Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson (Patron-Only Early Access/Ad-Free)
Perhaps Johnson's most popular book.
A short, darkly comedic novel split into 11 short Chapter-Stories about a recovering alcoholic/heroin addict nicknamed 'Fuckhead' (Johnson's own nickname at one point in his life).
Didn't enjoy it as much as Train Dreams, but his ability to surprise was impressive.

But also also, you gotta read Angels. Sort of the companion thematically. It blew my socks off, lit my brain on fire, and ruined other books for a good month. And it’s only like 200 pages edit: also, this is the 69 page document of quotes on writing that Denis Johnson collected over his life and shared with his students at the Iowa Workshop every year. tinyurl.com/bc1fe2re
Malik, thanks for sharing this.
Great review! But also, where’d you get that shirt?
Try his Tree of Smoke.
If you like this book then you'd like some Dan Fante (son of John). Spitting off Tall Buildings, Mooch, Chump Change, etc. It's great stuff, like Bukowski x2.
This sounds really interesting, thank you. It’s shame when you read a good book at the wrong time though. At least you’re able to offer a balanced review. What prompted you to start reading the bible?
