[BONUS] Episode O - Insomnia (1997)

It's Scandi Week on Be Gay Solve Crimes, and so we're catching a red-eye flight above the Arctic circle to the city that never sleeps (Norwegian), just in time to check out a dazzlingly depressing work of sunlit Scandinavian noir, a film so Norse they made it tworce, it’s Insomnia (1997) starring Stellan Scarsgård!

Join us as Nova subtly tries to get Lucy to transform her into a musical jingle, Lucy more than happily obliges, and Mia dusts off the Swedish accent once again for us all.

Be Gay Solve Crimes are on Bluesky, where you can also find each of the team: November Kelly, Mia Mulder, and your local librarian Lucy, who writes all the music for the show.

Join us next time for The Pink Panther!

This is a very funny episode to listen to after the Fargo one in the beginning of October in Minnesota. My wife is experiencing the daylight change craziness and I'm too ADHD to notice. Also if you ever want to do a live podcast at a museum I strongly rec the Swedish American museum in Minneapolis. It think it would be very funny.

I'm most of the way through this one, and I haven't heard one reference to 'Immigrant Song' by Led Zeppelin. Now, granted, that song was meant to describe Iceland. Led Zeppelin's existence was owed to a cancellation of The Yardbirds' previous tour, which involved Scandii. But it was right there, girls! What is Iceland, if not the Isle of Man of Scandinavia......oh shit, that's why lol. Addendum: It's disturbing how easily Mia can switch her accents. But I understand. I have that same ability. I'm from northeastern Ohio, and specifically from Wayne County. We, for some reason, have the most neutral accents in America. It's part of the reason why the Midwest of America, and Ohio in general, get so much shit talked about us. It's because we produce the best voice actors, and they all leave Ohio and make it big in LA or New York. Does that mean that Ohio is the Sweden of the Midwest? Is Pennsylvania spiritually Finnish? Is Minnesota the true id of the Midwest? Michigan is certainly Denmark. Illinois is just England. Iowa is the occupied North of Ireland, and Kentucky is...IDK, Czechia? Am I drunk? Yes

Cheering, skipping, shouting with joy over mention of future episode The Fall - the movie that made me see what Movie Guys do in Cinema

"Abso-fucken'-Lucy" the co-hosts did not give this the respect it was due. Never surrender to the pun-haters, if they don't react it just means you need to hit another one.

this is more because it’s the billionth time they’ve heard me say it lmao

I had a good friend who was a bartender in the States, then moved to Utrecht to go to the university there (I don't know how she arrived at that decision.) She has consistently said that being a bartender made understanding spoken Dutch surprisingly easy, because drunk American English and Dutch sound essentially identical.

I love fiction that appreciates the devastating effect of sleep deprivation. It's pure torture, and deployed as such. It will kill you outright in a scarily short time or it will get you killed in any number of ways. An environment that won't let you sleep for whatever reason is existentially hostile in a way people just don't have the tools to really handle. Fascinating place/state of being to set a movie.

After some thinking, I kinda wish Insomnia remake had a female lead with a female partner, but keep Robin Williams because of course. The original film sounds really good and infinitely better, even though I like the remake a lot haha.

on the subject of norwegian/swedish and whether there’s an equivalent language relationship for english: what about scots? i have very little exposure to it outside of poetry but i would hazard a guess that it’s pretty intelligible to english speakers without prior exposure

I hate it when I get regular style murdered and instead of trying to solve my case, the detective shoots his own partner, spends all his time trying to cover it up, and goes crazy.

I like the sound of Nova here, she sounds like a dear friend chatting on the telephone. Feels more sincere and friendly in a way.

I'm from a more southerly part of Alaska but have lived in the white nights part for large chunks of my life. I never had a problem with the dark but it took me years to get used to the light.

Nova's hubris about the Internet quality while literally descending into a hell of The Wrong Audio Device is a glorious low stakes horror short.

M
Meekle Tubas · September 23, 2026

Going from EditingLucy explaining how November’s audio recording got messed up by her temporary recording setup, into the opening theme and then right into November excitedly saying how much better her current temporary setup is, creates a degree of dramatic irony I would not have thought possible in a non fiction podcast format.

These sorts of films are basically all that I want from a podcast like this, which is why it’s a shame that you were so harsh on Dragon Tattoo

I went to Fairbanks, Alaska for two weeks midsummer many years ago and near lost my mind completely because I couldn't sleep (even with blackout curtains) the entire time. My body somehow knew the sun was up even if I tried to fool it. Also, the mosquito situation is...um, let's say, Jurassic

D
Deb · September 23, 2026

The midnight sun is something I've always been kinda intrigued about experiencing - like, it might be cool just once to be out on an empty street at 2 a.m. with golden-hour sunlight. But then, I have a track record of going into things that *sound* whimsical but turn out to be deeply brain-breaking, so it's probably not for me. (Shout-out to the House on the Rock in Wisconsin, if you ever want to dissociate in a big room crammed with pipe organs and distillery equipment.)

The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, But the queerest they ever did see Was the design i had in embroidery drawd to make an ahegao shrowd in which I cremated Sam McGee.

Best time I ever had in the comments section of the newspaper was in Fairbanks Alaska during a cold snap that wouldn't give up and we all started quoting Sam McGee to each other

I am Norwegian, I lived most of my youth above the arctic circle, and I completely support Mia's right to talk shit about us all she wants. I was relatively acclimated to the midnight sun, though I have learned to love sleep masks and blackout curtains. What weirds me out more is the fact that it is never warm and dark at the same time, as in Norway dark = winter = cold. So when I go on vacations abroad my entire brain spins in knots trying to understand that you can go out on the town after the sun goes down in nice clothes that isn't a heavy winter coat.

E
Ember Puppytoys Aegle · September 23, 2026

Re the pig expression: Yes, that sounds basically the same in Norwegian.

Saw the remake first, but loved both versions of this movie (didn't see the original until recently). The remake was part of my inspiration for running a mystery/horror New World of Darkness campaign (that was more based on Twin Peaks and the Cthulhu Mythos, but Insomnia was there too).

Coming off a night of barely any sleep, this feels appropriate, and The Girls™️ Talking About Movies is what I needed in my morning. Thanks!
