The finale „To the Moon and Back” starts right where episode 9 ended: with Chan proposing the Key – with earrings; Key accepts the proposal right away, while Chanya stands up, but doesn’t intervene. After the credits, Chanya strikes back and fires Key’s band from the club. Chan argues that she’s doing this to punish her, and not fer the hotel’s interests, but Key holds her back and doesn’t want to argue with her mother any further. Chan argues that her mother is not going to get her way with them by doing this. But Chanya argues she’s doing everything for her and argues that Key is not a good match for her, with Chan asking who gets to decide that for her. Can’t she even choose her partner for herself? Chanya then asks if Chan loves Key more than her and argues that she’s changed since she met Key, she isn’t the same daughter she used to know. Chan and Key leave. Key thinks that this is getting out of hand, and claims her mother will never accept her. She thinks she is putting Chan in a tight spot and doesn’t want to be selfish and cause a rift between Chan and Chanya. But Chan tells to not give up and not leave her, claiming Chan will never give up on Key. She believes that they will find a way to win Chanya over as long as they hold on to each other. Key claims that her fiancée is so cool and this is so touching. Chan tells her to quit joking, but Key can’t help herself, she claims. They pinky-promise each other that they will never give up on each other. They go to Key’s family, who is elated that they’re getting married, but wonder what Chan is going to do about her mother. Key and Chan are counting on a silver bullet to solve the problem, but don’t go into details, they just claims that it’s someone that no one would have expected. As Chanya is strolling through Chan’s condo she encounters Simba, who has been placed there with a note “Mom, please take care of Simba for me.” Chanya argues to herself that knows that she is allergic to cats, and chases the cat away, but Simba then just goes to her room. Phu and Jay sit together in a café, and Phu claims he’s been sitting there for almost an hour, just as Jay breaks the silence by claiming so this is what it feels like to watch her ex getting married, arguing Chan probably felt the same back then, with Phu arguing that she was in a much worse shape than Jay. Jay thinks that this is karma catching up with her. Phu excuses himself for the restroom, and Elle comes over surprised to find Jay drinking coffee, because she thought she only drank alcohol. She sits down opposite to Jay, teases her about her ex getting married, and asks if that is why she look so dejected. She wants her to face the truth, and asks her how long is she going to hold on to her ex. Jay claims it none of her business, but Elle claims that she’s saying this because she means well. Jay claims she will get over it eventually, as she still has her pride. Elle asks if she feeling down because she’s trying to get over her, and claims she likes that Jay is trying to get over Chan. Jay wants to know that Elle wants from her and why is she meddling in her business. Elle claims she has a lot of free time and she’s doing this to kill time. She then invites Jay to a meal as a reward. Jay claims that she’s there with Phu, but Phu doesn’t mind – so they both leave, with Phu claiming Jay needs someone like Elle. Elle takes her to a place where Moo Krata (which literally means “pan pork,” a dish cooked by the guests on their own table), which Elle claims that everyone always celebrates with. Jay claims that grilled pork is bad for your health, but Elle counters this argument with the fact that Jay gets dunk every day. Jay argues that this is too much trouble and prefers them grill it for her, but Elle argues that she needs to step out of her comfort zone to get new perspectives. Jay claims that she is not falling for Elle’s life-coach-like behavior, but Elle wants her to stop complaining and start eating. Jay tastes some and is surprised cause it didn’t look like she would like it. Elle calls her a little princess who has been living is her ivory tower for too long, and tells her that she needs to step out and see the real world. If she keep holding on to the same old things and clings to the past, she argues, she will never know if there is something better waiting for her. Even if her life is not perfect, it’s not that terrible, and learning to live with her small mistakes is not a bad thing. Jay wants to know if Elle is hitting on her, but she claims that she is saying this because she wants to be her friend. As her new friend, she wants her to stop clinging to the past, as she may lose Chan as a friend. She need to face the truth and let it go. Elle asks her if she really wants to lose a good friend like Chan. She wants to feed her grilled pork as a sign for the official beginning of their friendship, which she eventually eats, then wants Jay to feed her, which also does and thus completes the friendship ceremony. They calls each other strange, and Elle tells her she loves her – as a friend. They continue to eat, and Jay’s disposition improves. Chan thinks she was wrong about her mother, because neither her nor Simba are visible on the CCTV cameras in her condo. They return home, but can’t find them there either. Key thinks that Chanya wouldn’t do anything to Simba, but Chan is afraid the her mother is do determined to make her give in that she doesn’t care about anything else. She claims she never been this drastic before, but this time she might be wrong about her. Chanya then comes in with Simba whom she took to a groomer, and she also bought a new cat tower and ordered an automatic litter box for him. She also bought outfits for the rainy season and winter, arguing he doesn’t need outfits for the summer. She wants Key to get them from her car. She also calls Simba ‘sweetie,’ who is wearing sunglasses. Chan later wants to talk to Chanya about her marriage with Key, and Chany tells her that if she wants her blessing, she has a condition: Key must live with her for one week, so she can thoroughly evaluate her, and Key can’t contact Chan at all while she is living with her. Chan is worried, but Key accepts right away. Chanya wants to take Simba with her, and Key agrees to that as well. Chan still doesn’t want to do it, but her mother claims that if Key doesn’t pass her evaluation, she won’t allow the marriage. Key wants to call Chanya ‘mother,’ and Chanya agrees to it – if she passes. Key and Chanya shake hands on it. Chan talks to Phu and she tells them about the deal that Chanya and Key made. Phu thinks it’s a good sign, but Chan is worried because she can’t talk to Key. Phu tells her to hang in there to get her blessing. Phu then tells her that she doesn’t need to worry about Jay anymore, and he hopes that Jay and Chan can be friends again. Chan wakes up alone in her bed, and she is missing Key; she thinks about calling or texting her. Chan keeps looking at her phone as she meets Peach who claims that Key will be fine, she is sure that she can win Chanya over. She is a nice girl, she claims, and everyone who gets to know her can’t help but fall for her. She argues that Chan must miss Key very much. We get another scene of Chan missing and trying to call Key, but Key doesn’t pick up. Eventually, She wakes up to find Key snuggled up to her in bed again, and she claims Key is holding her tight, with Key claiming it’s because she misses her. Chan misses her as well, then asks how was it. Did she win her mother over? Key answers the question by calling her ‘mother,’ then claims it was thanks to Simba for whom Chanya is falling hard. If she got upset, Key just handed her the cat, she claims, and soon she would forget it. Simba, Key explains, will stay for a few more days with Chanya, and Chan warns that she might take him to live with her, but Key feels bad for her, and mention she even built a cage so Simba can enjoy the garden. Chan guesses that they will need to adopt another cat. Chan wants Key to stay with her every day, and claims that just waking up with already makes her happy. Key feels the same way, and they kiss. Chan asks Key where she wants to go on their honeymoon, and Key claims that anywhere is fine with her, as long as Chan is with her. Chan claims that she has been to several counties in Europe as she traveled a lot, and Key wants to know whom she traveled with – with Jay? Chan admits it, and key asks if she can be jealous. Chan claims that she can, but doesn’t want her to get mad about it – because she isn’t good at making up. Key then gets mad at her to get her to try making up. 😊Key then wants her to talk to her like a big sister, and this eventually gets Key to relent. Jay call, and Key lets her talk to her, because she trust her. Shortly thereafter, they meet in person, and Jay thanks her for coming, because she thought she was afraid that Key would feel uncomfortable, but Chan claims that key is okay with it. To be honest, she was the one who told her to meet her. Jay thinks she should thank her for letting her meet Chan, and she isn’t being sarcastic about it. Jay report that the last time they talked, Chan wanted her to go back to the old her, and she will do exactly that. She wants to clear the air for Chan’s peace of mind, and for her own. All that time, she was holding on to the past and did everything to get her back, and put her in a difficult position. It was also painful for her, she claims. But now, she knows what the right thing is: she has to let her go, so that she can start a new chapter. She is sorry for everything she did to her, both in the past and the present. Chan doesn’t need to forgive her, but will she accept her apology? Chan tells her that she forgives her. Jay wants to be friends with Chan, and Chan agrees, but argues that it will take some time. Jay gets it, and leaves smiling. Six months later, Chan and Jay are in wedding dresses, but we find out that their wedding was one month ago. They kiss as Jay arrives, who has something to tell – both of them: She wants to thank them very much for holding a wedding again, so that she can attend it and congratulate Chan and Key. Chan claims this ‘second wedding’ is only for friends and close acquaintances, but Jay is really happy to see them getting married, and wishes them all the happiness. Chan is glad that Key isn’t jealous, but Key claims she is hers now and shows her ring. And they kiss again. The wedding celebration consists of Phu, Game, Elle, Jay, and a number of unnamed guests and contains a singing performance of “Moonkey” by Key/Bonnie and Chan/Emi . After that, Elle asks how she feels when seeing them, and Jay claims she feels nothing, they look good together. Elle wants to know if Jay wants to get married when she sees them, and Jay claims she was married before and wants to live her own life. Elle asks her if she wants to marry her, but Jay tells her to save that pickup line for another girl. And of course, the wedding ends with kiss. The final scene of the series is with Chan and Key who are (supposedly) on honeymoon where they declare themselves to be each other’s tattoo, and Key admits that she never imagined that she would have this day, she thought that she could only be her shadow. Who would have thought that they would get married? But she argues that being her shadow isn’t that bad, claiming she would follow her everywhere, like the shadow of the Moon (name-drop!). They claim that they cannot live without each other, with Key claiming that without a moon, there would be no shadow, and Chan claiming she wouldn’t be her without Key. She wants them to spend the rest of their lives together, a calls her “her wife” – which is still unusual for Key, but Chan tells her she should get used to it, for it is her status. Key claims that she got a big promotion from ‘sugar baby’ to ‘wife.’ She wants to know with she should call her, and Chan proposes ที่รัก (darling), and wants to hear it again. With a kiss and “I love you”s, the series ends. ____ This was a finale that delivered all the expected points, but felt odd to me. I think that the decision to ditch the wedding and instead show us an after-wedding celebration of sorts must have something to do with the actors of the family members not being available, as must be the case with Chanya disappearing mid-episode and getting reports of her time with Key only by Key reporting about it afterwards. They also gave Jay a kind of hopeful ending (which I guess wasn’t part of the novel) and ditched Sun completely for the finale – which I understand because Emi isn’t actually a twin, but I would have expected her to show up again at least once. Thus, the episode did what it had to do, but delivered nothing else and left pretty much everyone else’s storyline apart from the three main characters unfinished. I’m giving “Moonshadow” a 7.5 or a “C+” in U.S. letter grades as an excellent depiction of grief, but underdeveloped in any other aspect.
