Should We Be Hearing This?! | The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived - Journey To The Eras Tour PT18

This time, Rick and Robert are diving into the lyrics of one of the most brutal, personal, and downright uncomfortable songs in Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department: “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived.”

And almost immediately, the boys realize something feels different.

Because this doesn't really feel like a song.

It feels like a letter.

Before we press play, we take a step back and revisit the emotional landscape surrounding The Tortured Poets Department including the end of Taylor's long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn, the whirlwind that was Matty Healy that followed, the Eras Tour happening simultaneously, and the complicated circumstances surrounding the album's creation and release.

Then the lyrics start.

And Rick and Robert have a LOT to say.

We talk about why the opening verse and chorus feel less like traditional songwriting and more like we're accidentally reading something deeply personal that was never meant for us. The boys even compare the experience to Kendrick Lamar's “Meet the Grahams”; that uncomfortable feeling of being a fly on the wall in a room you weren't invited into while someone says exactly what they've been holding inside.

From there, we break down the anger underneath the song, the feeling of betrayal and disappointment, and the difference between simply being heartbroken and reaching that point where the emotions have gone numb and all that's left is rage, clarity, and questions.

And then there's that Jehovah's Witness line.

Yeah. They loved that one. 😂

We dig into some of Taylor's most clever wordplay, metaphors, double entendres and lyrical choices including the “putting me on your wall and stabbing me with your pushpins” imagery - and start doing what we did during our Folklore reactions: trying to piece together the story behind the lyrics and figure out what might have happened between the lines.

We also get into Taylor's history with heels, height, and relationships, including the running conversation around why she was so often seen wearing flats around shorter partners and why Travis Kelce has made that particular problem disappear. 😂

But then we hit THE BRIDGE.

And everything changes.

The production explodes. The energy shifts. The questions start coming faster and faster.

Were you sent by someone?
Did you sleep with a gun underneath out bed?
Were you a sleeper cell spy?

It's not just one question.

It's Taylor desperately trying to understand how someone could have been so different from the person she thought she knew.

And that's where Rick and Robert really start unpacking what makes this bridge so powerful. It's not necessarily because it's the best bridge Taylor has ever written, but because it completely changes the emotional weight of the entire song.

We also talk about the lyric video's incredible visual style, the redacted-document aesthetic, the constantly changing fonts and lettering, the way the visuals mirror the chaos of Taylor's thoughts, the massive production switch, and the sheer amount of venom packed into those final lyrics.

And yes…

Taylor absolutely spilled his game.

If you've ever wondered why Swifties have such strong feelings about the man at the center of this song, Rick and Robert are about to understand a LOT more. 😂

This is Part 18 of our Journey to the Eras Tour, where we're taking two rap fans - Rick and Robert - through Taylor Swift's music, song by song, and watching them slowly discover what makes her songwriting so damn good.

Also while we were listening to this, it hit me that she also mentions this in Honey. “Ask what I’m wearing” but too high to remember in the morning but Travis stays until morning. That’s a huge deal to her it seems. I’m so happy she is happy now. ❤️

If yall are talking about “you didn’t measure up in any measure of a man”. Idk. Let me count the ways!! Lol Im glad ya’ll know that Matty and her had a 10 treat history. Even songs as far back as folklore are written about Matty. Midnights…Matty…TTPD…almost all Matty. They were very very close. Can’t wait for them to see it on the ERAs tour!!! Changes everything!!!

(I still pretend I'm getting shot every time I hear her sing the words "inboxes" and "boring". Does that mean I've watched too many grainy ass live streams?)

Joe Alwyn is 6'-1" - 6'-2" ... I wonder why he wouldn't want Taylor to wear heels?

R
Rhonda · August 17, 2026

Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t like her wearing heels. Never heard that about Joe…interesting

It's so funny that you mentioned You're So Vain! Taylor was once asked in a Vogue interview which lyrics from another artist she wished she had written and she said "I had some dreams they were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee" from You're So Vain.
