EARLY EPISODE: The USS Massachusetts, America's Dumbest Battleship
In a time before US Naval dominance, the not-quite-yet imperial power decided to modernize its Navy to a level that might enable it to compete with its European counterparts.
Instead, they created the USS Massachusetts and the Indiana Class. A battleship that was not a battleship, with guns so large they were more hazardous to the ship itself than any enemy, and so impossible to control the Navy kept crashing it into rocks.
There are two battleships named the USS Massachusetts. This is the BB-2. The one that fought in WWII is the BB-59

The Gatling guns were probably used as a ye olde form of point defense against soft targets like torpedo boats, dinghy’s and against enemy boarding actions etc
Joe is absolutely correct, I finished a manuscript for my own sci-fi novel back in December and now the first half needs to be rewritten and I do not wanna deal with the editing process, for now at least.
As someone who has also smoked weed with the black dahlia murder, Joe is right that’s a pretty easy experience to have lol
The first photo of this ship that came up when I googled it was its corpse at the bottom of the ocean
The last section of this ship's wikipedia article is titled "World War I and fate". I don't know why but reading "and fate" makes me think some mystical shit happened and now the wreck of the Massachusetts is the fulcrum of some arcane ritual. That or it's become an anime girl in FGO.
Your description of LRH's writing "work ethics" is best described by Andy Daly's quote on the Dead Author's Podcast : "First draft, last draft, get it out the door!"
Thoughts on the episode: Battle jackets (if you dont smell) can attract plenty of people. At the drive in is rad live (they opened for the pixies and NIN). And this week has sucked and I needed a big dumb boat episode
This is what happens when you tell Amelia Bedilia to build you a gunship
I had a fellow soldier who was at Fort Hood for seven years, all in one enlistment somehow. I don’t know how he survived.
I’m currently playing FF7 remake but really FF6 is the remake the people want. Or 8
Pumped for the lions led by donkeys battle of Jutland episode. Also Joe, more battleship episodes please. This shit slaps.
Just picked up Demons to read while on vacation. Sick.
I used to do some audio engineering back in the day and that shit can get rough. I'll never forget the time some dipshit with too much money and no talent booked our studio for a couple of weeks to record a terrible EP of shitty love songs he wrote for his girlfriend. Spent 8+ hours a day in the booth just polishing that turd. It was awful.
Y'all talking about At the Drive-In getting me nostalgic.
Fort Hood kind of sounds like the Norfolk Naval Station of the Army. Anyone given orders to there would rather open a vein. On a destroyer I was stationed on, we waited until a guy had the 00:00 to 04:00 watch and sewed has pants legs shut. When he got up at like 11:57 to put his coveralls on he pancaked face first right into the deck. He was a cool guy. Everyone loved him. It was funny as fuck.
Regarding the USS Oregon sailing all the way around South America: That wasn't the first time the US did something like this. That's why William Tecumseh Sherman completely missed the Mexican-American War, his ship sailed from the east coast to California, and by the time they got there the war was over. A funny side note to this: In one of Sherman's letters during this period, he commented on how hot he thought Brazilian women were when they stopped there for a while.
I've mixed podcasts and music before as well, and I can confirm with Nate's assessment that mixing music (especially your own) is way, way harder than a podcast. And since ear fatigue is a thing, it's totally possible to mix something well and then completely fuck it up once you cross that threshold.
it's truly horrific, i hate doing my own mixing, i try to do a quick once-over and wait a few days before listening to it again to avoid that ear fatigue.
Oh man Shocks must be so mad ya'll are talking about a boat named the Massachusetts without him.
Donald Ducking it
ATDI 4eva
I see you Dostoyevsky’s editor and raise you Dumas’ editor having a worse job
spare a thought for Proust's editor
it's so jarring to hear anyone say anything but "David Foster Wallace" when referencing him
I've heard people call him DFW and I had the "Dallas Fort Worth airport?" pause.
Oh, the one where the turrets could fall off
Lmao the trash talk piss man. I saw trash talk like 4 times I think? I grew up in East Peoria, IL and similar to joes experience, hardcore bands always stopped on their way between STL and Chicago. Got to see ceremony, blacklisted, weekend nachos, harms way so many times
Saw the title and thought they were talking about the USS Massachusetts from WW2 and was gonna get worried. She actually did a lot and is a great museum in Fall River if you can visit.
I was just about to mention Battleship Cove.
"You're gonna counter that weight" xD
I am still not convinced Elon Musk didn't fuck something up and accidentally created time travel. In which he travels back in time and forces his battleship design from when he was 5 into production.
The blueprints for the Maine burning like the Imperium loosing an STC and never being able to make that Battle Barge again.
Dumber than the litorial combat ship? Really?
LCS isn't a battleship
Dumb boat!!!!
As a proud masshole I have never been so offended by a podcast episode title until this. I’m also biased cause I volunteered on the Massachusetts in college. Super cool museum ship.
OH THANK GOD it’s a different USS Massachusetts. Carry on gentlemen.
Very excited for this. I've got some shit to do before I listen, but I've quite literally licked that boat while kayaking past her.
Now I have to ask about the taste
America's dumbest battleship SO FAR
Noo, not ol' Big Mamie!
