This story was so bad it retroactively made me dislike Psychosis. I cringed so hard at the line about how "we're metal heads, we're outcasts on the finge" and it makes all the moments of "hah I'm so silly" in Psychosis stand out more as being just as cringe

I 100% thought it was setting up the protagonist killing his sister on Christmas. I think the author meant for the last part to be real but the way the whole thing reads as something you'd 100% see on schizogram was just so perfect trying to figure out what normal thing he could be interpreting as the apocalypse. In hindsight I think the lore dump is supposed to be misleading, he keeps raising the stakes to more and more fantastical levels to the point we're really expecting the payoff of reality to hit at any minute.

Reminds me of a dream I had in highschool. In the dream, I was about to get into my car to head to school. It was night out with a full moon, and as I looked up at it, the moon exploded. It was really bright and vivid with colors of violet and blue. It was super pretty and in the dream I just stood there watching it, realizing it was the end of the world and thinking about how pretty it was.

Okay, I have a theory that fixes everything. Hear me out: It was always the sun. Early on in the story, the character suggests that he lives in a basement without windows and suffers from a lot of withdrawal from society and doesn't see the outside very much. This could very easily as well as being semi-irregularly medicated result in him losing track of time. Aka a "burning moon" is literally just how the sun looks. His neighbors getting frustrated could cause the neighbors who do actually love him or were in the past much closer to him get aggressive with him. Especially if they don't understand mental health struggles, that could explain the attack on him earlier in the story. (Perhaps not as aggressive as he claims it to be). Then the neighbor's partner tries to take him out on a date to get him to look up at the sky. Perhaps it's already known that one of his main delusions is that the moon is wrong and it's out to get him, if they can show him that it's just the sun and as she says a "lovely day" multiple times (as in, NOT a night when the moon would be out, a DAY) then maybe the exposure therapy could break him out of the illusion. Hence him overhearing "this better work". He then goes on to say that he hasn't taken his pills for a long period of time which could definitely rapidly exacerbate the issues that he starts to have, which explains the almost instant devolving from a semi-lucid mental horror into a straight up cult action. He says the main event occurs on Christmas Day which would explain why everyone was gathered as a large group around a certain plinth, that plinth is everyone waiting for the Christmas tree to be lit up. Everything he sees is a complete delusion and it devolves into chaos. I can't explain anything past there but that's the only thing to me. That makes sense for the entire story. If someone can come up with a reason that it doesn't make sense anywhere, I could try to explain it with this narrative line, but if someone can debunk my idea, feel free. You have seen the moon just as much in daytime as nighttime. How do you think eclipses happen? Oh the moons on the opposite side as the sun except for today were it darted around to the other side. For the asteroid thing: the DART mission happened specifically to see if we could knock asteroids off path if they were coming towards the earth. We get hit by asteroids all the time but most of them burn up before they make it to the surface of our planet

This is VERY king in yellow to me. Like, two crazy people got together and fed eachother's delusions to the point where they didnt trust eachother. So, to me, theres two ways it could go. One: its literal. I like the concept for a scifi story but i agree its the less interesting version. Or. OR. You are literally following his descent into madness. Like actually. He stops questioning himself and just starts rambling. I think whole christmas thing was probably an psychosis. Will as standing up for him, and maybe got killed in the process, either by alek or by the authorities. At the end, hes essentially moved in with his family, despite his delusions, and they're caring for him full-time. I agree tracy probably left, and dad drinks more cause he cant handle it. I agree with hunter though. The ramblings get too in deoth and detailed. Shit he even gets in to talking about cults and microchips. I think its much more likely this guy is full on psycho, the opposite of the one story where the guy was right, and the brown shirts might just be a fun easter egg to another story. Tldr: moon monster is fun but i agree its the least interesting way this story could have ended. If it was going to be real, i'd have preferred it ended when alek was forced to look at the moon. I think hes nuts.

About 3/4 of the way in. The story had me at the beginning with the believable schizo rambling, but it’s quickly losing me. I really liked the idea of somebody becoming sound of mind after so long of having a mental disorder where they can’t think straight. You could really feel the shift in the writing. I feel like it’d be pretty hard to hallucinate ALL of that alien stuff. I think it definitely could’ve been done better at the end (maybe in a novel format) but it’s such an interesting concept

SCHIZOAFFECTIVE PATRONS NOW IS OUR TIIIIME

This story leads you along between what may be real or what is not, and what I like is that although it is less fun in the latter half it is because the protagonist went off the deep end without his meds. The second half of the story once he has run out of meds, he is fully gone, and with this never doubts what he sees or does. And what he sees and does is absolutely insane with all the space beings and the dreamer on high, brownshirts, who knows and who doesn't know. It all blends together and was harder to listen to because it really feels like the ramblings of a crazy person. Which I think given the setting of the story being a mentally ill man it does more for the story for the writing to shift in such a strong way to demonstrate the change in his mental state without his meds, as he is taking them, he has a lot of clarity and is aware of his past and how unreliable his mind is. A pretty good story but while the tone shift is what it should be given the circumstances of the story, it wasn't as fun as the first half with the mysterious paranoia back and forth.

Dropping a quick comment right after the Dean breaking into his house scene and the boys are talking about it being Shutter Island or a hallucination. Its feels pretty obvious that its gonna be a people look at the moon and get taken over by aliens or somthing cosmic horror body snatching type situation to me. If I am wrong I am wrong, but it feels super obvious and them not getting the same vibe confused me.

I think they’re giving this story more credit then it deserves

They entirely miss the themes of the horror being paranoia and societal distrust of the people around you. They think an “eldritch moon being” taking over the minds of humans is some Star Trek nonsense. Then they have the audacity to say it should’ve all been in his head and that somehow would’ve made it a better story. They completely miss how the schizophrenia is integral to the story and isn’t there just to make you question the validity of what he’s saying. I get that it does a tone shift and that can pull someone out of it but the horror is still there. If it was a character without schizophrenia and the paranoia came purely from the moon stuff and the weird way people were acting, they wouldn’t have acted nearly as bummed out because they would’ve assumed it was true from the start. Instead they think it would be better writing if “Ash was in a coma the whole time and Pokemon aren’t real” or “all the kids in rugrats are a delusion from Angelica”. Why would it be better if it was all in his head? That’s the exact trope we all complain about. I could argue a bunch of other points too about why this isn’t nearly as bad as they act it is. They just got too invested in their own shitty theory that it’s all made up and are mad it’s not as shitty as they would’ve written it.

Not that I’m done with this weeks episode, only about 48 minutes in, with the best part about this podcast is we could have an absolutely horrible story last week, and the guys make it fun, and then we could have an absolutely amazing story this week, and the guys still make it fun, but in a different way. The sci-fi something beyond the stars idea was really cool but the last second "there's actually two moons, the dreamer was from earth, portals are real, we've got a funny metal chip now, also most people weren't under control this is actually a lecture about society, will is dead, and we might be fucked from the guys hunting the brown shirts ok fuck you it's over bye" was really disappointing.

Highly recommend “Asylum” by the same author, it’s a sequel to “Psychosis” and does the unreliable narrator thing a lot better, with a lot more meat on the bone of the story.

Idk if anyone has suggested it but I think y’all would like the game Look Outside. Lots of cosmic/body horror. And very cool art

Good job fellas :) that was fun! Personally, I think that he might actually have just been crazy. At the end of Psychosis it was originally left up in the air. A doctor confirming that something had taken over humanity was like added after the fact as a note. So even tho there wasn't a statement at the end of this one saying "this man is delusional" I think it could still be seen that way. There were a couple things like "that's why we have 2 moons" that felt like the super detailed delusions that work on internal logic for people who are really gone. I liked it.

I’m with Isaiah on this on.. the start of the story was great because it was treading on the line where you can’t tell what’s real and what’s delusion and it was legitimately scary, but then it just became either apocalyptic sci-fi or a full on delusion to the point where I can’t even try to guess what’s really happening, the only thing i got is that this guy thinks the sun is the moon on fire hence why he says there are 2 moons but other than that i really don’t get what’s happening or the point of the story, if anyone has an explanation please share it with me.

me the whole story: it’s almost like there is a moon that’s on fire, it’s called the sun.

No sleep and reddit as a whole has a real “hopecore horror” problem. Hopecore horror as I define it is a horror premise or a story with horror elements that by the end becomes an action, thriller, and/or heroic story where the protagonist fights the horrors and wins. “I dared my friend to ruin my life”, “borrasca part V”, this story, and a few others follow this pattern. Not every story that has the protagonist winning against the horrors is hopecore horror. Hopecore horror has more of a tonal shift, it has a “and everybody clapped” feel towards the end, and more or less is meant to make the reader at ease instead of on edge like other stories.

I like to interpret this story as an allegory for modern (post 2016) society. There’s something deeply wrong with the world yet people go about things like business as usual. No one really knows “what side” another person is on and that creates a self fulfilling prophecy of isolation. Even Ashley not being able to completely know what timing other people were on so she (seemingly) chooses to lie to get her way. And when it comes to our protagonist, he is a deeply flawed narrator who recognizes there’s something wrong but isn’t strong enough to do anything about it. He chooses to self isolate and only rises up after shit had already hit the fan. Then when the status quo is fixed and the threat is gone, he falls right back into complacency. He all of the sudden doesn’t need medication and he assimilates himself into society despite another potential threat being on the horizon. Not unlike some “revolutionary” sentiment from people who really won’t do anything and will become complacent as soon as they get a seat at the throne.

I wonder how this story would have taken shape if it wasn’t on no sleep, like without those restrictions maybe it would have been played out differently.

It was fun to be uncertain of the protagonist at the start, but I fully accept that the end of Part Two establishes that he isn't delusional about the moon cult. It's not Star Trek, it's Eldritch! Horrors from beyond the stars we can't fathom! I think it's a shame that having a solvable plot takes you two out of it when classic Lovecraft stops Elder Gods with disrupted rituals and boat crashes all the time. How else do you fight a mind virus like this? Or would you rather just have the bad ending of the protagonist getting brainwashed? Great story, poor takes.

Isaiah, it wouldn't have been cooler if they had done x, y, z instead. The story was almost perfect; just because it didn't give you the Shutter Island feeling you wanted doesn't mean you should literally make things up to make it appeal the way you want. The narrator is crazy; he literally says so multiple times, and because he is, the extraplanetary intelligence can't manipulate his mind. That's the whole point, that is the 18%, because only 18% of people don't suffer from some sort of mental illness, whether that be PTSD, Schizophrenia, ADD, ADHD, paranoia, you name it. That’s the reason why, when he was taking his pills, he became mind-controlled. It doesn’t go deeper than that; this is a perfect invasion of the body snatchers mixed with the Midwest Angelica situation, and you completely missed the mark because you kept obsessing over your own private narrative interpretation, constantly trying to find a reason why the story would be fake. The story you have made in your head is not only less interesting, but it isn’t even the story you read on paper. This is Matt Dymersk, the guy who wrote Psychosis, not some nobody. If you can give C.K. Walker grace and praise, then why is it so hard to let Matt Dymersk’s work speak for itself?

I feel like he tried to put all of his ideas in near the end and he was trying to elude to that from the start as opposed to him just thinking of it on the fly. But I hope their concepts are tied in nicely if they continue this story, maybe dial them back next time?

I think you would really like Portal in the Forest and Asylum, because it sets up the Lovecraftian stuff in a much better way and builds to it in a much more satisfying way. I haven't finished Portal in the Forest, but I have finished Asylum, and it is so much better than this. The detective vibe from that story works so much better than this, you guys would love it.

As I step into the old cabin in the woods, I hear the faint humming of something coming from the dust filled corner of the interior. *flick* 2 small lights blind me and all I can make out is the silhouette of an old man slumped in what seems to be some type of motorized chair. Something metallic glimmering and shining from the lap of this deranged man. *pow* the bullet wizzing past me and delivered a devastating blow to my beloved dog. I drop to my knees and scream. “WHYYYYYYYY” “WHYYYYYYY” and all I hear the old man say is “damn it. I missed”. So I use my little mutant legs and I run. Run until I bump into this big lipped stranger. He said my aura can…. It can cause a fire and I felt the warm desire, the longing of being wrapped in those big succulent lips and I forgot about my worldly pain for one moment.

I loved psychosis until the ending. Personally, the thought of going completely insane and getting committed is more scary than him actually being right. Besides that, I got the impression it was some kinda alien invasion and that was even worse than him being right. If they had to do it, I wish the reason was something better. Absolutely loved the ambiguity up until the last line. Boo
