I really like how this story describes the protag cutting his arm. as someone who has struggled with cutting I think it is an eerily accurate description of what it’s like to struggle with the urge. I interpret the story, as the guitar itself as this manifestation of the urge to self harm, how stress can push you into the urge, how it makes you feel afterward, and the need for more “blood”

In regards to Thirteen Ghosts, my mother said it was my favorite as a kid (maybe 4-5 years old). She said my favorite part was when the guy got cut in half by the glass. The movie was always on in the house. I do, however, attribute the bathtub scene from Thirteen Ghosts (and the Courage the Cowardly dog bathtub scene in Kat'z Motel) to my fear/discomfort of bathrooms.

i find it odd that people are acting like the ONLY perk of being a patreon is bonus episodes and when you don't get that, you are getting absolutely NOTHING for your patreon sub. which is just not true. what you get as well are early access to live show tickets and merch [AND a discount!], sometimes polls to decide which story gets read next that non-patreon fans do not get to take part in, early announcements and news, reviews of films and bts content, and earlier access to the episodes in general [usually half an hour to an hour] than the general public. sure you want your bonus episodes, and yes it's disappointing not to get them, but to basically say that there is NOTHING ELSE you get for only 5 bucks a month is just incorrect. the unsub option is right there, if that's still not enough.

I want a story about a dude selling his soul for YouTube fame.

I think some people in this Patreon need to reevaluate their par-asocial relationship with these two grown men 1. Hunter and Isaiah are human beings with lives and families outside of their content creation. They deserve breaks and compassion like everyone else 2. They also promised a product that we aren’t receiving. This isn’t YouTube, this isn’t a donation, it’s a purchase. When we spend money for a product we are owed that product. 3. Alot of people here are just here for the content. They aren’t invested in these two men’s lives, they enjoy the entertainment. So when people solely paying because they want content aren’t getting that content, they’re going to be upset. 4. If they need a break, they should take it. If they’re too busy or promised more than they can deliver that’s fine… lower the prices. If bimonthly exclusive content is worth 5$ a month, and we aren’t getting that bimonthly exclusive content… change the price. 5. I think there’s a huge disconnect between people spending 5$ a month and people that trusted these two to deliver content as promised and paid for a yearly subscription of 54$. That’s a huge difference. 6. 5$ a month or 54$ a year might not seem like a lot to you (specifically that one dude who said “if 5$ is so important to you then you shouldn’t be spending it on Patreon subscriptions”) then good for you. But there are kids on here too. A 14 year old spending their 50$ of birthday money on a subscription to a show they really like is gonna be more upset that they spent all the money they had and received nothing. That’s not them being irresponsible with their funds, it’s a gift, that they aren’t getting. Not everyone’s situation is the same. I personally really enjoy these two men’s banter and content both individually and as a team. I pay for Hunter’s Patreon too so I can help support his fantastic art and films. But I’m also a 19 year old girl who has bills to pay and food to buy. If I pay to support content and the content stops being produced then I’m paying two fully grown men, 100x richer then me who get to spend everyday with their families, control their schedules, and take days off whenever they want while I work my ass off 40 hours a week, just for funszies. I don’t want to do that. I want to support these projects and the men behind them. Not just pay strangers for existing.

I love this story because theirs a lot the can be done with the character. For example the set up for the sacrifice was going to be Bud or the Hippie Girl, but with the former I almost want it to be that Bud is the burnt out failed remnant of a prior owner of the guitar. That he couldn't keep up the life and sacrifices and his punishment is being a hollowed out living shell of himself haunting a place closest to his life and dream. The Hippie Girl can be set up if story continued into the big sacrifice after he has some moderate fame, a relationship, who he kills to keep the high going — she trys to save him and that tips him over the edge. Or maybe he kills his mom, who becomes worried and even more estranged and he kills her to quiet her voice trying to bring him back from his fantasys. I could see an ending where he eventually can't quench and satiate both the guitar and his own appetite, screws it big time, loses the guitar, and years down the line we see him in Buds position as a shadowed husk haunting another bar — and he sees a Hippie Chick (maybe the same one as if she hasn't changed), and a young man on stage just like him with the guitar (or a guitar similar) in hand.

This story should be longer I think, the concept is good enough and it was written very well! A lot of fun!

Really enjoyed this one - sometimes the old ways (tropes) are the best. I did wonder about some of the tropes that might be missing: a deal with the Devil can be where someone is already good at something wants to be the best (e.g. Faust, Tartini, Paganini; our protagonist is not that good at the beginning), and it is their own hubris which destroys them. Also: is the traditional ending important - where the person gets their comeuppance? Still so good though.

I totally get wanting extra content but to those complaining a ton, don't you simply want to support them as well?

this story feels like it written by me when i was like 16. guitar bro here. also i keep laughing at the implication that the story is posthumously turning every member of the 27 club into murderers, assuming they all had a similar deal to johnny. I think it would be easier to digest or slightly less cringe if he was playing his own original music and the story focused less time on covers and more on the dynamic between characters. We just need the main character to be a different kind of loser, someone slightly further along in his musical journey, maybe writing songs and putting out albums that nobody is buying. But that all changes when he finds this instrument that starts to change who he is. It could function more as a sort of allegory for selling out. or even a story about pouring more and more of your soul and trauma into your art until its basically gone and the creative well is dry so you start using others as fodder to fuel your art. As of now it kind of reads like a stereotypical monkeys paw story that has an unresolved ending. there are good bones here though. the mechanic of the guitar needing blood is great. the pacing is wonderful and the descriptions are vivid. If i were to take a crack at this, i would make johnny an older man filled with desperation, a washed up one hit wonder headlining at dive bars and his dead career is revitalized when he finds the aforementioned axe.

Correction: This story felt like HALF of a Tales from the Crypt episode. The writing is great and I liked the pacing. But it didn't escalate hard enough to where is became horrific. In TftC, this is the midway point where the prog realizes his actions have consequences, makes the wrong choice, and things end horribly. This story ended abruptly imo.
