What it Really Takes to Sail the World! (BTS, Finances, Maintenance etc)

This week might just be one of our most in-demand episodes... After so many comments and questions over the years, Riles and I finally decided to let you in on all the behind-the-scenes realities of what it actually takes to run Sailing La Vagabonde!

If you’ve ever dreamed of setting sail yourself, or just wondered how we keep this big floating dream moving week after week (without completely losing it lol), this one's for you!

In this episode, we’re talking about the gear that keeps us going, the small (but mighty) team working with us behind the scenes, the honest truth about our budget, and the kind of maintenance that never makes it into the weekly videos. It’s the real stuff... maintaining a blue water vessel, what needs constant attention, how Riles and I plan our days, how we manage filming and editing with two kids onboard, and everything in between 😅

As always, we simply couldn’t do any of this without your support (as you’ll see in this ep. lol), and we’re so grateful for all the encouragement you’ve shown us both... especially as we navigate through some of the most remote corners of the world.

Love,
Elay, Riley, Lenny & Darwin x

Great Episode. The BTS is a good addition, you did it in a way to say thank you to the team and present them. The Elay-Riley exchanges on who-does-what, super interesting. Elay sitting sharing and boosting a video you care about... makes you approachable and authentic. Team appearances from Lydia and Jai, added personal angles. Jai 's table mattress combo. Awesome Keep up this spirit, I think you nailed it with this one. Music, storytelling, everything awesome.

Perfection ! When you add the little things usually not included in the videos, and BTS stuff, it makes everything more real, and I love it.

Yeaaay, huge thumbs up for the BTS style. The boys are developing so quickly these days… they are such a credit to you, your parenting and your lifestyle; having the ocean and islands for an educational experience is beyond compare and Lydia is so calm and seems to have a lovely dynamic with them, as do you all.

Perfection may remain your elusive raison d’etre. No worry. Y'all are figuring it all out pretty darn well. It is good that you remind us that, while your videos may suggest that each day is a sunny walk in the park, the reality is that it takes great orchestration to do what y’all are doing. I rewatched an early video when y’all were approaching the Canary Islands. Elena was trying to prepare a lunch of sandwiches……….doing so with the degree of difficulty cranked to 10+ by an ever shifting work surface due to wave surge. Ah, the joy of monohull sailing! I could not stop laughing.

Hey legends, apologies for the access issue. We tried a new auto-scheduling tool and it accidentally made the ep private instead of unlisted. All sorted now, so you should be able to watch. Thanks for bearing with us! 🙏

Same sort of. Saw it posted, but when I came back a few hours later when I had time to watch, it turned "private." Guess I'll have to wait a little longer for the awesomeness.

Another great video. Day to day. Decisions, decisions. It takes a village to support a YouTube channel. Well done guys.

That was an amazing episode. The personal nature of it made it special. It really was great to just see the nature of what it takes to crank the wheels of what it takes to do the what needs doing of production and "business" of covering expenses. I also enjoyed the details of a deeper peek into the division of tasks. It was also good to see details of the "protections" Youtube puts out there for the boys without shirts. On the one hand it seems almost silly. On the other hand it is a reminder of those dark corners of some people's minds. Again, thank you for pulling back the stage curtain to reveal the production processes and pieces. Fair winds and God bless!

I’m always so sad when your videos end … love following your lives. The deep blue ocean fascinates and terrifies me so seeing it from the safety of my iPad screen means I don’t have to miss out … might do a sail through the Whitsundays one day !!!??
