IDSG Bonus 48: Citizen Vigilante, The Movie Review
In which Jack and I discuss the actual merits of the new Uwe Boll film Citizen Vigilante, in support of the mainline episode in which we talked about how racist right film enthusiasts (take that with a hefty grain of salt) discussed the film.
The short version: it's complete shit, so bad it can't even be watched ironically. And racist in ways that aren't even getting at the real issues most of the people championing seem to care about.
I've stolen the show notes section from Jack's post on the film. Go give him a follow as well if you can.

This movie reminds me of something like Camp of the Saints or The Turner Diaries in that it feels partly designed to alienate anyone who isn’t already a fascist. Like it wants to disgust regular people so fascists can feel a sense of group solidarity around feeling like they’re the only people who can stomach what they view as a hard truth.
Actually the plot of the movie makes perfect sense to me: 1) the fact that it's just a bunch of mismatched scenes makes perfect sense, since they know nothing about actual art and the movie only exists to shoe horn in a bunch of fascist talking points. 2) the main character being a psychopathic monster makes perfect sense considering the people who made this and who like it, are also psychopathic monsters. Also fascism always seeks to invert traditional morality to make doing evil become good as long as it's the right people doing it. Also side note: Hammer crying about how the movie turned out is completely fake - just another acting job. He read the script and knew exactly what his character was doing, and he knows the movie is shit. He wanted the money and just didn't expect the mainstream to become aware of it.
Did you ever review Boondock Saints? This description of the movie sounds a lot like the plot of Boondock Saints, except the target is the Mob.
I kinda wonder if the bit where he randomly runs people off the road is a bit Boll stole from Ronin, another way better action movie. Stellan Skarsgård’s character in that movie is about to murder a little girl (maybe 8-9 years old) and is only stopped at the last second by another guy, which is a way for Skarsgård’s character to demonstrate how much he hates the other guy. For a certain kind of shithead that kind of random murder could be a way of showing how tough the character is.
I saw Ronin theatrically back in the day. (Or maybe on DVD six months later? Memory is hard.) I haven't seen it since so I don't remember the details, but I'd love to revisit it, even without this as an impetus.
