[BONUS] Episode K - Eddie Valiant from Who Framed Roger Rabbit, featuring Devon!

On this extra special bonus episode of Be Gay Solve Crimes, we're joined by our dear friend Devon of Kill James Bond to talk about one of the most transgender detective films of all time, a movie we've been itching to do ever since we started this podcast, it's the hybrid cartoon film noir classic, Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988).

Join us as Nova activates theologian mode to explore the implications of the verifiably real Cartoon Soul, Mia activates historian mode to work out just how much critical support we can give Goofy for his espionage allegations, Devon activates cartography mode to navigate uncharted jungle of Bob Hoskin's chest hair, and Lucy accidentally derails the entire podcast by sending a NSFW picture to the group chat mid-recording.

Be Gay Solve Crimes are on Bluesky, where you can also find each of the team: November Kelly, Mia Mulder, and your local librarian Lucy, who writes all the music for the show.

Join us next time for Touch of Evil!

While it’s not the same class (what is?) I think the movie of Chip n’ Dale might suit. It has a detective element and covers cartoons from the early eras to the 2000s co-existing with humans

I was just thinking while watching this film that you needed Devon on to appreciate how hot Bob Hoskins is in this movie

The kind of movie to make you think about how racialized American cartoons are in general. The whole white gloves thing is a holdover from minstrel comedy.

I also hadn't seen this movie before, and watched it in anticipation of this episode. Roger Rabbit feels like the equal and opposite of Leslie Nielson in nearly every single conceivable way, lol. A liked how the frame rate drops to filming on 2s whenever they were in a toon area. I know that's so the live action people line up with the animation, but it also makes the world feel like animationness is sort of contagious, lol. Personally I like the internet fan canon that the Rabbits are an ace couple. "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way." And she literally plays pattycake with the cartoon chaser? It just feels right that they're ace, IMO. Eddie Valiant is the kind of guy to say "I am racist, but..." The thing about only having seen this movie /after/ learning a little bit about the history of animation, racialising all the toons makes you think a while lot about why they all have those specific gloves... The bit about do destroying your soul reminds me of Buu in DBZ, because death was more of a timeout in that show due to the Dragon Balls, so when Buu went to the street life to kill everyone in heaven that fucked me up.

Stormsdream · August 1, 2026

About the gloves, ugh, yeah, if you never want to know, do not watch the really old Fleisher Betty Boop or Warner Brothers' Bosco cartoons. When you are aware of the sources, they're downright painful to watch. In fact, google "Warner Brothers Bosco" at your own risk. Just remember the times were very different

Fun fact about Acme: it’s not one company. Per Chuck Jones’ memoir, Chuck Amuck, companies in the 1940s-50s had to have actual words in their names if they wanted to be listed in the phone book. If you sold hang-gliders or Batman outfits or whatnot, you couldn’t call yourself AAA Hang-gliders. The first word you were allowed to use was Acme. The gag was that the coyote was simply picking the first listing in the phone book for anything and everything he ordered. If he wanted a hang-glider, explosives, or whatever, he flipped to the explosives section of the book, for example, and the first listing always started with Acme. And, of course, companies that stick Acme at the top of their name, so they’ll be listed first, tend to have inferior products, which is why the things he ordered always exploded or otherwise failed in spectacular fashion. It’s even period-appropriate for Marvin Acme to call his novelty joke shop the Acme Corporation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He probably changed his name to Acme, just like Nathan Huffheinz changed his name to Nathan Arizona because nobody would buy unpainted furniture from Unpainted Huffheinz. In fact, the first couple of Road Runner cartoons had the coyote using things from different companies. It wasn’t always Acme this or that. Everything coming from an “Acme” store was one of the rules Jones developed after his one-and-done “chase satire” cartoon became a hit. Chuck Jones really hated Tom & Jerry style chase cartoons.

M
Marley Jay · August 1, 2026

You used to see a lot of companies with names like “A1 Locksmith” and “A+ Auto Repair” so they could also be first in the yellow pages. I suppose it was the SEO of its day. I never thought about the implication that the coyote is just ordering from the first company he sees in the phone book. I thought he got the catalog- and that he was fooled by the name Acme, which means “the high point” or “perfection.”

Ineloquent Reverie · July 24, 2026

Honestly, considering the racially charged history of cartoons back in the 30s and 40s, it is very interesting to try and explicitly do “toons are black”. Like, they meant that back then too, but in an EXTREMELY malicious way.

You got Legacies which serve as the archetype that constrains your character, you got Metamorphosis to put the pig's head on a dude, you got a canonical substance that erases souls in the form of Cold Iron which can be substituted pretty easily into the Dip.

Teenage me saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit first-run multiple times in the theater on the biggest screen at Century 22, which was across the street from the Winchester Mystery House. They shared a parking lot. My memory refuses to tell me if I saw WFRR opening day. Two scenes would get spontaneous applause: 1) Roger flipping through the patty cake pictures, and 2) the "you do/you don't" want a drink exchange. Best part, especially with the patty cake pictures scene, was feeling the audience realize what was happening and break into applause.

Just sitting down to watch it again. I love how tooney the real people are. There are folk that that look like they have stepped straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting and Eddie’s ex is clearly referencing pop art style in her micro polka dot dress

T
Thomas Anderson · July 22, 2026

So this probably came up in research and got cut but this movie was based very VERY loosely on a 1981 novel named Who Censored Roger Rabbit? by Gary K. Wolf, which is almost nothing like the movie and is well worth the read. Roger is a comic strip character who speaks in speech bubbles! It's neat!

S
Stormsdream · July 23, 2026

Apropos of absolutely nothing, it is exceptionally rare for a pair of handcuffs to have unique keys. Most of them just have a single post that you can knock with a toothpick, hairpin, or paperclip. There’s usually a circular gap with a metal post sticking up in the middle, and a notch for the handcuff key. Slide your implement into the notch, and work it around the metal post. On the opposite side of the notch is where you’ll usually find the clicky thing. Push it and the handcuff should unlock. Just in case.

I don't want to go on a rant about how Britain's rich systemically devastated the possibility of working class actors like Bob Hoskins ever appearing in the future. But. Um. Yeah. Honestly though what a fucking talent. Can't believe Chris Pratt got cast in his role in the Super Mario Brothers remake.

There's this unavoidable moment when you start doing critique on cartoons, exemplified here by Lucy when she says "there's a theory that Judge Doom is in fact Pistol Packin' Possum" and is met with a chorus of thoughtful assenting noises. It's important that when this happens you follow the rules of coyote time and don't look down - don't think about how silly you're being, because there -is- juice to be had here, there -is- something important about how a few lines on paper can touch hearts and minds. You just have to reconcile yourself to occasionally saying "what does Mr. Dinky's presence mean for the future of Creepy Route" or local equivalent

The first couple times I watched this I missed the moment at the beginning of the movie that establishes that he and his brother come from a clowning family, which is INCREDIBLY thematically important and also explains why he can improv a vaudeville act at the end of the movie In the mid-2010s I showed my wife the first five or 10 minutes of Looney tunes back in action and she frowned asked if we could turn it off. Like 10 years later she expressed interest in watching it because we had rewatched the Roger rabbit. Speaking of Wolf of Mungus, if you do a Fables episode you have to point out how extremely and explicitly right wing it is.

Hey mind your business, name's not important · July 22, 2026

Okay, I'm going to be that person. The short that is being filmed is stylistically more like an MGM Tom and Jerry cartoon, not a Loony Tune. When Eddie is speaking about LA having a great public transit system it's not an alt history joke. LA County had an extensive system of interurban trams in the form of the Red Car and the Blue Car which were two interurban tram companies. When my dad was kid he could ride a tram from Pasadena to Santa Monica. This would have been in the late 1930s to early 1940s. If you want more info on mass transit in LA there's an entire chapter on the rise and fall of it in the book "City of Quartz." Now back to you regularly scheduled programming.

S
Stormsdream · July 23, 2026

The film makers showed WFRR to Chuck Jones, and he hated it. He very publicly hated the movie, the short, and especially Roger Rabbit. He said Roger wasn't a character, had no personality, and the short had no story, so yes, it was a very, very Tex Avery MGM-period cartoon.

The thing that makes me unsure about the "Judge Doom is Pistol-Packin' Possum" theory is . . . the possum in the poster has the gun and the hat and the red eyes, but his big cartoon gloves are white or light-colored, I think? And Doom's terrifying shape-shifting animated hands are yellow. The yellow paint is even part of the evidence in the Roger frame-up.

Actually if you change the naming scheme to use the letters independently (so AA, AB, . . . BA, BB, . . AAA, AAB ), that makes for 7732 episodes until the KKK episode. which would then be released on the 20th july 2174, so i think you are actually just fine on that front.
