They're also banned in a lot of schools now, thankfully not until after I graduated because I loved them and they scared the hell out of me, especially Harold the Scarecrow. It would be an awesome grab bag episode, not to mention the artwork by Stephen Gammell is excellent nightmare fuel. Plus: since it was a compilation of stories and folk tales, Alvin Schwartz, the author, did footnotes at the end of the books detailing some of the origins and variations of the stories, etc.

Since we're talking about spiders today I wanna share a spider story of my own. As a teen I lived in a group home cause of autism. One summer I was just sitting in bed drawing when I saw a MASSIVE spider casually assessing down my closet. It was so huge that I wasn't even sure how I should go about it. I hesitated to take it with a paper towel and as a result it fell onto the floor and ran under my bed. I vacuumed furiously to make sure I'd gotten it. The day went on and since it was summer break I stayed up till 4am drawing and listening to music. Suddenly I see something out of the corner of my eye. It's the spider, crawling up from the tiny crack between the bed and the wall. I had my bed against the corner and somehow there was a tiny crack at the furthest corner so the spider could crawl up from there. I dropped everything and went to get the night shift guy so he could come get it for me. Even tho we had awake night guards they weren't exactly happy when we came and bothered them. But I still convinced him to come and get the spider. When we get to my room the spider was gone. We look for it but it was nowhere to be found. Just when the night guard was about to leave I turned my pillow around... And there it was. If I'd just shrugged it off and went to bed the spider might actually have crawled onto my face in my sleep. The night guard guy killed the spider and that was the end of the story, but I was NOT okay after that.

A man who works for a government agency that documents supernatural happenings. It starts out with just fun stories but over time it builds a lovecraftian overarching narrative that ties our fears into 13 entities that feed off each type of fear. I truly belive it to be one of the best pieces of horror media.

I know this is supposed to be a horror podcast but for the first half of the first story I just cried. I had a relationship I had to end with my partner because of similar circumstances. I won't go into details, but hearing the description of the range of emotions the main character went through, the guilt, the fear of being around them, the want of normalcy even though the distance is palpable. You always hear stories about people being strong and staying through hard times, but not when those hard times result in a fundamentally new person. I've felt so much guilt and cowardice over leaving, even though I knew it was the right decision. Hearing Hunter and Isaiah talk about it being okay to know when to leave was the first time I let myself feel some emotions, not feel guilty and be okay with it. So thanks guys, appreciate ya, this was a needed listen for me.

So the Golden orb weaver thing is something I 1000% relate to. When I was little, I saw one on the side of a car. We didn't really get them in san diego so I had no idea what it was. Being that I had never seen it before but saw the gold and black looking like a skull, it freaked me out. My brother decides to use a water bomb and hit it off the car. Of course our neighbor in the building we lived in decided to be a jackals and had said " oh you shouldn't have done that, that's a revenge spider and now it's going to come eat you." When I couldn't find it, I freaked out and all night long I couldn't sleep with me tucking the sheets around me like a cocoon so nothing could get in. To make matters worse, my brother made me watch arachophobia days later.

I don't have arachnophobia, but I have had multiple experiences with spiders that make me surprised I'm not more scared. I used to live in a civil war era house with an unfinished "basement" that my mom kept our washer and dryer in. It was lined with black widow webs and brown recluse. I have had multiple run ins with them and now I have some scars on my ankles from the bites. My worst one I got while I was still in school. I was sitting at study hall and feeling a bit weird. I looked over and my arm was red and swollen (almost double the size around my upper forearm) and I had no idea I'd been bitten. I had a striation stretching up my vein towards my heart. Went to the nurse and she got really worried and immediately sent me home to go to the urgent care. I get to UC and by that time the red striation had gone up another 4-5 inches. It was about 6 inches from my heart at that point lol. I still didn't feel sick, in pain, or itchy. Nurses were freaking out and I had to get a bunch of steroid shots in my butt which had me howling. It is funny looking back and whenever I mention it to friends they look at me like I'm crazy for not being more wound up about it. Luckily all of mine I caught soon enough that I didn't have any skin necrosis (brown recluse). I've had more steroid shots than I can remember because of it. It feels like getting punched in the arm for hours. Thankfully I moved out and haven't had issues since. I know they're really common in the Midwest but that was my only run-in 😅

i remember my dad picking me up from elementary school one day and he told me we had a new pet. as a kid i was excited bc obviously i thought it was a dog or cat, that immediately turned to absolute fear when he told me it was a spider. not just a regular spider, a fucking goliath bird eater. i remember immediately bursting into tears and freaking out until we got home. as time went on i grew used to it bc it was behind glass and even liked to watch it sometimes, they really are amazing creatures to observe from afar. but she was fucking huge. shes definitely passed on by now, but i will never forget how scared i was seeing it for the first time. she was genuinely bigger than my face

Great story so far but man, the amount of times I've heard "gain purchase" between all these stories is starting to drive me crazy.

I was hoping that waiting to watch this until I got to work would make it easier to sleep in my bed at night, but it was in fact a mistake because I instead spent the entire work day thinking every shadow on my desk was a vicious beast

I do wish Isaiah would attribute some stories to mental breaks/disorders instead of everything always being supernatural. This story, especially the ending, really reads like someone deep into a mental break. There's nothing scarier than the human mind, it doesn't always have to be an entity to be scary. .

Some tarantulas can live many years. In fact some species like the Chilean rose hair can take up to 10 years to even reach sexual maturity in some cases. I love tarantulas because they can possess colors that you can hardly find anywhere else in nature. My smaller ones do almost literally teleport, they are that quick though, but as long as ur smart and careful they can be safely managed and appreciated. Just remember if you’re new to the hobby try to stick with common New World species!

Those yellow orb weavers, or banana spiders as my family likes to call them, are the only spiders that I’m fine with. There would be one that made a web in the summer outside my parents window, my sisters and I would feed it grasshoppers. It’d make an egg sack and then disappear. The next year, there would be another banana spider in the same spot. This continued for about 4 years. I’d like to think it was the same line of spiders continuously coming back

Growing up, I had pet tarantulas. If I see a spider in my house (unless it's a black widow or brown recluse), I pick it up and take it outside. I've never been scared of spiders, and these stories don't bother me at all. But I can only imagine how awful this must be for people with arachnophobia.

I have a similar spider recurrinf nightmare, but it goes like this: i wake up, and my room is fucking FULL of spiderwebs. Big, thick, messy spiderwebs, crawling sith spiders. So thick i can't sit up without getting into one, but none of them have webbed me. The webs are full of giant orb weavers or joros, and i have to maneuver out of my room without touching any of the webs. Its fucking terrible.

OH MY GOSHHHH! I’m sitting here listening to this while cleaning a table and chairs that had been in the garage for a couple of months and suddenly…a spider. Luckily I’m not really afraid of smaller spiders. A wolf spider can f right off though.

This made me curious so I looked into it. It looks like the most likely way for exposure therapy to go badly is if it is done incorrectly. I couldn’t find anything about becoming obsessed or over interested in the exposure topic. Super interested to see if anyone has found something different?

Arachnophobia is one fear that I really don’t get. Unless you live in Australia or something, the worst a spider is gunna do is make you itch a bit. I have been bitten by a hobo spider that really fucked up my leg, but I never saw it bite me and it healed pretty easily? I’m curious as to what it is that’s so scary about them. Especially big spiders because usually the bigger they are the less venomous. Can anyone help me understand why they don’t like them?

I remember a story I listened to on Mrcreepypastas channel about a guy who got into an accident and was bed ridden And while he was in the bed, unable to move, a wolf spider came up to him and laid its eggs on his head, it was very vivid woth the descriptions of the baby spiders crawling all over him. Made me feel all sorts of wrong as an arachniphobe.

As someone who was super afraid of spiders- got lore to that lol. But I’m a nature/animal lover and I thought jumping spiders were so cute, and so said I’m getting one even tho I’m afraid and got one cutie and while shaking while holding it one of the first times- I witnessed it attempt to jump from my hand to my shirt only to face plant. And I stood there and I was like “this is what I’m terrified of?”

if y'all like spider/bug horror, i BEG of you to check out the movie Infested! french horror about a exotic pet guy who gets a new spider, & the horrors begin! it is SO good, genuinely terrifying.

Ironically we had a giant orb weaver that made a web and a lil egg sack on the front of the garage on the farm. It was honestly nasty as hell and my uncle LOVED to smack the metal siding so it'd bounce and start crawling around it was awful. I think the spiders were just thick that year or something because the chicken coop was fenced off inside and connected to the cow barn with a little section for tools and there was genuinely dozens of these FAT brown spiders hanging from the ceiling it was awful.

I really liked the first story, but the second storys ending was so insanely good. The tension was palpable and the line "Come...see me" was genuinely heart breaking.

There used to be an entry on Wikipedia for the fear of worms and the Pic for it was a kid screaming at a handful of gummy worms on the table Also I once got trapped in the woods for like two hours because I was surrounded by those gold orb weavers (we called em banana spiders) and I didn't have a stick to fight em off with. Oh also, at my elementary school, we had a baseball field with two bathroom at the far end of it, outside the fence, near the woods. They were unusable and basically condemned. They looked pretty much how the neighbor's house is described in the first story. Completely covered in webbing so thick you couldn't see into the bathroom with HUNDREDS of banana spiders all over it. So with thw first story, I think at the beginning when she first grabbed the spider and threw it on the ground was the moment it let go of her. He couldn't find the spider after that because it had burrowed into that night and she may have just been too far gone already

Being tired of being scared of spiders is definately what cured me of most of my fear. It got exhausting and eventually I just stopped having a gut reaction to them. Now I just go find something to safely trap them in and chunk them outside. We have a whole family of palm sized wolf spiders in my house, generations of them, and I let them stay bc they keep to themselves and eat the bad guys, but the rare times they come out in the open and I startle them and they do that goofy ass squiggly no leg moves at the same time run, that’s gross still. Move right losers! Last weekend I went to my moms and put her window unit in for her and after we sealed the window back up we looked down and there was a giant tarantula stuck in a plastic bin, and it was really pretty and so big, but fucking gross bc it was so big, but so cool and awesome, but disgusting. My mom tipped the bin to let it out and it did that same goofy ass discombobulated run and then nestled next to her outer wall. I made sure to tell it how fucking gross but cool it was before I shuddered inside

Because Isaiah didn't get any Golden Orb Weaver trauma, I'll tell a personal story. I was in Vietnam (vacation), and I was looking for Golden Orb Weavers (specifically Nephila pilipes). It was getting to the final week in the north of the country, and I hadn't seen one yet, which was getting to be pretty disappointing (lots of other cool spiders, but no Golden Orb Weaver). And then, along a path nearby a village near Ba Be lake, I saw one. It was quite obvious, because it was hanging in a giant web in between two saplings, silhouetted against the lake. Needless to say, I was excited and took lots of pictures of it. It big, and battle-scarred, with two missing legs, but its gold and black patterns were very pretty nonetheless. And then, after seeing it, my brain recognized the pattern. Like, I hadn't seen them before, but on the way back down the same path, I saw dozens of them. While this was really cool, it was also a bit creepy. Sometimes, our own minds work in unsettling ways. You can glance over a previously unseen pattern even when searching for it, even having seen it before in images, only to zero in on it every-time after having seen it in real just once. It was a cool experience. Also, these stories were awesome. Both great in their own way. I love the positive note with the last one. Always like it when one can view something monstrous in a sympathetic light.

Interesting fact about Kingdom Of The Spiders. It was wildly inhumane, since it was before animal welfare laws for movies. They caught hundreds of wild tarantulas for the movie and killed a ton of them. No props, all real animals. Stomped, run over, shot, thrown. Crazy, considering the whole reason Hollywood uses tarantulas is because they're basically harmless and docile.

Fear responses are, at least in part, based on novelty. The more you're exposed to something without harm, the less powerful your reaction is. The point of exposure therapy is to desensitize you. Yeah, if you just put someone with arachnophobia in a room with a million spiders, that's not going to work. You probably won't help them. That's why it's exposure therapy, with psychologists, and not just cousin Jim's Spider Pit. Not that the spider pit won't work for some people, but it might have more side effects.

As a therapist if a person is stable, exposure works great. You don’t do it if a person is struggling outside of their phobia. It’s very fast and effective. Arachnophobia, like most phobias, is about 4-6 session to treat. And yes at the end you might touch a spider.
