'The Base' are run by feds if memory serves so anything they do is literally just state terrorism

Oh man Huckabee LOVES ethnic disses. Dude's brain would explode if he went on Chinese Instagram and saw all the people over there who own dogs as pets, he can't understand it

Stephen Miller should be tortured to death.

Drew Gremel · July 21, 2025

The Stephen Miller clip is pretty standard rhetoric for Americans in 2003. I heard stuff like that all the time from my nice, churchgoing neighbors back then

a clash of purple · July 23, 2025

In my experience, Americans' view of torture in the War on Terror era was informed by the TV show 24. That made it cool, as long as a cool guy (or gal) was doing it for an important reason and they felt bad about it afterwards. In my social circles, once the news about Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo broke, anyone who was pro-torture stopped talking about it. There just wasn't any credible excuse for those kinds of abuses, and they weren't even cool - I remember the photos of uniformed American troops with shit-eating grins standing around some guy handcuffed to a chair with a hood over his head; very lame and very nauseating. The liberals I know all really wanted and expected Obama to close Gitmo and other torture centers. The conservative take on Fox was basically "Only pussies don't torture people." I will say, fuck that dead POS John McCain. I wish the North Vietnamese had killed him instead of shipping his ass back here. The media loved fellating him over his supposed opposition to torture, and it's pure BS. In the War on Terror the GOP was universally understood to be the pro-torture party, and any noises he made to the contrary while still being one of their leaders were meaningless.

Neither here nor there, but John’s line “I used to go to Yahoo news just to see what Trump voters thought” is hilariously Proustian

When I saw that video of Steven Miller, I was kind of surprised to realize he was in high school in 2003. Then I remembered that Reinhard Heydrich was 38 when he died, because so much of fascist regimes are just mediocre young men who would be complete failures if they weren't rocketed to the top for their careerist willingness to be monsters.

Demonic domestic politics (aside from privacy), but he's usually right on foreign policy and not mealy-mouthed about it like the few progs critical of the empire (Tlaib excepted)

So is Andrew Breitbart. Steve Bannon lived in Santa Monica for many years and ran Breitbart News from a nondescript office building in Brentwood, where it might still be based.

Gah! I was trying to make the case for possums via my own transformation. Didn't like them when I was younger, but my wife opened my eyes.

Thomas Massie has distinguished himself as a decent politician with genuine principles, regarding Ukraine, Israel and Iran. Vastly preferable to MTG. Edit: I don't know Ro Khanna, but he seems like a non-crank, decent politician too.

wonderful movie, completely different animals: tanuki ("raccoon dogs") are vuplini (canidae), related to foxes and dogs, and raccoons are procyonids (arctoidea), related to skunks and badgers and closer to both seals and bears than to tanuki.

great news about the essay collection! edit: having a nice time imagining Mark cranking New Model Army's "Vengeance" on headphones while staring grimly into the back yard edit 2: that Stephen Miller clip makes my brain feel like a neutron star

I want to defend Miller’s classmates, but having met some of them, no. Fuck ‘em. But anyway, MAGA genuinely believes in the Epstein thing. They’re right for the wrong reasons (sadism, paternalistic misogyny, etc.) but they want these elites strung up by their balls. But there’s no chance Trump would ever do anything for the reason Biden wouldn’t have if he were cognizant for a moment. It implicates everyone through sex, money laundering, political influence, and business dealings in, oddly enough, the Democrats’ biggest bases until they saw he writing on the wall last year: Wall Street and Silicon Valley. At this point, everyone is tainted except space cadets like MTG and Massie and Ro (broken clock, etc) and the best anyone can hope for is what Tim Dillon said last week: Pick your pe**. But most of MAGA isn’t going to let this go. They will give up on Trump between this and him not going nuclear on immigrants. And we just end up in the same fucking perpetual shitstorm. But at least this time we are balls deep into a recession that will maybe end and rebound by the end of next year.

L
Lojban Chauvinist · July 18, 2025

Thomas Massie has distinguished himself as a decent politician with genuine principles. And he's not crazy. I'd at least put him one tier above MTG.
