The teenage love triangle is officially complete.
For Part 17 of our Journey to the Eras, Rick and Robert finally hear James’ side of the story with Taylor Swift’s “betty” from folklore. After previously reacting to “cardigan” and “august,” the guys now have all three perspectives and they have A LOT to say about James, Betty, and the choices that got everyone here.
Recorded just minutes after our “august” reaction, we kick things off with some housekeeping, millennial nonsense, and a little discussion about how Taylor has completely spoiled us with all of her different album variants. Then, around the 9-minute mark, we finally dive into “betty.”
And immediately, the guys start connecting the dots.
From the “I'm only 17 I don't know anything” connection to the little details that make James’ world feel unmistakably teenage, they start piecing together what happened from his perspective. Then comes the dancing, the excuses, the conflicting perspectives, and the realization that James may have some serious explaining to do.
As the reaction continues, we revisit “cardigan” and “august,” compare all three perspectives, debate what really happened, and have some fun filling in the blanks Taylor intentionally leaves open.
Because that's one of the things we love about Taylor's storytelling: she gives you enough pieces to understand the story, but leaves just enough unanswered for you to finish it yourself.

Taylor said cardigan is written from Betty's view like 20 years later reflecting back. She goes over it more on the long pond sessions! Also she says Augustine isn't a bad girl, interesting things she says about all 3 songs!
Nice job guys! I like Robert’s take on James immaturity and how he maybe experienced relationships for the first time with Betty. I think we have to have some grace for all three of these characters for different reasons. Haha Rick figuring it all out with exile! Good job to you all! Love you guys! ❤️
I always pictured it that he was away for the summer because august says when you are back at school so she might not have known. And I picture it’s kind of farther away and that’s why she says you weren’t mine to lose, he’s only there for the summer
