Announcing Project: WIZARDS BURNT THE TOAST

Welcome to Project Wizards Burnt the Toast, a comprehensive overhaul of Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition using only what WotC provides in the creative commons. Project Wizards Burnt the Toast (WBTT) is built on the same mechanics as 5th edition, with those mechanics expanded upon in exciting new ways.

Everything in project WBTT will be 5th edition backward compatible, with playtesting beginning hopefully by the end of January. Once WBTT is finalized, the system will be used for both my campaigns, all Living Erenel community campaigns and hopefully other games in our discord and at your table.

If you’re a Gamingbrew Patron only interested in 5th edition, everything designed in WBTT will be usable in your home campaigns.

WHAT'S NEW IN WIZARDS BURNT THE TOAST?

I’d like to release the first playtest PDF without any new rules teased beforehand so the community can react to it together in real time! This is also a playtest. Feedback is essential! When providing feedback, please be as clear and direct as possible. A private form and public discord channel will be available once the first playtest begins.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Before the first playtest begins, head to the Gamingbrew discord channel #wbtt-chat and discuss what you’d like to see in a revised 5th edition ruleset. You could also discuss what you don’t like about current 5th edition. While I can’t guarantee your requests will make it into WTTB, focusing on mechanics for our community is helpful. I suspect much of what you'll say may already in the first playtest.

Once the first playtest is released, I hope to schedule WBTT one-shots focused on the new content with multiple group participation.

DOES THIS MEAN YOU ARE REVISING EVERY SRD CLASS?

YEP!

IS WIZARDS BURNT THE TOAST THE REAL NAME OF THIS SYSTEM?

Nope just the project name, haha. Once the project is on the home stretch, the Erenel website will be converted to the new system.

WHY PROJECT WIZARDS BURNT THE TOAST?

Since the OGL debacle began, I’ve spent the past few weeks talking with many of you and creators in the industry on a path forward. While not shared by everyone, a common theme is not wanting to support WotC monetarily but a desire to continue playing 5th edition. WBTT allows me to continue making 5th edition content for those of you who love the system without you feeling the need to support wizards of the coast.

KOBOLD PRESS: PROJECT BLACK FLAG

Kobold Press has announced its intent to create a system compatible with its 5th edition product. If Black Flag remains compatible with 5th edition, our Project Wizards Burnt the Toast will be converted to the Kobold Press system under the Open RPG Creative License (ORC). However, there is a reasonable amount of time until this happens. Project Black Flag begins its first playtest in February and will have multiple playtests leading up to its Kickstarter over the next few months.

OGL 1.0(a)

Wizards of the Coast claims that nothing about 1.2 will impact content licensed under 1.0(a). Many in the community still believe they can not deauthorize 1.0(a). Project Wizards Burnt the Toast will not be released under any OGL and only uses the creative commons and the fan content policy (similar to sites such as Star Wars 5e or Mass Effect 5e). This may change as the OGL situation is fluid and I’ll continue to monitor the situation.

Unless they go back on their word to put content in the creative commons - I'll be making toast and eventually raising a black flag.
