makes me think of silent hill a little bit. this dark mysterious version of a place you already know, filled with these grotesque monsters/creatures that are physical embodiments of the MCs guilt. the story was definitely WAY too short but a very interesting concept.

The more I listen to this the more disappointed I am in the ending. This story didn't need any sort of twist, or even paranormal aspect at all. The dynamic of a gay kid being sent to a white supremacist camp to be reformed and another gay kid attacks him with a fucking erection is immediately fascinating and I wanted so much more of that. When I remember this story it feels like the second half is from a different story and it's possibly the most disappointed I've been considering how gripped I was with the concept of this real world horror. I'd never be so arrogant as to tell a writer to rewrite one of their creations, but because of how fantastic a writer he is I would love one for this story that continues the events of a closeted Nazi and a normal kid thrned Nazi because he was somewhat outwardly gay. The jump into him getting deformed into the discretion of the letter GOD I just wanted so much more.

Anyone claiming thay Isaiah is racist due to him being Christian is insane. Your view on christianity has been warped by those that abuse it for their own personal beliefs. The true modern christian way does not teach racism, if you think it does then please explain the existence of predominantly black churches. Isaiah has never once pushed his beleifs onto anyone that I know of. I myself am atheist and Isaiah seems to respect the beleifs of atheism instead of telling them theyre going to hell, for Christ's sake hes friends with hunter. Oh my God I had to read Touching Spirit Bear in 6th grade and it was a trip. I remember after he gets mauled by the bear and throws up, he has to fight off seagulls that are trying to eat his vomit so he can eat it himself out of anger. I remember asking friends “the fuck are we reading?” Yeah there’s a whole redemption arc, but it was just a terrible book. 2/10 do not recommend.

30:35 Hunter is 10000% right. I grew up in the deep south with a lot of racism around me. My dad would always tell me "oh x place is dangerous" or "never go here" or "don't stop at red lights here because you'll get car jacked or killed." Once I was old enough to think for myself, I realized the common denominator with every place he's ever told me was dangerous was simply that they weren't white-dominant areas. Even if the area was really nice, it was dangerous because black people existed there. It's wild how crazy and paranoid some people can be for no reason. I'm glad I could recognize that truth in middle school, I can't imagine living life in fear that way.

I think Wendi doesn't know the full extent of Christians. He's the minority good. The VAST majority of Christians are holding many of the beliefs of the people who owned the camp in this story, just not the anger or will/freedom to act on it. Camps like this are still real to this day, there's one outside my little town in Oregon, fed by my town and funded by the city council, geared towards "Conversion therapy" and "Assigned Gender Affirmation". There's hardly any minority groups in my town and they are abused and refused police help. I don't think we have a single black officer either and it's not by accident.

As someone who still lives in and was raised in deep South in Louisiana, I can PROMISE you this stuff still exists to this day. I encount this stuff almost daily. I grew up in the church. It was a horrible experience for a queer child. I was told horrible things about people like me and other minorities. Isiah, your church experience is so rare especially for people in the deep South like me. I want to share some of my experiences with you. I was beat at school, a girl randomly head-butted me for no reason.I was called slur by classmates. I was the ONLY openly trans kid in a school of a thousand plus kids. I wore a lot of black and for this my church, I went to for years almost half my life, called me a devil-worshiper and asked my grandmother what was wrong with me. I am scared for my life sometimes when people find out I'm trans. I was pushed away from the church and I can never go back to it for it was such a hateful environment that made me feel guilty for something I can not change. For a long time, I hated myself and tried to "pray my queerness away." I've healed some from this but I still suffer from the hateful rhetoric/propaganda these kinds of people and people similar spread. (This was written half was through the story so I'm not sure how it ends, I just wanted to share my story. Thank you for reading if you did and if you went through something similar. I hope you are healing. I want you to know there's nothing wrong with you!)

I agree with Hunter, the supernatural angle really dulls the premise. I think thats what Hunter was getting at. Its also really weird of the author to make a racist character and camp but to make no mention of how those behaviors affect POCs. Were just to root for him because hes "reformed"? What about all the ppl his bigotry affected? And for him to only become reformed because a trans person called him beautiful is also an inherently selfish reason. As a survivor myself i feel compelled to comment that these bootcamps, survivors refer to as the troubled teen industry, are not yet super regulated unfortunately. It’s an ongoing fight to end institutional child abuse. The troubled teen industry can present as bootcamps, but also boarding schools, mental health/rehab facilities, and more. it’s an extremely manipulative and abusive industry towards both parents and children. they take advantage of these struggling families and cause extreme traumas and tear them apart. they exist all over the country but are particularly bad in utah and nevada and that area. Unsilenced is a nonprofit that works in this realm, it’d be so awesome if you guys could shout them out on the podcast! they do some great work to expose these facilities, raise awareness and help survivors take legal action.

I think this is the closest we’ll get to them reading “Abandoned by Disney”. Some of the plot elements match, not only is “abandoned” in the title.

I feel like hunters experience is the opposite here, some small religious upbringings do have wrong teachings, however as a kid you take the outliars and loudest, then later on social media backs up said outliara that you remeber rather than the majority. If it were two years ago I would have agreed however the only reason it seems like so is for those who are too separated from the actual groups themselves and only observe from online media. The loudest people will always be the worst people online majority of the time, most Christians don't really care all too much about online presence and are how Isaiah describes them and for a society that doesn't like to intermingle with eachother nowadays from a distance and seeing the few outliers who say blasphemous statements against other people it can make Christians seem to be all evil when your feed gives you more of it due to your prolonged viewing of said media and your interactions with it, even if you say things against it you'll still be feed more and more. It's the same kind of thing that the loud religious types online would say about lgbtq or furries, taking the outliers who commit illegal activities and making it out to be the majority, like predatory action, be it against younger folk, or animals, outliers taken to be the majority.

I think what Hunter doesn't realize with the ending is that this story you're reading on Reddit, originally intended for 'this story is real' /nosleep, Is the protagonist revealing the truth. This is his final message telling the story of his past before having a Ted the Caver ending. The conviction I felt in the final line gives me zero doubt that the protagonist will commit to his goal.

As a "survivor" of the TTI (troubled teen industry), i can promise you they are still doing this shit way more than anyone talks about. I got the fake kidnapping and everything, and the place I was sent to is still fucking open. Once you were there at their little facility they would threaten you with a wilderness program, which is the kind most people think of. If you're into this kind of stuff it's quite a rabbithole. The number of unexplained deaths involved with these places is unbelievable.

God this story is exactly why horror being seen as cheap is a ridiculous concept. Such a mature and interesting take on a very real horror. Christian’s choice to write the main character with nuance is a very good decision too and it’s perfectly encapsulated in the villain. Having a pathetic and disgusting entity who captures and manipulates young children into being hateful and violent husks is a PERFECT allegory for those in power manipulating the masses to hate. This story couldve easily been a super exploitative and visceral story but Christian wrote it with just the perfect amount of restraint that the message is gotten across clearly and with just the right amount of horror. Also I hope to GOD the boys’ chats throughout will finally get people on tik tok to stop blindly calling them every form of bigot on earth.

Fyi "skinheads" aren't nazis, those are boneheads, skinhead roots come from muticultralism between working-class british youth and Jamaican rudeboys. Just like Isaiah's point of white supremacists co-opting Christian symbolism or such the "style" of skinheads were stolen by the National Front in the early 70's and the label as well. He said they would force them to hike and restricted food, medicine, etc. apparently the “counselors” would just torture them and when they couldn’t make a fire they had to eat rice raw and if they had injuries or were ill they would very rarely take them to get medical care because they didn’t want hospitals to see the abuse going on. He had to escape with a friend and they had to go through the desert to get help. When he talks about it, it’s definitely something he would like to shut out forever. They’re unfortunately very much still around and many kids have died from abuse and neglect in those programs :(

This story was comically bad.

spirit bear was my assigned reading in FOURTH GRADE 😭😭😭 i still vividly remember how when he got mauled by the bear and was hurt so bad he couldnt move. after 3 days he poops himself.

These camps still exist. I know people who survived them. They stage kidnappings; blinfolds, zipties, driving around in circles so you dont know where you are. The parents know the state and general area but they can't visit. Kids are denied food and other basic necessities if they dont comply to the standards of the counselors\ directors. They are assulted by other campers and there is no protection. They can't call the police, there are no phones. If girls are impregnated they are either forced to miscarry or carry the baby to term and then give them up for adoption. Many kids die at these camps and most survivors have lasting physical and emotional trauma. A lot of times they are sponsored or owned by churches. One of the most notorious, Restoration Youth Academy, is actually run by pastors who think they can beat the gay out of boys as young as 8.

It's a really interesting history of American white supremacist groups in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, and specifically examines how they grew out of the trauma of losing in Vietnam. There are some good sections on the Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord.

Okay I don't normally share actual interpretive thoughts on a story, that's not the CC way I know but allow me just once. I think papa hunter is taking it only as a literal, physical thing of admitting* his guilt. But it's rather Atonement. He LITERALLY brought all the terrible things he's done to light- "documentaries, speeches, an advocate against white supremacy".only Abner has remained secret. So he goes back, finding a cursed place held by this old god of loathing. "Guilt is what allowed us to stay connected" Abner was doing all he could to get Andrew to save him from living as a part of the embodiment of suffering. the whole idea is olde Evil finding and feeding on a place OF pure evil. (After being bored by the modern world aka more tolerant) Clearly happy in its new Lil domain. But Andrew came back, guilt leading him to " shine the light". SO Using the factor that the area was a place of savagery, so it drew a primordial creature of embodied loathing. Guilt being a saving connection here for abner (spirit) and Andrew. Unspoken guilt leading to salvation for many Souls. There's so much done via representation/implication/ interpretation. Also It's a horror short story. Why so confused by mixed horror? I thought the ending was beautiful, he's gonna go destroy where 'hate' now nests. AS he did after his mind flipped in prison. He will expose it to the light. Literally blow it up. Making LITERAL light inescapable . His sacrifice atoning for the one thing he hasnt. Alot of nuaceed understanding and open minded interpretation I guess? It's a story that doesn't hold your hand. The literal and the supernatural are overlays of eachother. Not clear. But giving you the tools to see what u see in it. That's just how it read to me though. Not saying im right, just think it's important, in reading creative works to be able to see things as shifting shades and not THIS means THIS therefore THAT doesn't fit. I was raised in a homophobic and racist church and the thing that planted the seed of getting out and growing into a more nuanced and loving way of life was when the gay theater kids were kind to me and accepted me and my same sex "best very close always together friend". and I thought "these people aren't evil, god doesn't want these people to die, these people are kind and accepting". acts of kindness aren't always the catalyst for change but they can be, for me it was.
