I've seen Hunter in the past struggle to identify folk horror so its no real shocker that he doesn't pick up on the elements here, but God him describing this thing as a blue Avatar esc alien is sending me. The United States always attacked first. I have a bit more sympathy for Vietnam draftees, but the Viet Cong had every right to kill the people invading their country as well. In Iraq and Afghanistan, the people had every right to shoot at/kill American soldiers, especially given the fact that American troops were notorious for killing civilians, raiding their homes, bombing them, torturing the innocent, and sexually assaulting women and girls. Non-American lives are just as important as American ones. It’s the same with Iran right now. Iranians must perform mandatory military service/be drafted to protect against the invasion of American forces. The American military members in the Middle East right now volunteered for this, and thought it was a job worth taking on for decent pay and benefits. Any American war veteran outside of WWII is not the victim. Might be some exceptions for Vietnam, but none for voluntary recruits. If we’re talking about the roles of victim/perpetrator and having to choose who lives and who dies, then it is the victims of US invasions who are the child son, and it is the American military - every member who works to keep it going - who is the drunk driver. That’s if we’re being generous and not mentioning the members of the US military who loved what they did and enjoyed participating in crimes against humanity.

This episode is really interesting in that the story itself wasn't that remarkable, but the question the story asked impacted the boys enough to have their own discussion of it. Really good idea!

A few things threw me off about this story. The weirdo demon description was kind of a miss for me. It would have been much better if the "creature" was some, unassuming salary man, something more mundane could be used more effectively. Then, just the guy letting his kid grow up without both of his parents. Sure the drunk driver isn't going to get a "pass" in life, after what he did, but it just ends up with a kid who is effectively being punished for this drunk's choice. It seems written well, but just not an incredibly compelling in the way that it's presented.

Perhaps it needed more development, but would you not start with: somebody does wrong you in a way directly related to the imminent death of a loved one, so the revenge plan is clear at the beginning and then becomes muddled (e.g. someone accidentally does something which leads to another’s death) over time?
