“THIS IS TUPAC TAYLOR!” | Father Figure Reaction (Robert's Version) - Journey To The Eras Tour PT21
Robert is back on the Journey to the Eras Tour and this time, Taylor Swift is coming for somebody.
Following immediately after our reaction to “My Tears Ricochet,” we jump straight into “Father Figure,” one of the most pointed and emotionally charged songs from The Life of a Showgirl.
This one is a little different, though.
Rick has already heard “Father Figure,” so this episode is all about Robert’s first reaction. And because we wanted to give Patreon supporters something a little more personal and unfiltered, this reaction is staying here on Patreon.
Before we even get into the song, we set the stage with some of the history surrounding Taylor’s masters, the chain of ownership from Scott Borchetta to Scooter Braun to Shamrock, and ultimately back to Taylor. We talk about the business side of the situation, the decisions that were made along the way, and why Taylor’s relationship with the music industry has shaped so much of the story behind this song.
And then Robert hears the song.
We break down the lyrics, metaphors, storytelling, and production the same way we normally do, listening to a section, pausing, and unpacking what Taylor is actually saying.
One of the biggest things that stands out is just how specific Taylor is.
This isn't a vague breakup song.
She's not describing somebody who briefly crossed her path. She's painting a portrait of a person she knew deeply enough to recognize exactly who he was and exactly what he was capable of. In just a short amount of time, Taylor manages to give you an entire character study.
We dig into the way she essentially dismantles his character line by line, including the “mahogany grain” lyric and the imagery surrounding money, power, appearances, and manipulation.
We also talk about something that can happen when money enters a relationship and especially what happens when a LOT of money enters the equation. How does someone's behavior change when the stakes suddenly become enormous? And what does that reveal about who they were all along?
Then we get into one of the most interesting reactions of the episode…
Robert officially declares:
“THIS IS TUPAC TAYLOR.”
😂
And honestly, once he says it, we have to unpack it.
Robert explains why this song makes him even more convinced that Taylor has to be a Tupac fan not just because of what she's saying, but because of the way she chooses to say it. We talk about the difference between simply being angry and turning that anger into a carefully constructed piece of storytelling that leaves absolutely nowhere to hide.
We also get into the George Michael connection behind the song, the writing credits and publishing implications, and one of the many little details that makes Taylor's songwriting so much fun to dissect.
Including the significance of “I protect the family” appearing six times.
Yep. We noticed that too.
From there, we get into the larger themes behind the song:
• Why the title “Father Figure” is so powerful
• Why Taylor's emotional connection makes the song feel so universal
• The difference between owning publishing rights and owning master recordings
• Taylor's UMG deal and the protections she fought to put in place for other artists
• Whether Taylor is more like Prince or Michael Jackson when it comes to controlling her art
• The way Taylor's actions continue to reveal her character in contrast to the industry's biggest power players
• Why “Father Figure” feels surprisingly hip-hop influenced
• That KICK DRUM
• Whether the song makes the playlist
• And, of course, our latest round of clowning about getting to hear these songs performed live someday
Because if Taylor ever puts “Father Figure” on a setlist…
Robert may have a problem.
This is Part 21 of our Journey to the Eras Tour, and another step toward getting Robert fully caught up before the boys eventually have to survive Taylor Swift live.
Come hang out with us on Patreon for another unfiltered Robert’s Version reaction and let us know:
Did you hear “Tupac Taylor” too? 😂
