Lions Led By Robots 18: Beasting It

For this month's LLBR, Joe and Tom reconvene to discuss episode 2 of Neon Genesis Evangelion ("The Beast"). It's an episode that speaks to our respective early-teen years of listening to terrible music on headphones and being depressed. Some of us have not stopped doing this and that's okay too.

The angels dont know where Nerv is, its just that Adam is on the cross in the lowest level of Nerv HQ so that's why they're coming in hot for the building

Might be getting ahead of myself but PLEASE tell me we're getting an End of Evangelion standalone episodes down the line

Regarding Travelodge Rewards: I think if you stay at a Travelodge too frequently they send a note to your family asking if you are OK.

Kensuke (the kid with glasses)'s family work for NERV. He is also the stereotypical military nerd kid at school who knows way too much about WW2.

Ok ngl hearing everyone laugh at the Rich Piana: "...tastes like shit" was worth it

It should be Bodybuilders against Isekai. You’re so weak you get ejected to another world? Pathetic.

Seen this show over a dozen times. Can’t wait to see Joes retrospective after he’s finished with the show + End of Evangelion

Everyone watched and finished this show was Shinji at some point. I watched the original TV Evangelion and this version. Even as a full grown adult now, I have very few people to share my thoughts on this show. Glad you guys are watching and sharing thoughts.

Unban me from the discord please, reign in your mods a bit maybe too. I got muted for a week for telling a guy to stop rehabilitating Grant, then banned just now basically for telling some mod named Subcomandante HughJass that he was sensitive and a prick.

Like, don’t have a history channel (lol) if you don’t want people to have arguments about history, turns out it’s a fucking contentious topic for reasons that might be self explanatory.

Can I fight Tom??!! I do Crossfit and Hyrox!! 😤 As a Hyrox Coach I was calling my class my "Hyrox Superstars 💖✨💪" on our insta posts because it was cute, way before the stupid "Hybrid Rockstar" meme became a thing!!

Just so you know: in your first game of w40k you will loose badly. That’s just how it is unless you play against another first timer.

R
RuPaul Craig · August 20, 2025

Ah but if you play against another newbie the game will take EVEN longer and be more confusing. The 40k beginner’s paradox

N
Noblese Oblahaj · August 20, 2025

Joe: as someone who paints minis with shaky hands, there are ways of holding your hands to mitigate this. You'll have to look it up, but it's kind of like this: hold mini in left hand. Put side of right hand against left hand so that your pinkies are loosely against each other, as if they are the spine of a book laid open and your hands are the back and front cover. Don't push/pressure your hands together, just let the weight of them resting together provide the force. It really helps once you work it out. There are pictures and YouTube examples online.

Noblese Oblahaj · August 20, 2025

I also really recommend Goobertown Hobbies and Midwinter Minis for beginner tutorials. Oh, and good light plus even a cheap magnifying headset are great if your eyes are shot.

I will say as someone who has seen it a couple of times before (though a solid decade since last viewing) that without any spoilers I do think Joe is picking up on the stuff. Maybe not all the stuff, but definitely on the right track, and I'll leave it at that. I am however delighted to hear the covering NGE is causing an upswing in interaction and listens to LLBD. I'll admit I fell off the Gundam train, but that's not on you guys and more on just my very neutral feelings on Gundam.

The platinum edition commentaries for Eva was mostly just the director complaining that everytime he fixed the script to make sense in English the gainax contacts would try and get him to go back to the exact translation. They had to fight really hard to say child instead of children in the original dub.

M
MoistVonLipwig · August 20, 2025

I will say, I understand why they were so adamant about "Children". I don't know where I fall on it exactly but to explain somewhat: Normally the Japanese word for Child, 子供 or Kodomo, like most Japanese nouns, lacks a plural form, so I think that's part of it. More importantly though the word used to refer to the Eva pilots is 第一児 (Dai-ichi Ji or First Child). Dai in this context is just "first" which is simple enough but Ji is very unusual. It means child but it's very clinical, like offspring or something. "First Born" kind of gets closer but sounds more mythological than clinical to me. Neonate, Infant, Youth or Juvenile all get close but all have connotations that don't quite work either. So "Children" is more like a formal noun or title. I don't know where I fall on it. I think for fans who've watched the show many times it works well because it gives a sense of being 'off' but for first time viewers it's just confusing.

If you mention going into this blind to an Aussie, they might assume you mean doing this drunk. Which would also be bloody hilarious.

Its taken me over a decade to get decently good at painting minis. But good or bad, its fun as heck. I'd highly recommend using Contrast/Speed paints.

The big 7 disc soundtrack called Evangelion S2 Works that was released in 1998 has a ton of alternate versions of music from the soundtrack as well as the music that Shinji was listening to on his walkman that you only get a very quiet and muffled version of in the show!

S
Steven Barchus · August 20, 2025

As a 32 year old who grew up sporadically watching Evangelion on late night TV, I just recently watched it in its entirety (on Netflix plz dont do that) I didnt realize how excited for this series I am, rewatching along with the podcast. No spoilers ftw

NowhereMan661 · August 20, 2025

I read Rei's smile as being genuine, and not just her doing it because Shinji told her to, because it's important in Shinji and Rei's developing relationship being one of genuine care for another human being. Shinji is actually concerned for Rei as a person, recognizing her as something other than just a tool, and he's afraid that she is hurt or dead, and I think Rei recognizes this and is touched by it, in the same way that she recognizes Gendo "caring" for her beyond just her being a tool. The way other people view you being important in how you view yourself will become a more important theme as the series goes on, and Rei having someone view her as an actual human being and not just a thing is very important for her as a character.

M
MoistVonLipwig · August 20, 2025

Exactly, when Joe was doing his cynical take on it (which may be correct) I just thought "Don't say that, it's too sad!"

N
NowhereMan661 · August 19, 2025

I kind of wish you guys would talk a bit more about Toji and Kensuke. They're Shinji's first real friends, and they have some fun and important scenes together, like Toji telling Shinji to punch him so they're even from him punching him before. In fact, there are a lot of little character moments that are very important to the story. I get that it's hard to remember it all though.

Every time Shinji enters a woman's home it's immediately the meme "damn bitch, you live like this?" without exception. And then he cleans the place up. I've seen a lot of women say that this part of Shinji's character, cooking, cleaning, being "housebroken" (read househusband), etc., is actually pretty attractive. Despite his flaws and antisocial personality, he's still a very courteous and caring person.

M
MoistVonLipwig · August 20, 2025

Yeah a big part of Shinji's character is that he actually is quite lovable, he just doesn't perceive himself as worthy of it so he's incapable of seeing it.
