Sixth engine supported, and Babelith is no longer just for patrons
I've got two big things to share, plus a list of fixes that came from you.
đ TyranoScript: the sixth engine
It all started with a game that the tool didn't recognize. It wasn't Ren'Py, RPG Maker, Unity, Godot, or GameMaker: it was TyranoScript, the Japanese visual novel engine, and on top of that, the entire game was contained in a single 745 MB file.
It's now supported. You drag and drop the game, and it works, with the same workflow as alwaysâit opens in the RPG Maker tab, which is where it fits.
Regarding the game I tested it on:
Translated phrases: 5,884
Menu options: 373
Time: Approximately 10 minutes
Those 373 menu options deserve a mention: in TyranoScript, they aren't embedded in the dialogue but hidden within the commands, and an extractor that only looks at the lines of text will leave them intact. The game would end up translated with all the menus in Japanese, and it would appear as if the tool wasn't working.
And if something goes wrong, there's an undo button. A copy of the original is saved before anything is changed, and "Delete translation" returns the game exactly as it was.
𧥠Babelith: 3 games per week for the free tier
Until now, Babelithâthe live translation while you playâwas only for those who support the project. The problem is obvious from an outsider's perspective: if you've never tried it, you have no way of knowing if it's worth it.
So, those who support the project for free on Patreon now get 3 games per week with Babelith. No cuts: it's the same Babelith.
Two details I've taken care of intentionally:
It counts different games, not installations. If you reinstall the same gameâbecause a new version of the mod came out, or because you uninstalled it to try it outâit doesn't use up any resources. The week is counted on a rolling basis, the last 7 days. No more being left hanging on Sunday waiting for Monday. Those who support at any payment level continue to have no limit, as before.
đ What you reported, fixed. This batch came almost entirely from people writing to say "this isn't working for me." Keep doing it, that's what makes this work.
The text was piling up in the dialogue box. Spanish and Japanese appeared overlapping, unreadable, and it fixed itself when moving to the next message. The logical suspicion was the translation, but the translation itself was fine: out of almost 20,000 phrases, zero were empty and zero were untranslated. The problem was the renderingâsome widely used message box plugins (YEP_MessageCore) don't clear the box before rewriting it, and the translation was being overwritten.
The translated game wouldn't start. Japanese uses angle bracketsâ"like this"âwhich aren't quotation marks. The translator was converting them into regular double quotes, and those quotes were splitting the game commands in half.
Black screen on startup. In TyranoScript, the visible name of a character and the identifier the game uses to reference them are different things. It was translating the identifier, so the game was searching for characters that no longer existed.
Words were running together. "Take a look inside" appeared as "takealookinside." I liked this one: it wasn't our doing. TyranoScript removes spaces within commandsâit's in its own codeâand no one had noticed it for years because Japanese doesn't use spaces. The bug appears precisely when translating to a language that does.
And nine more that I found while reviewing, before you received them.
đź Next up: Babelith for TyranoScript
With TyranoScript, the standard translation already covers practically all the textâI measured it: 96.8% is written exactly as it is in the filesâso Babelith isn't here to rescue anything.
It's here for something else, and that's what interests me: translating without touching the game files. No rewriting, no backups, no risk of a game update wiping out your translation. You install, you play, and the original game remains intact underneath.
No release date yet. First, I want what I just released to last a few days in your hands.
How to update
Download the latest version from the usual link. If you already have it open, it will notify you automatically.
And if anything breaks, let me know. You found the four bugs above by opening the game, not me with my tests: you can verify that a file is perfectly fine and the game still doesn't start. You can only see that by playing.
Thanks for being there. đ§Ą
