Life after OGL 1.0 - What are your plans?

Hey all,

I’m sure many of you are aware of the OGL situation with Dungeons and Dragons, as it has dominated social media and begun leaking into mainstream news. I’ve posted about it multiple times in the Gamingbrew Discord but have purposely waited until WotC responded before making an official post.

As of this post, I think Linda Codega’s article describes the current situation the best, and I recommend giving it a read!

We’re headed into the “great fracture” as WotC’s grip slips and the TTRPG renaissance begins. Their update shows that WotC plans to challenge anyone who still uses OGL 1.0(a), which I and many others use to create 5E content. There may be ways around this, but if all of you are moving on from 5E, what’s the point!

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS?

I’m incredibly proud of the community we’ve all built here, and in the face of this upcoming cataclysm for 5E creators, I ask what you would like to see. Please vote for the system you are most interested in using the form link below.

The google form is anonymous, so don’t hesitate to voice your genuine opinion and leave comments or concerns. The options chosen are based on my confidence level in using the system at this very early stage.

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

  • I value being part of an open gaming license that also has the player base to support 3rd party creators.

  • If you want to stay with 5E, that is okay. WotC doesn’t own your table. If they don't screw it up I would still create for 5E in some fashion.

  • We’re still months from Kobold Press Black Flag and other newly announced games.

  • There is a strong possibility I will be writing for more than one system.

It’s been a stressful whirlwind, and like other 5E creators, I am emotionally exhausted. If you participated in #opendnd or canceled your dndbeyond subscription, know that I greatly appreciate it and your support.

There is much more to Gamingbrew than just creating 5E supplements; this is by no means the end. Great opportunity comes from great moments and I have exciting projects I hope to announce very soon.

I thank you all for your patience while navigating this headache.
