This week on Be Gay Solve Crimes, we’re getting in touch with the evil side of detectives, where policing, repression, and even Hollywood makeup can get a shade too dark. That’s right, it’s Orson Welles’ Touch of Evil (1958).
Join us as we all fangirl over one of our favourite honey-voiced filmmakers, Nova recounts the anecdote of the angriest she’s ever seen Lucy, Mia goes to war with a fly, and we all do our best not to lib out.
If you want to hear more Be Gay Solve Crimes, you should sign up to our Patreon! For as little as £5 a month you can get access to a new bonus episode from us every fortnight as well as all our previous bonus episodes.
Join us next week for a film Orson Welles despised, it’s the Alfred Hitchcock classic Rear Window.
Be Gay Solve Crimes are on Bluesky, where you can also find each of the team: November Kelly, Mia Mulder, and your local librarian Lucy, who writes all the music for the show.

On the subject of Orson Wells and borders, I'm always reminded of the story about him showing up to the Gate theatre in Dublin, aged 20 or thereabouts, and claiming to have big Broadway credentials but since it was the 1920s they couldn't exactly check quickly. The theatre manager at the time would later say he knew he was full of it but he respected the hussle so he gave him a job and that was some of Wells's first directing work. Who knows if the manager was actually duped but in the end it was Orson Wells, one of the eventual greatest directors of the era and potentially of all time, he caught the right vibe and went with it

Re: Makeup tutorials from Orson Welles… Have you seen this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ6v7GHYDbM
I’m so glad y’all are Orson Welles girlies. I was worried when you said you were doing this film that you were going to rip my boy to shreds. Plus as an avid fan of his radio plays hearing his voice on this pod was like slipping into a warm bath
Could we have an episode on the Parallax View? The main character in that is terrible at protecting, but kind of serves, and it has a six minute slideshow in the middle of the film that's just a montage of pictures that would relate to someone with an antisocial personality. Plus a lot of the characters' speech patterns sound exactly like Donald Trump's.
Inspired by Welles in this… is Holly Martins from the Third Man a detective?
you better believe it
1:05:17 DID NOVEMBER JUST QUOTE FUCKING REINHARD HEYDRICH?! MR. HOLOCAUST HIMSELF?!
yes, consciously, in a discussion about the self-romanticising worldviews of racist criminal police officers who weaponise the law to kill innocent people.
I was surprised by your interpretation of the confession being genuine. I thought the dark ending was that he was tortured into confessing, so even though Vargas caught Quinlan for planting evidence, the rest of the corrupt police force is still there and the falsely accused man is still likely to hang. Vargas hasn't solved *the* problem, he's only solved *a* problem. (Not to mention the amount of explaining he's going to have to do with two dead cops on his hands...)
god, that is a really interesting interpretation! bleak, but interesting!
Also one day the Silent Hill/SIGNALIS episode :3 ??
"He's picking up this twink in a bar and using him" was a sentence I thought was going to end very differently
This movie is from the era when foreign movies were given INSANE titles in Italian, so for a moment I had to try to remember if this was "La morte corre sul fiume" (death rides on the river), but, no, it was "L'Infernale Quinlan"
All you need to fix a bad script is an Orson Welles rewrite and Marlena Dietrich.
Changing my name every week to break the general pace of the post credit roll every week until morale stops improving Edit: additionally, watched a movie recently I Cannot Recommend Enough called “I Killed That Man”. Woman detective/journalist to boot
I was going to include a bit, of: "is a medieval French monk, adding extra letters to the dictionary for no reason."
On the subject of chav horror, any chance of ever doing the not unproblematic zucker-abrams-zuckeresque love letter to British police procedurals A Touch of Cloth?
I’m ngl, I like this more than KJB a little, mostly because this is way less negative
If I am staring at a 6'7" lady in public, it's not because I'm going to call the BTA and 100% because of completely normal creepy reasons.
Oh fuck yeah, please do 12 Angry Men.
22:58 Spy Kids 3 drop
Vargas doesn't drink. Vargas doesn't smoke...
Egg creams are genuinely good.
Got a Mexican homie named Charlton Heston
Knowing absolutely nothing about Orson Welles (aside from those Paul Masson outtakes) made this a VERY interesting listen 🤣
Asking "sparkling or flat?" as I bring over a tray of chocolate soda and Yoohoo There's also the "ice cream soda" which is like a float but just straight carbonated water instead of cola or root beer. Then there is an egg cream which is just another word for an ice cream soda if I remember correctly? I have to Mentat through all my Archie comics to remember Dessert, flight, and weapon technology really show you progress in the 20th century
In Australia we call soda poured over a scoop of ice cream a ‘spider’. And the kiosk at my local surf beach still serves them through the summer season. Raspberry, lime or coke
I think I've made the suggestion for Rorschach from Watchmen, forgotten it and then gone through that again somehow. Please free me from this demon
Also, since I just watched it, Tome Cruise's character from The Firm. Is a lawyer a detective sometimes? How can we understand Gene Hackman's character
Re: the idea of Orson Welles as a makeup tutorial influencer - You can totally see him giving that takedown of Woody Allen straight to the camera while using a blending sponge, right?
I can now.
"even hollywood makeup can get a touch too dark" oh no is this movie going to be Dutchmaxxing
:(
Huh so is this what Vargus does? Have we finally found out?
Beat me to it, dammit
Orson Welles. 💖 Edit: oh my god someone else who thought "Orson Welles is the only cis man I could ever be"
Dropping a random recommendation. There's a movie called Honey Don't that came out last year. Margaret Qualley as a hard-boiled detective in contemporary northern California. Cast is stacked for what was billed more as a low stakes B movie. My understanding is that critics didn't take to it, and it's a solo Coen movie so there's always something there, but also not, however I like it as one of those sort of Detective Versus Assorted Random Quests Journal Entries kind of movies. The incoherence speaks to me.
My wife and I watched "driveaway d[oll]s" in theaters. There's something kind of nice and interesting about a cis man and his lesbian wife making sapphic crime B movies.
Okay, I need to excise this demon, unfortunately it’s… well… have you considered a 2005 movie starring criminally young Joseph Gordon-Levitte called… Brick.
Okay but like, a film I have nothing but positive memories of
Somewhere in the dark recesses of space this eldritch elder god exists, sleeping. Maybe it woke up?
Mishead the intro as "I'm November Kelly." "I'm your local librarian." "And I'm your mother."
Imagine if you misheard it in the same one voice.
