You asked one question: Are the Be Gay Solve Crimes girlies ever going to cover a Coen brothers film?

And after all this time, we finally answered. Oh yah. You betcha.

Join us as Nova debates the best kind of walkie talkie sound effect, Mia gets very passionate about office feng shui, and Lucy completely butchers the pronunciation of Peter Stormare.

When Y'all get to Episode 'Z' you must continue with Æ, Ø, and Å, it is the only correct way to proceed. I will not be taking questions on this matter.

Getting my hopes up for episodes about True Detective, cause I'd bet good money there's reppers out there that wish they'd be Rust Cohle

I don't like that there's only 30 episodes of this podcast, and not 300. I'm almost a second listen on every one of them. Do better.

Random thought regarding doing The Wire, it could be worth doing it either detective by detective or case by case, rather than eating the entire feast, or even doing season by season. So the girls in the container, the bodies in the vacants, the string of murders Weebay eats in season one, the homeless killings, Clay Davis's fuckery. I mean you would still need to watch the entire thing multiple times, which we should all be doing anyway, but it does give you a little more focus that you'd get trying to fit a whole season into an episode. That being said, for a show with a recurring theme of 'All the pieces matter' you might just have to dig in a whole season of episodes about it.

My sister makes mystery of the week television if you want some modern Columbo. My Life Is Murder with Lucy Lawless and Darby and Joan with Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi. There I've done my brotherly duty.

I think the different ways they two kidnappers have sex is an indicator of their character. I feel weird saying it but it's on the screen which means it's intentional and therefore thematic.

The first season kinda sucks, 2 is pretty good, 3 is a little convoluted, 4 is meh, and the least season....kino.

"you know how most men are under the impression that they could score a point against Serena Williams" Nope! That's the opposite of what the poll said. The poll said that 7/8 men said they would not be able to. There's a lot of ridiculous male audacity polls out there about fighting bears or landing planes (or winning against women in MMA) I'm sure, but that one non-example is the one that gets repeated all the time

H
Hovis · October 8, 2026

I don't even think it's a wild claim to make, assuming you count double faults and unforced errors. Am I ever hitting anything back over the net that she sends? No. Is she potentially missing just one shot over the course of a match? I could see that as a distinct possibility. It's a bit of a downer to find yourself stood alongside the worst chuds in the entire world just because you've looked at 'unforced error' stats in tennis and like the odds.

Minnesota Nice is very different than how you all described. It's not about politeness above kindness or as a veneer for malice or indifference. The Rules of Politeness are somewhat inscrutable because a large part of it is saving face. William H Macy proves this immediately when he apologizes for being late to plan the kidnapping. He's not sorry, he's giving his accomplices the opportunity to apologize back. Which they deny -violating the Rules and humiliating him further. It also makes his father in law's comments extra cutting. He does not give a fuck about preserving his son in law's dignity. William H Macy is extremely nice, hes performing all of the rituals without any of the understanding. Which is embarrassing for everyone to witness but knowing the Minnesota Nice Rules... its unbearable.

The Hautman Brothers who beat Norm for the more prestigious duck stamp are three real life artist brothers whose ducks have been awarded stamps pretty much every year since the 90s. They are THE people to beat in competitive duck portraiture

J
Johnny · October 8, 2026

wait i LOVE THIS. so basically that last scene is norm expressing a genuine and significant ambition (beat the Brothers Duck Stamp) and being sad that he failed this time, and then him and his wife co-processing and reorienting his focus towards what he DID achieve. he’s not a good man bc he doesn’t have ambition, he’s a good man bc he has a healthy relationship with his ambition :)

Funny story, in Wisconsin cops will just take money for a fine on the side of the road, rather than make you go to the station. This is why a lot of Minnesotans think they are being asked to bribe a cop in Wisconsin.

J
John Jenkins · October 7, 2026

I don't know if this has been suggested and it's probably a bonus episode material but season 1 of The Expanse has a lot of themes that the ladies would be able to dig into and it would be very interesting IMO to hear that.

E
Em Sz · October 7, 2026

Oh yeah, and the Bears are from Chicago. There aren't any Bears fans in greater MN or even the Cities because they're all too busy caring about either the Vikings or the Packers. It's a different accent too SMH. I know it's a famous SNL skit but come on

D
Deb · October 8, 2026

I might be misremembering, but I thought "Go Bears" was a reference to one of the sex workers saying she went to high school in White Bear Lake? Their school mascot is a bear.

As a Minnesotan, when Nova said this word sounds funny in a Minnesotan accent, I paused the podcast and said it out loud. Yesterday I was on the phone with a client from up north who said "son of a Richard" and "aw fer craziness" along with the regular "oh ya" and "aw jeez" that are just white noise. It's a lovely place to live. Last January I got a flat and two different neighbors came out to help me change the tire on the coldest week of the year (-20 F). I made them hot cocoa. They returned the mugs the next day with treats and a thank you note. This was deep into the ICE invasion so we were all trying to keep an eye out for our neighbors

(A) Holy shit, I used to work at an Embers in Minneapolis. (B) If you're lookin' for a tall fella with big Golden Retriever energy, they (we) are thick on the ground in Minnesota and Wisconsin. Go find you a Norm. (C) The internet has smoothed it out, but *at that time,* the accent was very real. The actors exaggerate, but not by much. (D) Minnesota Nice is a real thing but it's deeply understood. Minneapolitains standing up to ICE, putting our lives right on the line, is Minnesota Nice. Sometimes hope looks a hell of a lot like spite.

In an interview, Buscemi said when he read the script he went to the Coens and pitched ideas for prosthetics or different expressions or makeup or things he could do to achieve the "funny lookingness" that they were talking about. He said they just kind of looked at each other and hesitated and then he said "oh I see"

This is one of my favorite films. I love that instead of American exceptionalism, Fargo offers American modesty, decency and competence, all in a heavily pregnant woman detective with a great wife guy husband. And, fascinatingly (since I'm afab, indifferently ace, infertile and happy about it, and agender) Marge is one of the very very few presentations of femininity I have ever connected with. Unless we count an early obsession with Holmes, which perhaps we should The film's thesis is just so diametrically opposed to most of American culture. As someone with negative amounts of ambition, I have always felt keenly the chafing against the expectation that as an American I would naturally have big dreams, plans and aspirations, but I am more constitutionally well-suited to a three cent stamp kind of life. Maybe due to anxiety, maybe due to neurodivergence, maybe being terrified at the very real possibility of doing harm to others due to the system requiring that of me or due to my own foibles or ignorance. I am painfully aware of my shortcomings and so never wished to extend their blast radius The so-called rewards for striving also felt like more of a curse to me. I have a real horror of fame, experiencing the attention/envy/emnity of others, the loneliness of success, being a hungry ghost never fulfilled, etc. I would much rather be one of the crew than the head of anything. This is so anti-American to most people I have felt their disapprobation and disapproval about this quirk of mine my entire life. But I think this movie gets me, at least, and for that I'm grateful. It's kind of weird thing but my grandmother on my mom's side is from Wisconsin Dells and has the accent. Even not being around her much it's the only accent I can produce perfectly on demand, despite never having been there. I don't think I got this ability from her, though, it was most likely from being obsessed with mST3K during my formative years, and my parents listening to Garrison Keillor on NPR a lot growing up. I don't buy into heritage bs, but I do feel spiritually connected to these people

Swinging of scandi minnesota, there is a kettlebell club/podcast called Twin Cities Kettlebell Club/The Platform Podcast. I discovered them because I got into kettlebells and saw that a bunch of their font was Norse rune looking typeface and I thought oh no and then I listened to the first episode of their podcast and they interviewed the grandson of a Black CPUSA member and talked about George Floyd and Black Lives Matter and the importance of Covid precautions to protect community. Hell yeah, okay. In the kettlebell world, right-libertarian primitivist conspiracy theorist antivaxxer is the norm.

Love this movie. William H. Macy's insistence of playing Jerry Lundegaard is slightly less disturbing than Dennis Hopper being insistent that he must play Frank Booth in Blue Velvet. Edit: oh, for case of the week show (with some over arching plot that can be ignored) Poker Face.

Slightly a tangent, but one of the things that always weighs on me is knowing that towing a car from the Twin Cities area to Fargo is basically an all-day trip. Despite having all that time alone w/ the thoughts of his incredibly stupid plan, Jerry *still* goes through with it.

Before I got promoted to sales, I was a lumber yard "supervisor" who carried a bunch of keys on an industrial grade carabiner clipped to my belt loop, a walky talky, a folding pocket knife with its own leather pouch, a pair of aviation snips with its own holster, and a 25' Stanley Fat Max tape measurer with its own holster. I carried all these things on me because I would otherwise have to track down communal tools that are spread across different forklifts or cabinets across the yards and warehouses. Because I have Hank Hill syndrome, (diminished glutes), I had to start wearing suspenders under my shirts just to hold up all the shit that would otherwise weigh down my shorts/jeans (depending on the season), and expose my plumber's crack to the world. The truth is, you really don't want a job with a walkie talkie because it just becomes a platform for other people to harass you, and you don't want to be the guy with "the keys" because you become, by default, the person who gets the things that are in locked rooms for everyone else. You have all the responsibility and very few perks.

N
NowhereMan661 · October 7, 2026

Legit the first time I watched this movie it made me start talking with the accent. Like some kind of subliminal hypnosis, I was being turned into a Minnesotan.

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · October 7, 2026

It is; it was not just by redirecting their bloodlust towards the fins and rus that Saint Eric crafted the Swedes out of the various pagan warriors he was king over. A clever use of rhetoric modulations, an accent. This was then exacerbated in the USA, as many things are, by the wyrd song of the great lakes.
