I don't know if this is the cleanest way to pull off the story but I do think it's ok to have stories with good guys. Maybe this just isn't really the place for it since this is a horror story podcast, we're hoping to see the awful creep stories here, but I'm not mad the story exists.

I think they'd actually be able to understand what the story is trying to say if they didn't attempt to dissect it after every sentence and would actually take in more information at once as one flowing piece

That last sentence doesn't necessarily imply the supernatural. The mc could legitimately just be insane as a result of his trauma. He definitely does catfish women because he thinks he's saving them, but no where is there any confirmation that this actions change anything. His premonitions could very well be plain hallucinations. It's not like any of the women he catfishes are safe for the rest of their lives after showing up to meet him. And if he really had that power to see the future there are far more effective ways he could be going around helping those women. He has to enjoy catfishing and being caught to some extent to continue "saving" them this way.

I'm so disappointed this didn't end with him getting catfished back. What a wasted opportunity.

I normally am a little slow to get the twists in these stories, but I called it in the first minute. When he thinks to himself, "yes," when the person asks if he knew how long it took to get there, I knew it had to be intentionally far from where they lived; his inaction and total detachment from them spoke to this not really being some kind of fetish, but rather some kind of self-perceived act of heroism or something. My guess was he was saving them from some sort of armed robbery attempt that he'd somehow divined and that we'd see a newspaper article revealing that fact later on. Once he had the flashbacks about his dad being a creep, then I'd figured out it was about him saving these women from some sort of domestic abuse scenario, which he'd, again, somehow divined.

Choosing to believe that he’s just mentally unwell and so when he sees a woman on a dating app he has these delusional visions of them getting beaten because of his father so now he has to go on a date w them to “save them” but in reality they were never in danger it’s just his psychosis from childhood abuse.

They're also banned in a lot of schools now, thankfully not until after I graduated because I loved them and they scared the hell out of me, especially Harold the Scarecrow. It would be an awesome grab bag episode, not to mention the artwork by Stephen Gammell is excellent nightmare fuel. Plus: since it was a compilation of stories and folk tales, Alvin Schwartz, the author, did footnotes at the end of the books detailing some of the origins and variations of the stories, etc.

so I think you could read it like the guy is in psychosis and thinks that he's helping these women. I read it kinda like maybe he's trying to protect women from being deceived later on. like and he thinks that's going to prevent them from being in an abusive relationship. the premonition of the girl being beaten could just as easily be a hallucination that he's creating as a means of purpose. like it could all be self inflicted and in that way he is getting off on the humiliation of it kinda bc he feels justified in what he's doing whether or not it's based on actual reality

I think that the ending is the character trying to rationalise what he does under the guise of white knighting. It's shoehorned in because it's his perspective it's him trying to make what he's doing is reasonable. By doing that and "helping" the woman he then gets his validation in that way

I don’t think it is actually implying supernatural. I think its all still a trauma response. He thinks he saved her in this case because the guy beat him down over a little thing, implying he would be abusive in a relationship. The catfishing is an allegory. No one goes into a relationship knowing someone is an abuser. The abuser “catfishes” them in this way. Him catfishing these women in his mind is him saving them by pulling the rug before it actually happens

I liked this story and think the dudes took it too seriously. Guess they wanted themes and such but it’s cute to have one off stories of weird people living out weird lives with like one supernatural twist. The medium is built on stories like this and I think a lot of people would agree its healthy. Plus superpowers were foreshadowed earlier during his dream sequence when his dad was trying to figure out why his son was crying about him hitting mommy before he ever hit the mother when you look back on it, including the encounter with the women in the other women and his dad. Has anyone else felt like the guys are just are taking things too seriously recently? I feel like they would’ve made jokes in the past poking fun with it while appreciating the story for the “meh” energy that it is but now itsss just all so serious. Anyways i am done ranting .

It reads like a mental exercise some incel would’ve come up with to argue in favor of catfishing - “in THIS scenario, it would be okay!” - because they don’t want to admit that catfishing is NEVER okay. It’s like a child who doesn’t want to admit that they were wrong to break a window, so they make up some crap like “but what if the house caught fire and the front door got jammed? Then you’d be happy the window’s broken!” 2. As a woman, if you wanted to rescue me from an abusive scenario, you would NOT have to go to these lengths. In fact, you wouldn’t even have to piss me off. Run up to me and say “don’t ask how I know this, but the man you’re about to go on a date with is a violent psychopath.” I’m cancelling that date STAT because even if I don’t know you, why risk it? I’m not going to sit around thinking “what if I just cancelled a date with my soulmate?” - that’s some high school romcom bs. True spider story. I lived in the valley in California in the outskirts of a city being surrounded by orchards and other farm land. My bus ride to school and back was an hour long each way. Anyway, there were a lot of Black Widows around. I came home near midnight and the house was blacked out with no lights on. I open the front door and the porch light illuminates just past the front door. As I am stepping into the house, my vision focuses on a Black Widow sitting in its web directly infront of the entrance. At face height. I froze in fear, but if I wasnt paying attention, one more step would have had my face walk through a Black Widow and its web in the dark of night.

The insistence that this guy is a psychic despite him clearly being an unreliable narrator and then critiquing that single aspect as if it were definitely true is an odd approach to art criticism.

I think hunter’s original take away is most likely correct. This isn’t a white knight story. It’s clearly someone who for better or worse projected his childhood onto two strangers and then happened to get between them by accident. There is nothing in the text that explicitly supports the idea that he is somehow a hero. Just because he pats himself on the back afterward doesn’t mean the author is propping him up as a moral actor. Especially since up until that point he’s clearly portrayed as someone of poor character. He’s a “nice guy” who likely sees all other men as predatory while also seeking contempt as a maladapted bid for attention from women.

Idk what hunters smoking but the guy is def seeing the future or thinks he is seeing a future of the women being killed and is setting up dates with them at the time to prevent it

Hunters idea of him not knowing what to do when a girl likes him back and love being the thing that destroys him would of been so much better

I actually really enjoyed Hunters interpretation, I thought this concept worked without supernatural elements because it’s such subtle way to show the strange horror that is misogynistic behaviors in life, an “inconvenience” to the women who are catfished in the stories. Most the time in horror or media in general I find that it’s always “yup FUCK WOMEN” instead a genuine look at how hard it may be to see or even note that it is inherently misogynistic. I love the idea of a emotional masochist due to past trauma ! It’s really cool until that super power justification UNLESS it means that he believes he’s seeing premonitions

Very late to the party, but I think this could have worked better if there were a few more catfishes, and after he picks a girl there's flashes of them being brutalized or whatever, without context or prompts like the memories of dad. The complete lack of information on what he does after the date would make it look really shady. You could have a woman reject or stand him up, and see her on the news murdered the next day, which is why he goes to the bar at the end. Then you could still have that last line and it would tie everything together better and make more sense. Still not the best story, but an improvement. But I like the idea of it being a humiliation ritual as well lol

When I was listening I had just assumed that not only was it a fetish thing, but in some sense, he’s “saving” these people, like he wished he could’ve with his mom as a child. In hindsight, you can see how throughout the story it was leaning more towards some kinda supernatural ability, but if you were to remove it all together, and tweak the landing, it could’ve just been an interesting story about abuse and the trauma associated.

YES THEY READ FOREST OF 1,000 LEGS, even through the censors I recognize those themes. That story is so sick I'm so glad they covered it. Yall also check out "The Sounding of the Fifth Trumpet" (no spiders I promise), super cool biblical apocalypse story told in the 2nd person. It does have a couple grammar errors/annoyances with repeating verbage but the themes and concepts explored are some of the most insanely cool topics I've ever read and have seen no where else. I want to see how hunter does the voice of the first "thing" you encounter and his reaction to the body horror. Also I really want to see Isaiah's reaction and breakdown of the biblical themes Absolutely worth yalls time

Like i totally get about the fantasy of saving woman from abusive men in a cop I’ve often wanted to go episode 4 of the walking dead on someone hitting there wife or girlfriend I get the fantasy. Well yes, but imagine: The guy is not psychic. He instead has hallicinations, maybe mild schizophrenia. He has visions of his mom being beat up that never happened. He sees bruises where the're are non. He accuses his dad of abuse and he panics and punches his son. Later, the guy is being a weird ass creep that catfishes women. Not because that is some change of fate, but because he thinks thats what happening. He tvinks by being exemplar of how bad a guy can be, he changes a future that would have never happened anyway. That fills in the lack in empiric evidence of supernatural and how "every night a girl would die" plothole. Thats of course an interpretation with all benefit of the doubt.

Love these guys and im super grateful with how often they put out content, but I've noticed so many editing mistakes in their posts, as a editor i 10000% get that mistakes happen, especially with the turnaround time im sure these guys have, but would probably be more than worth it to have a finishing editor comb through the videos before posting to clean up all of the errors. I've noticed the music missing cuts/cutting in and out at improper times, the visuals either cutting to the story background visual while Hunter and Isaiah are riffing/opposite where it cuts to one of them while the story's being read tons of times. Of course, I only really am bothered by it as an editor and otherwise I probably wouldn't care at all, and getting as much content as we are I can get over it, but I can't help but notice many others are having the same issues, especially with this episode's sound mixing

I think you can ignore the author saying it's flat out supernatural because I think the story reads better if he's just a delusional creep who's trying to make up for his father's sins in this roundabout creepy way. I definitely saw where they were going with the story and I don't think it was out of nowhere. But I do all feel think that the character study of a creepy guy was definitely a cooler angle. I wish I was wrong about the white knight direction and hoped for a story more like Spire in The Woods. Unreliable narrator. He believes he's saving women by taking beatings, like he did for his mom. He's selective about the type of girl he chooses, small and frail. He's saving his mother over and over. His premonitions as well as the belief that he's protecting these women from brutal men are all a part of his own delusion. In his mind he's a hero but elements of the story, like the bits about his coworkers, tell us he's just an insignificant little creep.

There were definitely some level of supernatural hints in the flashbacks where he could see his mother beaten before it even happened where the mother swears it didn't happen. That coming right after the scene where he smiled after hearing that the woman would be gone for another hour. They even noticed how it seemed to stand out. Honestly I think this kind of story having the creepy undertones is more fun in my opinion because he doesn't have the weird extra comforting scenes that overly attractive protagonists do. The character being weirdly happy after each catfish because he saved the girls from abuse. You could also take it a more selfish route where he saves these women because he can't not see the premonitions and in them instead of the men in their life he sees his father and he goes above and beyond to keep himself from experiencing that trauma again. I think if it had more emphasis on his personal motive would help deviate it from the white knight kind of stuff. I also think it's just the current internet landscape that makes this feel so white-knight-esk but at the same time I 100% get it and feel it lol

I don't know where the discussion goes from here, but at 44:00 you are SO WRONG Isaiah. The whole point of the flashbacks is that he's been having the premonitions since he was a kid. He asks why his dad hits his mom and the dad blames the mom, but she says she didn't tell the MC. Then, in the next one, his dad beats him for bringing it up again and he starts to say that he saw it, even though he couldn't have. The whole fucking story has been setting up the ESP angle and I called it after that second dream sequence. Y'all got way too caught up in an earlier reading of the incomplete story and never stopped to reconsider your interpretation, as usual. Still love y'all but that is far and away one of your biggest flaws as interpreters of stories.

The ending was definitely not for me. Though it did make me think that it was a self fulfilling prophecy when he was a kid. His dad wasn’t a great person, but when he was being accused of things he didn’t do yet by his now psychic son. It just pushed him over that edge and he became the monster that was foreseen

The story would have done better if the MC just said he was doing this because he was paranoid women would be hurt if he didn't. At least that implies some sort of psychosis or mental illness and leaves the possibility of the MC inadvertently turning into an abuser like his father down the line, purely due to his genetics and trauma. Even if his "psychic" compulses were all in his head, that would seem so much less out of left field.

Hey there, guys! Author of the story here, just subscribed to read the discussion, and because I love the podcast! So let me clear a few things up. The idea was, that when he was a kid, he had premonitions of his Mom being beaten (which I tried to imply via the flashbacks, but it might not have worked too well). So, the story is essentially, guy is traumatized by the abuse of his Mom, and tries to save other woman from ending up in the same fate, because he can see what happens to them. Now, obviously that's pure white knight fantasy, but I didn't set out to write an incel secretly saving woman. The main inspiration for this was actually a manhwa called 'Annarasumanara' (if you like GOOD emotional stories, you should check it out), and it gave me the idea to write a story about a character that's utterly creepy, but turns out to be good. That was the main idea. I thought what was creepy, and came to Catfishing, thus I started writing it, and thought how to 'change' it for the narrator to be good. Thus, I came up with the fact, he has premonitions about women being abused / killed, and saves them, instead of being an utter creep. I know it's probably not the best story, and I can see people disliking the 'twist' because it's too clean / white knighty, but that was the main idea behind it. That said, I'm still surprised that this one caught on so hard with Reddit, landing at 10k upvotes, because I don't think it's that special, and I have better stuff out there. But yeah, I loved the guys discussing the story, I love you guys discussing it, so thanks for that! All of this really made my day!

This is absolutely not how you write supernatural stuff. A good story is one that shows but doesn't tell, but when you don't even show anything to get the undertones across early or long enough, your story is bad anyway. You have to understand how to tip the reader off to the idea that what they're reading CAN be supernatural, but without plainly telling them or giving it away. A good story makes the reader come up with plausible explanations for things that are happening in the story, WHILE they're reading it, but there wasn't even anything in the beginning aside from a minor blurb about him seeing his mom get hit but she said she didn't, but the way it was written came off as just a kid getting involved for no reason. They didn't play on it long enough to register to the readers.

I went to the drama so my wife would feel obligated to go to the backrooms. I ended up liking the drama more than she did.

My first thought was that he was catfishing them so that they couldn’t potentially get into situations with people like his dad and would be more suspicious of the people they meet, but the supernatural aspect is not where I was expecting it to go and kind of ruined it for me

I think just the word premonition made the guys go immediately to the supernatural when someone can call something a premonition when it's just an assumption. How the story felt to me was he was white knoghting trying to make these women not like dating apps and not risk shady guys. Essentially protecting the trauma of his father on any guy willing to use a dating app. So his premonition was just an assumption plus it still leaves room for it to be a fetishization he wont admit. That "saving" them and the disappointment is a kink but not one he admits to even himself.

As for the story, I think it's nice and refreshing to have a story that at first seems creepy but then turns out to be a happy ending every now and then. Everything you said leading up to the ending is still true, as that's how you're intended to view the character until that turn. It's so easy to make a character compelling with tragedy and horror, but here we have a rare example of using past trauma for positivity instead of negativity. Based on your reactions to the ending, if there were supernatural elements hinted at earlier, you would've hated it no matter what.

So much potential in this one, but ultimately it doesn't deliver. Hamstrung by its r/nosleep origin as well. My favorite outcome would've been him being a creep getting off on catfishing and getting lured in by a monster doing a more literal take on catfishing. Of course, it could've also flourished even under its restraints by taking a potential serial killer route of him imagining the things that would happen to these women, like he wanted to be even worse than his father, making the final girl in the story seem like she is actually going to be his first victim as his anger boils over, then revealing it is childhood trauma.

For those confused: I feel like the boys didn’t realize the significance of the first flashback. Our MC as a child says he saw his dad hit his mom, but the father asks how he knows that since he wasn’t there to see it. And the mother says she didn’t tell him either. Then the second flashback is, again, about the kid seeing the father hit his mother, even though he isn’t there to see it. So there is actually set up for the paranormal part of the story where he can see future abuse. But they just didn’t clock that.

If they *really* want a non-supernatural ending, they can read it as a guy who believes he is seeing visions and believes he is saving these women from a "premonition" that may or may not have actually been the reality. It was absolutely the premonition. Even when he was a child in the flash back, he had a premonition of the dad hitting the mom and that's why the dad was like , "how could you even see that?"

The way that i thought it was going toward the end, until that last line, was that he catfished women to turn them off from online dating, because he has this unresolved obsession of an idea of them inevitably running into a man like his dad through doing it, and so this unhealthy way that he deals with this is by deliberately violating their sense of security, in a way that he feels like hes helping prevent bad things. And that the scene with the guy and the girl would be a validation of that fear, and of his endeavor to do this, which would encourage him to keep catfishing and doing this creepy thing to women, and that this would be the horror element: a person driven to violate boundaries and personal security by a cause that they see as righteous to justify it. But then it was just paranormal foresight and that took away what i was thinking would be an interestihg conclusion on him

I interpreted it as he’s delusional and thinks he’s saving these women from toxic relationships by seeking out women that seem like they are in these cycles of abusive relationships, not that he’s actually having a premonition

I can see being disappointed in the ending but it seems like the guys had a better story in their head than what the author was actually saying. Even though their idea is better I think the author should’ve put more emphasis on what they were going for so the ending wouldn’t hit like a brick wall.

My interpretation is a mix of both of the ideas metioned. Hunters initial and the one you guys landed on. The premonition wasn’t Supernatural. But an effect that his father placed on him. He searches the dating sites finding women his dad would find attractive and catfishes them in hopes to ruin. However small. Their perception of men. Though I do like hunters idea the most. That’s what I landed on

The author knows for certain, but I think you're trying too hard for there to be a supernatural element when the narrator probably has an untreated mental illness. Going through abuse at the hands of his father and losing his mother with only his abusive father for support? That'd mess anyone up. Because his father was a physically attractive man in his youth, his mother was lured in and abused. He sees his father in every man and his mother in every woman. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he used his father's photos from when he was younger as his dating profile. The narrator probably thinks that making the dates a bad experience, he's doing now what he could never do before, and preventing his mother from getting with his father. The "premonitions" are paranoid delusions/hallucinations. I'm probably reading too far into it, but that reads better than the story being mundane and then suddenly supernatural at the end.

I agree with Isaiah. I think that is what is happening. I thought it was like Frailty the whole time but I think it was opposite.

very interesting experience with this one where i knew i had read this story before, couldn't remember how it ended, but knew without a doubt that it wasn't gonna be what they wanted anyway

Seems obvious to me when the dad is beating him as a kid and he said "I keep seeing it" and the dad told him he would keep beating him if he kept saying he sees his dad beating his mom to death. The mom is crying in the other room because he told him about his vision seeing her dead and bloody at his dad's feet. Then he goes out protecting women by catfishing them so they don't contact the future abuser. You guys just totally didn't notice the obvious reference to him having visions of his mom as a kid dying

I read this story as a guy who tries to waste girls times from dating wife beaters like his dad. By catfishing as a handsome dude... So when he thought of the 1 hour train home was him "saving her". Bro got beat up at the end and smiled cause he "saved" her from an abusive guy like his father.

I thought it was gonna be that he was catfishing women that were similar to his dad's type to prevent them from being abused (like turning them away from dating/dating apps because of catfishing). I truly was loving it until the psychic twist it just felt whatever. When the dude ended up beating the MC I truly thought it was gonna go that direction and then it became le psychic. Like you guys said the dialog really was strong for the story but that ending leaves such a bad taste in the mouth.

I like how in the beginning they just go straight into spoilers of past episodes for them, but that havent come out yet for us

I liked the story, didn’t as much like the psychic twist at the end. With the flashbacks I was foreseeing that he was doing this specifically because in his head he was doing it to put the women off online dating, and that way they’d be less likely to end up with someone like his dad. Like a weird delusional thing, where he thought that’s what he was doing and how it was happening, but it was all purely mental gymnastics on his side. The only part I didn’t really like was the psychic part, because it would have been a more open ending if you didn’t really know if his actions did help put someone off online dating, or if he was a complete creep.

A thing to add, i'm pretty sure it was implied at the beginning that when he asked his dad why he hit mom, that was a premonition of the future. Then it mention that later on his mom passes away. We can make the assumption that the dad killed the mom in a drunken rage, and he saw it before it happened. I also think it's supposed to be inferred that he's been able to do this his whole life, but it wasn't very clear. I prefer your take on it anyways!

Tbh from the first time the girl said at the beginning it was going to take her an hour to get home and he smiled i was like "oh maybe she was supposed to die like in a car accident or something and hes using these dates to inconvenience people and save their lives" and then when the first story of his dad abusing his mom and his dad saying "theres no way you saw that" I thought that yeah he didnt physically see it but he had a vision of it. And so the entire story i was thinking it would end how the author ended it, basically these dates being a way to save peoples lives. Not saying thats an amazing story but I think the supernatural element is already given to you at the beginning of him having no way of seeing his mom's abuse but seeing it in a vision. Idk if id call it a white knight scenario more like this guy was completely traumatized by his dad abusing his mom and now he tries to save people. Its fine. I dont love the story but its a neat concept. Glad we got an episode today great way to end the work day

I think the ending was just proving the narrator is a crazy redditor. There isn’t any other evidence of supernatural elements throughout the story, so I think the buildup is just showing that he’s crazy and justifying a creepy fetish.

I think he's doing it as a way to teach them a lesson, he cat fishes them and doesn't defend himself to show they shouldn't be so easy and vulnerable, he even mentions how easy it was to get her to agree to the date he is white knighting by thinking he's saving them from making the same mistakes in the future

This had such good potential to be a story using a cool unreliable narrator technique and the author blew his load straight into the trash

How do they not understand what happened in this story? The boy saw visions of the mom getting beat, so now he uses the visions of the girls being beat and catfishes them to get them out of the situation.

The supernatural stuff wasnt totally out of nowhere cause as a child he says he saw his mom getting hit but his mother swears she didn't tell him about it and then shes beaten worse because of his words. The way I see it hes doing this weird catfish rescuing women because hes making up for causing his mom to get hit more. Still would have perfered no magic but it wasnt completely out of nowhere.

Hunters idea of how this story goes is much better than the actual story
