Well, we've got our answer: 50 Shades of Grey's Jamie Dornan, from Ireland. He was both great and badass in the WW2 true story Anthropoid, and, at 43 today, seems about the right age to play a roughly Fellowship-era Viggo (who was 40 at the time of filming LotR). I gotta say, this strikes me as pretty much perfect casting: Dornan is someone the public already knows, even if only indirectly, but he isn't a big enough star to be distracting. Whether the movie will have enough story to justify its existence very much remains to be seen, but I think just about everyone will be happy with Dornan, and that's a big win I did not see coming. Well played, Jackson and Co., well played. If you haven't seen Anthropoid, about the mission to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich, it's currently on Kanopy, and I highly recommend it. It also serves as a de facto sequel to the HBO film Conspiracy, in which Kenneth Branagh plays Heydrich, and those two movies would make one helluva double bill.
Interesting - yeah I saw the casting but I'm not familiar with the actor. I agree that, whatever ends up happening, it's best that they didn't choose a huge star. And the age seems appropriate.
Using an idiom coming from my country: too much water has passed under the bridge. I would rather have none of the previous actors in the new film. A mix of previous involved actors and new one for the same characters of the past films would disctract the audience and come in the way of a pleasent immersion.
