Rocky Horror Picture Show has its problems, but consider-- what other cinema do we have about an aging gay femme who keeps stealing other people's boyfriends, grooms a perfect twink, and then spins out of control at an embarassingly public dinner party?
*does a drag-number with a cunt-track of lines from Clue where the hook is "where, is, the Body?"*
Unfortunately Rocky Horror traumatised me as a child in ways that are largely unrelated to either my or its queerness. Picture the scene- it’s 2007, I am 12 going on 13 and for some reason at multiple sleepovers I’ve recently attended we’ve watched the Time Warp part of the movie and done the dance. ‘Hmm’, I say to myself, ‘Rocky Horror is a Cool Thing. It would probably be cool and impressive if I had a Rocky Horror themed birthday party’. Crucially I have not seen the rest of the movie. I steam ahead regardless. I get everyone to dress up in what a bunch of middle-class tweens in 2007 think is ‘Rocky Horror style’. I make a cake covered with black fondant with big cut out red fondant lips. My parents hire two local sixth formers to do people’s makeup in ‘Rocky Horror style’. (I don’t think either my parents or the sixth formers knew what that was either.) We put on the movie. It gets to the Time Warp. Everyone joins in the dance. Then the rest of the movie proceeds, which from the perspective of an easily embarrassed freshly 13 year old might as well be Salò or Last Tango in Paris. My parents and nine-year-old sister are in the room along with a number of girls from school I am desperate to impress and also the two sixth formers who in my eyes are avatars of sophistication and coolness, now bearing witness to my catastrophic misjudgement. I remain frozen in mortified horror for an unknown period of time until eventually I got my parents to shut the movie off. It’s been nearly twenty years and I still can’t think about that birthday party without full-body clenching.
thank you for your sacrifice because this is hilarious
Speaking of the costumes not matching the characters names, when Miss Scarlett first appeared wearing a peacock-coloured outfit with a big collar that looked like a fucking peacock I spent the next ten minutes convinced it was going to be the setup to a fake-out joke.
I’m reading Tim Curry’s memoir right now, and while he freely admits to doing a lot of cocaine in the late 70s and early 80s (especially during his music career), he suggests he’d given jt up several years before “Clue.” So all that running around and yelling excitedly is just pure, uncut Curry. I wrote a piece online about this, but I have fond memories of watching RHPS a LOT as a teenager and twentysomething. You can take good things away from it (including the community) and TC gives a fantastic performance, but it’s very much of its time and it’s no substitute for having an openly accepting environment and education about gender identity and sexuality.
If you pay attention to the editing during the blackout of where certain characters are shown to be and what they’re doing while the killer’s switched off the power, along with where they come from once Wadsworth turns it back on, then only one ending is possible because characters would have to teleport like Jason Voorhees for the other two to work. The Yvette/Miss Scarlett ending is the only one that works.
On the subject of Clue lore, my elementary school library had a series of Clue-brand mystery books that I absolutely loved. They had the same basic formula as Encylcopedia Brown, where each book contained a series of short stories where the signature Clue characters stumbled into minor mysteries that you could solve through carefully reading the text. The last story of every book focused on solving Mr. Boddy's murder, and you had to go on to the next book to find the solution, as well as the inevitable explanation of how Boddy hadn't actually *died*. The various characters all had their own personalities, albeit rather broadly. I remember, for example, that Colonel Mustard was fond of painting bullseyes around his bullet holes on the shooting range, or using scissors to solve a jigsaw puzzle. Assuming I haven't just hallucinated all this, I'm curious as to whether anyone else ever read these books as a child, or knows anything about them. It would have been somewhere between 95 and 97 that I read them, though they could have been published practically any time before that.
They should do a remake of the Departed (which you should also do an episode of) but it's Leonardo DiCaprio pretending to be gay so he can be blackmailed and lure the criminal out
I watched this recently and sat up during the credits saying, Jane Wiedlin was the singing telegram girl?? So I'm sharing that now for anyone who missed it.
I wanna suggest Akira Kurosawa's 1963 film "High and Low" for this show where we see a non-samurai Toshiro Mifune play a powerful 1960s businessman whose son is kidnapped and has themes around class divide and capitalism
Tim Curry was fearless, he was in one of my favourite telemovies of time, which was one of the Lexx prequels… the worlds horniest sci-fi show.
I thought the pun was based on ludo, the Latin word for the verb to play, and clue, the thing that detectives find with their magnifying glasses. I hadn't heard of Ludo. My reaction to Yvette's introduction was similar to the pod's, with the exception that it's fine when women do it so they didn't get the instant shame that I did, especially since I watched this to remember Tim Curry before BGSC said they'd do an episode on Cluedo: the Board Game: the Movie (to use the SF: TG: TM: TG fan naming convention) and I didn't want to ruin my queer celebrity mourning with some dastardly het thoughts, lol. On Skype, Brendan the Start-Again did an amusing skit about the CEO of Skype being miffed about how the pandemic went. Lucy saying she used to play solo Cluedo was like a Ghibli movie where a toddler packs a piece of cheese and a colouring book in a backpack to run away from home only to go on a supernatural adventure in terms of how heartbreakingly endearing that statement was. Got me crying in the supermarket, lol.
CNA, just a week away?
the first time I watched rhps was while I was still closeted in a room full of cis people and it made me feel just so unsafe. like this was what they would think of me if I came out. it's also just not that good. as far as movies with caricatures of trans women go I had an at least more engaged time with silece of the lambs (though it probably helped seeing that one alone)
I have it on good authority that most Google employees use iPhones instead of Pixel. Bc even they can't be bothered to put up the pretense
On the rhps, it is a fundamentally bad movie with horrible boring songs that is incredibly trans misogynistic that is in no way saved by tim currys performance as he is playing a trans misogynistic sterotype rapist, it does not need to be held up as some sort of avant garde elder queer cinema seeing as it unquestionably did harm to trans women who were alive at the
this is such a theatre kid movie <_< >_> I SEE YOOOOOOOU
This is a pantomime, yeah ya Alboners get that in Pantos and violent marionettes, and commies of arties (more a cuntynental thing) but in america this is what we have so neomondains are more fond of this than ordinate also... do... he has no wife. He's fucking the poolboy while his "wife" watches
fun fact about the guys who made Skype: They were some Estonian hackers who made the DOS game Skyroads, the framework that built the p2p network Kazaa, and they already made their money selling Skype to Microsoft, so they're not bothered.
Oh, wow, I played Skyroads!
What do the girls mean fandom was not yet a thing? KIRK SPOCKS date to the 60s and fandom perverts hounded Art Condy over continuity!
The lavender scare is very much an unforced error; if you dont make being gay a crime it isnt an issue they can be extorted with!
Yes Americans have Hoovers, we use them to do the vacuuming
Another interesting film with Madeline Kahn (Mrs White) to cover would be The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother! It's a bit of a Young Frankenstein reunion, complete with a Mel Brooks vocal cameo. I'm not going to say it's *good*, but it's got some very memorable scenes.
The Mystery of Edwin Drood is the musical with multiple endings. It’s hellish to do. I was on tech for it and we had tags all over in our script and different cues that had to be jumped to depending on which ending happened. We did not rig the vote, so it was actually a race to tally the votes during the first scene of act 2 then let the crew and cast know who was the selected murderer. The audience didn’t know which ending actually won until it happened.
That was one of the craziest productions I’ve ever done. It also just so happened that stacking day job with night and weekends job meant I worked 42 days in a row with a week of them being 18-20 hour days.
Lucy that "Why do you think they call him Hoover?" joke was completely unacceptable.
Temu Sigourney Weaver as Ms. Scarlet was also not *awful*. She understood the assignment.
Going to suggest DEATHTRAP if you want this kind of 70s-80s murder mystery vibes
My boyfriend and I saw the stage play first and can confirm it works so much better as a play. The lighting and design in the production we saw for the Scooby doo chase scene was so good and made it so much more entertaining than the same sequence in the movie.
I'm so sorry but to say this movie is carried by Curry's performance is WILD. Sure he's fantastic and probably the most memorable part of the film but you're totally discounting just how phenomenal this cast is. The male leads are great (sans Lee Ving) but Colleen Camp, Leslie Ann Warren, Eileen Brennan, and especially Madeline fucking Kahn deserve way more credit here.
Yeah, them saying that made me so mad, the feeling it, flames, flames on the side of my face, heaving, breaths... breathing... (I'm kidding I had fun anyway.)
The thing I ADORE about Daniel Craig is that during his stage career he was in the UK Original Cast of Angels in America where he played the closeted gay Morman guy, and at least acording to Jason Isacs who played Louis he and Daniel were naked on stage and fucking each other during the play.
i didnt know who tim curry was til he died... too young i guess
"Still in the repression which lasted an INTOLERABLE 18 months" Bruh, try 18 years. X_X
Had a bet with myself re: whether the Rocky Horror Discourse was going to get a mention here - I had November bringing it up quickly to dismiss it, so her absence here leaves me with an unsolvable case
I literally paused the episode nearly an hour in to make this comment, pressed play and was instantly made a fool
Skirt go spinny AND femboy hooters origin stories?? Now that's an actual surprise twist in this podcast.
"It was rice" "I thought it was Cluedo" "But it wasn't, it was rice"
As the pivotal detective this episode, A) I hope I'm serving, because I sure as hell am stepping past the bodies I'm meant to be protecting as I instead look to uncover B) What the hell will our next episode be?
And yes, was about to default to Czerdenko from Red Alert 3, but I'd give a shout to his beautiful work as Emperor Doviculus from 2009's Brütal Legend
Mr Green? Is Mr Green not the detective?
My egg cracked in 2010 and even back then rocky horror was like , the only piece of queer rep you could find of queer people having some measure of a good time at all
Comedy Central played this movie on a loop in the 90s and I think that did a lot to elevate the movie to cult status. They showed the version with all three endings, and the hosts are right—seeing just one would have felt disappointing/annoying. ❤️ To Tim Curry and to Madeline Kahn, a Jewish comedy queen. And now I’m realizing how much Gender I got from her when I was younger. Future Halloween costume?
Sondheim and Perkins were probably approached for this because they had previously written a murder mystery, The Last of Sheila, which you absolutely should watch.
Taken out at the knees by that professor plum joke x_x
My most vivid Tim Curry connection is Cardinal Richelieu from The Three musketeers this rewatch is the first time I noticed that the cook is watching McCarthy hearings on TV I hate to say this, and this isn't the place to say it, but unfortunately Rowan Atkinson and John Cleese would have both done a very good job as the butler. Would have been a different character though
The Trans Girl Oracle fucking sniping me once again with the Professor Plum line what the actual fuck
Madeline Kahn rightfully gets a lot of love for the "Flames on the side of my face" bit, but I feel like people kinda sleep on Eileen Brennan as Mrs. Peacock. Over the past 10 years or so, I haven't been able to hear a piece of terrible news without Brennan's delivery of "You mean . . . Oh mY GoD, oF CouRsE" squawking in my head.
I'm obsessed with her delivery of "I am de-TER-mined to enjoy myself"
Regarding the French Maid jiggle physics, pretty sure that's naturall assets combined with a water bra. Girl I dated in college did that with her french maid outfit. (Cue À la Recherche du Temps Perdu theme music.) From what I've heard Humphrey Bogat was a stand up guy. When Lena Horne moved into his neighborhood and some people got together a petition to kick her out cause she was black, Bogart not only refused to sign, but told the guy asking him that if anything bad happened to Ms. Horne he would beat the shit out of that guy in particular, regardless of if he was involved. This may be apocryphal. Do we have Hoover in the USA? Ohio based appliance manufacturer Hoover? How dare you colonizers appropriate our vacuum culture. America invented sucking that hard.
I can explain the Hoover thing a little better: it's a brand taking over a concept. If Brits wanted to copy a piece of paper, we'd call it a photo copy, and never call it a Xerox. Likewise in the UK we'd call a vacuum a Hoover regardless of whatever brand the vacuum is, to the point of referring to its usage as "hoovering"
NOVEMBER INVENTED FEMBOY HOOTERS?!
Brewdog pubs?
*finishing listening to the episode and turning to a nonexistent audience* "time to go fuck my wife"
A key component of the Skype bag fumble is that Microsoft did it. They kept shoving bullshit in there that nobody wanted, and then the professionals left for Slack, the gamers left for Discord, and the podcasters left for Zencaster. This had already happened in 2016 or so.
And now at my work we are mandated to use Teams and only Teams. Which really sucks.
I'm researching sort of Blake's 7 Firefly type sci-fi while I work on my own project in that sort of area and I thought I'd rewatch Lexx because Tim Curry had a guest spot on the second episode. I think it's the only example I've ever seen of him phoning it in.
Also, I think it's really funny that the *cop* of all people is like, "oh yeah, this couple is interracial and that's definitely illegal at this time period, but that's fine cause like, who are you, some sorta cop??"
All of you really need to listen to "worlds beyond number - clue" multi episode roleplaying Cluedo
Mr. Green is played by Michael McKean, aka Chuck from Better Call Saul. Also, Mrs. Peacock was supposed to be played by Carrie Fisher, but she had to go to rehab. And also, Madeline Kahn. The GOAT.
we were ROBBED 😭
It's funny I watched this movie for the first time and then immediately afterwards we played cluedo
I wish I could say I immediately thought of Legend when Tim Curry was mentioned, but no, I also thought of Red Alert 3.
Do I protect: considering I tend to take 50 to 60% casualties in any tactical game I play, no. Do I serve: I wear cargo pants, so also no.
Oh my god, Clue the Musical by Stephen Sondheim would have been fucking incredible.
SPASE!!!
This better cure my wisdom teeth pain
oh nooo :c like, getting them out or are they hurting? cause I've had both of those :(
Holy shit, didn't realise Tim Curry was the narrator of the aSoUE tie-in game. I played that game to death, don't think it was very good.
I think he did some of the audiobooks for the series, too.
That is a strangely profound image for such a goofy scene. The lighting is impeccable.
AN ANGEL!!! (Bert)
My body is ready
...Lucy how did you manage to mispronounce Rowan Atkinson's name when you both share a name 😂
