Zine: The Way Things Went

To de-stress in the evenings sometimes I hang out and make zines/artbooks, maybe while watching Star Trek Voyager or something.

Last night I made this one, here it is! While having a conversation with M about why you can't just put coffee in a teabag instead of doing a pourover.

This video is unlisted and just for you. I do a lot of things I'm not especially interested in sharing with the public but here everyone is invested in my well-being, and I like that about you! I made sure to include a very inspirational dog who demonstrates the meaning of patience!

I always thought Voyager had the best theme music of the spinoffs. Glad they're showing it again.

It really does. Of course it also has the best EVERYTHING. I have so many opinions about Voyager. It is the best.

Cali is the most patient dog ever in the universe, she's amazing.

French press? Works great. Not bitter.

Don't get me started on espresso 😲

Is it just me or do you also see a person facepalming with both hands on the fourth orange pillar of the first page? Very appropriate cover art :)

hehehe I see it now. I like your constellation-like interpretation of pseudo-randomness into people and stories, one of my favourite aspects of abstract art :]

How do we buy prints?

V
Vi Hart · October 28, 2017

I should probably have merch of all sorts... just will take a bit to set up and figure out what works! I'm flattered that anyone would be interested in buying my art prints though, as it's not my most popular work... :D

There could be an issue with the permeability of wet coffee grounds to flowing water. It's possible that the pressure differentials produced by static bag-steeping are insufficient for proper extraction, so you'd wind up over-extracting the outside of the tea bag, and under-extracting the inside. This could probably be tested.

That sounds very sciencey! But if I swirl the teabag enough I can get pressure differentials and then I'm science too!

A lot of coffee science is Voodoo Napkin Math concocted by pseudoscientific experts who believe the secret to good coffee is the illusion of replic…ata…bility? replicability? provided by using precision tools and DARK RITUALS to create expensive, pain-in-the-ass cups of mediocre unpredictable coffee water. And I say this as someone drinking coffee made with a pour over like… ten minutes ago. I reject the notion that you couldn’t use a tea bag to make good coffee. It’s just full immersion, right? Fundamentally identical to someone using an Eva Solo except that the grounds steep in a flexible container. Essentially the same as a gentle French Pressing where the grounds fly up and out of the flask instead of being smooshed against the bottom. Provided you had a large enough tea bag, you could dump fresh grounds into the bag, set it at the bottom of a warmed up mug, pour 200-degree water over it, and slowly draw out the bag after 5 or 6 minutes. Longer than a typical French Press because there’s no agitation or pressing. Maybe longer! 8 minutes. MADNESS. The resulting liquor could then be swirled and tasted and if you made it behind a screen I would defy the Coffee Masters of the world to detect that something was amiss.

I think this is true for most coffee in the universe! I mean I'm sure there's some folks who do fancy things and spend time tasting and learning but most of us just want happy brain hug morning time

Easy solution: put the grounds and the water (not quite boiling) in a pyrex cup measure. Swirl them around. Pour them in the filter. Lots easier than pour-over, lots faster than steeping (which would be nasty).

I guess I don't understand why that's fundamentally different from a quick steep. Coffee so confusing and difficult and delicious
