Radio War Nerd EP #245 — Protests from the Years of Lead to Genoa G8, with Annibale
Guest: Annibale
Recorded: September 9, 2020
Popular RWN guest Annibale joins the War Nerd to discuss how Italy's Years Of Lead and "strategy of tension" compare to today's protests and police violence in the US. A wide-ranging discussion, Annibale explains the Battle of Valle Giulia and Pasolini's famous poem, the Years Of Lead and Cossiga's infamous interview, up through the 2001 Genoa G8 Summit...

What was the name of the CPI organization that enforced crowd discipline? L'ordine sozial?
"Servizio D'Ordine"
When you mentioned how much US cops are paid, I remembered recently hearing that in Chile, everyone except the cops and the military was forced into private sector pensions. They are spared the discipline of the Market. Otherwise they might not be so willing to to break fingers on the Markets behalf. Freemarket economics reminds me of the Syndic too much (the book not the actual Syndic as portrayed in it)!
Neoliberals always have their eye on the ball. You see this a lot. When Saakashvili took over Georgia, all the police salaries were massively increased (and covered by Soros for awhile) while everyone else was subjected to mass privatization and price liberalization.
Really appreciate Annibale's perspective on the virus, I played the episode for several people. Would be interested in Isa Blumi's take as well. His episode on Yemen was one of the most powerful things I'd heard on RWN and his book was mind-blowing. From his twitter, I see he has a very strong opinion on the virus. Thanks as always.
Strong opinion indeed... From a quick glance at his twitter, I get the impression he thinks it's an "imaginary plague"/"a bad flu equivalent", that there is "there is no scientific evidence of a single person transmitting it to another", it's part of a "techno-totalitarian" plan, that people are "bossed-around" by "bizarre orders" (like wearing masks I guess?), Bill Gates is in on it, and that big pharma is making people think hydroxychloroquine isn't effective. Maybe a 9/11 truther, JFK/RFK truther, and anti-vaxxer too? That would be a fun conversation indeed, heh :D
Slap Shot is a masterpiece
Has anyone read the book Backlands about the Canudos campaign? I just picked up a copy. It seems like a pretty good sequel to the Triple Alliance episode (as long as we are doing episode suggestions).
Hey guys: Could I humbly make a suggestion for a future show? I’d like to hear an in-depth book review of....drum roll please....The Art of War by Sun Tzu. As old as this book is, it’s precepts are still practical for war today and reading it should be considered a right-of-passage for every war nerd. I’ve actually read it myself, but I would love to hear Dr. Dolan give an in-depth explanation of Sun Tzu’s treatise. Keep up the great work.
