DevLog #8 GPS Rework

While I’m still working on the next Rest Anywhere update and getting Walk Anywhere ready for release alongside it, I’ve also started playing around with the GPS.

For ETS2, the obvious inspiration was the legendary TomTom...

And I’ve already managed to get several fully functional and dynamic features working:

  • a banner showing the next turn or change of direction,

  • an active route progress bar showing fuel stations and parking areas along your planned route,

  • real-time speeding warnings.

But that’s not all. I’m also working on:

  • lane guidance,

  • road numbers,

  • possibly even dynamically generated street names,

  • a much more detailed map with 3D building models,

  • and the one I’m probably most ambitious about — satellite view.

There’s still plenty to figure out, but it’s already starting to look very promising.

Later on, I’ll also share some progress on the upcoming Rest Anywhere update.

Hello Gelex, is there an opportunity to apply as a tester for this plugin/mod? And will this also be available for ATS?

G

It’s still at such an early stage that there isn’t really anything worth testing yet. Of course, the navigation system will also be available in ATS — the only difference is that it’ll be based on Garmin instead.

This will be promods compatible? right? I am loving your mods, thing is about your mods compared to others is that you work on stuff players want, that's rare to find in this community now.. In my opinion though you should add another tier for testers, get more feedback from the mods, make sure there isn't any bugs and everything (it'd speed up the process of releasing things I imagine)

Believe me, there’s already been a huge amount of testing behind all of this. And with some of these features, I’m not just adding something that already exists — I have to work out how to build it from the ground up. I’m not really trying to be the first anyway. I’d rather take the time to get it right. Of course, I still want you guys to be able to try it as soon as possible.

Looks great, would you be able to make one that is simhub compatible? I use sim dashboards for more detail. But mostly cause my eyesight isn’t great for seeing the game screen on a laptop screen 👍

G
Gelex · September 26, 2026

i don't even know what the simhub is :D

Youre my fav ETS2 modder i swear, just release them already haha :D

G
Gelex · September 26, 2026

Believe me, I’d love to release it right now, but before I do, I need to be sure everything works properly. I don’t want to put something out there before it’s actually ready.

Looks amazing 😍 does the thing on the right also work?

G
Gelex · September 26, 2026

Everything you see on screen is fully functional — the turn banners show the actual direction and distance to the next turn, while the route progress bar displays real parking areas along your route, together with the actual distance to each one.
