40:14 it is very bizarre to us nowadays that all the, even progressive, stuff in media about trans people was "they used to be [assigned sex]. And you treating them as a lesser [gender] for that is prying into someone's past and being a dick about it. Don't we all have stuff that's kind of embrassing in our own pasts? As a Minnesotan, yes, a significant plurality of the state have Norwegian, Swedish or Finnish ancestors, usually 3 to 4 generations back, and a LOT of our small northern towns are still mostly full of people who can trace that ancestry on both sides. Dontchaknow.

I screamed "Fargo!" for two straight minutes when you announced it. Let's fucking go! SKOL VIKINGS SKOL! (The Minnesota Vikings are a North American gridiron football team, based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota). I'm only familiar with the TV series, so this is going to be a fun one.
Also, apropos of nothing, Nova might recognize the Minnesota Vikings as one of the two teams that Tom Clancy had nuked in The Sum of All Fears. IRL, the Vikings have been to four Super Bowls in a decade, and lost each time. One of the guys who inadvertently set off the bomb even lamented to his cohorts how much of a shame it was that he wouldn't be able to watch the game, in case the Vikings won. Fuck Tom Clancy. He had three good novels, and each one of them was riddled with his Reagan-pilled bullshit. Skol Vikes, and I guess Go Birds.
The comments about the mink coats are infinitely relatable-- especially knowing one of my father's great uncles used to be a furrier and trapper who went into the business of making his own coats. One day I surely will own one, bought second hand, because god forbid I learn how to skin a mink myself (they probably shed like snakes to be fair).
The scandi/Minnesota thing is SO REAL. In a department where I interned my mom told me there was one guy from Minnesota and one guy from Sweden but didn't point out which was which so I got them backwards for MONTHS

I remember being nine and picking this movie out at the video store because it was supposed to have the Pink Panther in it. And my parents are like Well if you really want to it's your movie choice. And I was so very very disappointed.

Kurt Jennings is one of my favorite actors. I used to borrow VHS from my grandparents house and one of my favorites is "The Enemy Below" where Kurt plays a German uboat Captain. Very good and inspired an episode of star trek.

On the topic of weird gender stuff done in school, in secondary school, I would colour in my thumb with pen and then press that against my nails to colour them. I’m pretty sure i got in trouble for this but I argued that it technically was not nail polish- which probably didn’t work. Additionally, Tom Cruise does a reversible coat thing in the 4th Mission Impossible to go from a Russian general’s uniform to some yank tourist jacket. Now idrk if Ethan Hunt is transgender but he’s certainly not a detective so I think that falls outside this podcast’s remit.

I've expierenced the blue acorn effect while cycling in winter. Shrinkage can go surprisingly far. Gave me a bit of a glimpse at what my life would have been like if I hadn't been circumsized as a child. I did not dip it in whiskey, but simply took a warm shower.
