Aotearoa/New Zealand. They have a red with white border Southern Cross, we have a white Southern Cross. Admittedly we also have that stupid 7 pointed star. The best mix up I ever came across, though, was a racist fuckwit I got into an argument with, who made some terrible remarks about First Nations people, and finished off with a heap of flag emojis she clearly thought were the Australian flag. But they weren't. She'd used the flag for.... Ascension Island. I knew immediately she hadn't used the right flag (that star was missing and it didn't have the Southern Cross), but I had no idea which flag emoji she was using. It took me a while to figure out it was Ascension Island. Which, by the way, is a chunk of rock in the Atlantic which has an air force base and several research facilities. You can stay there and it does actually look OK. She didn't think she'd used the wrong flag at first, which was fun, because I got to get really insulting. And then, the whole thing disappeared before I could get screenshots.

Oh, it gets funnier than that in person. I was passing by the Melbourne pro-war 'Iranian' 'monarchist' rally with all the king-in-exile placards and kingdom of Iran flags and figured why not, I've got two minutes I was semi-convinced that they might actually be dumb enough to believe that a freely and fairly democratically elected government would vote to install the king as a (semi? they disagreed) absolute monarch among other things when some of their co-marchers gave the game away by wearing Israeli and American flags and I was like... those are your guys? Aren't those countries the ones killing your people? And they were like uhhhhhhhh They made up for the embarrassment by really owning me hard by saying (and everybody clapped!) that no, there is no upper limit to how many of 'their' 'countrymen', down to the little children, they'd let them kill if it meant the remainder would be free to elect a monarchy friendly to those governments and anyway said governments having less than a 10% approval/favourability rating in Iran is only because they're uneducated and propagandised (oof) and they just need someone like the people at the pro-war march to come in and tell them the truth (wow) They did later get some of the ones wearing those flags to take them off and/or wear something a bit more in keeping with the supposed theme

I'm early in, and if we're getting out state beef out there let's do it. I don't respect the sovereignty of the state of Wisconsin. It's land should be divided amongst it's neighbors excluding Iowa.

G
George Toner · May 30, 2026

The real-life partitions of Poland and their gamer representations in Victoria 1 and Victoria 2 (damn you Paradox Interactive) were infuriating HOWEVER, hear me out, it would be extremely funny if Wisconsin's neighbours just decided that they'd had enough of people Wisconsining up in there and ended it. Though I would accord a disproportionate share to Iowa purely to spite you personally, what's the point of doing this kind of thing if you can't have a little fun with it

Is it bad that I’m picturing the Yorkshire men in the meeting of natives and Yorkshire men all being dressed like the Jimmies in 28 years later?

I saw Deerfield and immediately went "YES!" because my family is from that part of Massachusetts, though they showed up in the 1840s after all this happened. Now the main commerce in Deerfield is based around Yankee Candle.

The native peoples in Americas came through Beringia during the ice age. They most assuredly had snowshoes already when they did.

Love to hear my part of the world get cover. I used to go to the Schaghticoke Fair every summer. I always need to look up how to spell that, the English version of a Dutch spelling of a Native word is always an adventure.

I diagnose you with acute chronic 🤷 deseise… dark jokes aside, the great dying and the wars associated with it are a massively overlooked historical genocide

S
Sam Blackman · May 25, 2026

I’ve literally been to Deerfield Mass. multiple times in my life, there’s a butterfly sanctuary there called Magic Wings, pretty sure it’s still there, I also remember seeing a living history tour of a reproduction of the old garrison, there’s a blockhouse but I don’t remember if it’s original or a reconstruction, my bad

Stephen Yaxley Lennon being not antisemitic enough for a guy at a barely disguised neo-nazi rally is the most like, idk but that’s some wicked ulster Protestant type right wingedness lmfao

Whenever colonialism happens, the biggest, most aggressive, and collaborationist indigenous groups end up working with the colonists to butcher and enslave the other indigenous groups, getting rich and powerful in the process, but then inevitably becoming victims of the settlers too. It makes it really hard to root for them when they inevitably become the main anti-colonial resistance group. It's bastards all the way down.

AAAAYYYYY YEAH I’VE BEEN THERE TOO

H
Harry Evans · May 25, 2026

Sorry Nate, a smack barm pea wet is far worse than a hash brown sandwich. The "smack" is a slice of battered and fried potato The "barm" is a bread roll The "pea wet" is the runoff water from making mushy peas Only a place as wretched and degenerate as Wigan could create an abomination like this.

G
George Toner · May 25, 2026

It or something like it probably is fine dining in Mos Eisley/Tatooine There's got to be at least one Fremen tribe which in its oral traditions keeps the legend of the Smackbarmpeawet alive, that a day may come when it is served in every Sietch - not symbolically or ceremonially, but as a meal of the wretched and degenerate

You should take care to not release the Irish on land (for an example of the danger of this see the infestation known as Boston PD), but they are quite important for the maritime ecosystem where they keep the Mountbatten population under control. Nature is beautiful!

G
George Toner · May 25, 2026

Well, they say that farming them is more ethical but that creates its own problems as you see in Australia in general and Tasmania in particular. There's really no way to breed them at scale, whether in aquaculture or in e.g. Boston, in a way that doesn't create its own problems. A roast can't be all gravy, not every meal has to have two different types of potatoes, and the proper role of the Irish in a balanced Anglophone ecosystem is stirring up hysteria in the English. Ideally over miscegenation and racial degeneration, they only stir up fears over the other kind of bang when they're in captivity and/or distressed

G
George Toner · May 25, 2026

Sigh. I guess I'm just never looking at wattle and daub quite the same way again. Thanks, guys
