Ah I really love ERB's singing. Her performance of Ride on Time with Nerissa was just beautiful!
If you want to get into city pop, I feel like you have got to listen to gawr gura's "right on time", it's this but more. This is barley comparable.
So singing in Japanese is super easy like it turns out that people can sing better when hey sing in an alternate language. They tend to try and sing the phonetics without understanding anything. I think it stems from the fact that you have no idea weather you are fucking up or not. But there are literal cases where some random English dude dominates a tournament strictly because he doesn't understand the language.
4 power house of Hololive English, one from each generation
City Pop is a distinctly Japanese music genre that swept the nation in the 70's and 80's. Many anime shows (and almost every single romance anime) from late 70's to early 90's have City Pop soundtracks as their opening and/or ending song. It might be worth actually just doing a City Pop livestream day so we could suggest several dozen different ones for you to check out on stream. In addition, due to Gawr Gura and Hoshou Marine of Hololive being huge fans of the genre, City Pop had a bit of a revival in Hololive in recent years. One of my favourite anime from the 80's - Kimagure Orange Road is a supernatural romantic comedy that has 3 different openings, all 3 are City Pop, one of the 3 endings is also City Pop (the other 2 are Synth-pop and urban disco electro-funk). Little trivia: Gawr Gura sang "Ride on Time" as her very first song live during her debut to show everyone that she wasn't just a memer and a gremlin, but had genuinely amazing smooth, sultry voice.
Put together a City Pop bundle if anyone wants to check it out and heart it on the requests page.
Thanks for the reaction, Tim! It seems my scheme to convert you into a Rosarian is working as planned hehe. Joking aside, she’s, as always, an absolute powerhouse and I’m glad you see her as one as well as recognizing the complexities and varieties in her singing. Her talents are just absurd. But, believe it or not, you’re barely scratching the surface as a lot of her karaoke performances are even beyond what you saw here. I’ll lay off from requesting a Vol 3 for a while, but I’ll be sure to suggest stuff if anything new from her (or featuring her) comes out!
Hopefully you get to them sometime for a taste of City Pop, but a while back I requested Miki Matsubara "Mayonaka no Door" aka "Stay with Me" one of the most well known and covered City Pop songs in existence as well as Mori Calliope and Kobo's first toe dip into City Pop with their song Midnight Mayoi.
City pop is a genre I really fell in love with! Hopefully you will check out some famous city pop songs in the future!
As a Japanese-American, PSG is one of the only anime where I prefer the English dub track over the Japanese dub track. They did a phenomenal job with the script and acting and it really captures the characters perfectly. It's a fun show that's about 2 fallen angels, the Anarchy sisters, that were kicked out of Heaven and their misadventures protecting the human world from ghosts and demons trying to earn their way back. Their names are Panty Anarchy and Stocking Anarchy and are guided by a priest named Garterbelt that guides them as part of his repentance for past misdeeds. I didn't think I was going to like it at first because the first half of the first episode is a poop episode with poop jokes, but I'm glad I stuck it out, because it was fantastic.
I can't wait for you to get to IRyS next week! She has one of the clearest and crispest voices you'll ever hear
Talking about City Pop syle songs. why Mori and Kobo have a City Pop style song already made and its been requested on the app as well
Panty and Stocking is an irreverent mad-cap comedy anime about a pair of fallen angels who fight demons with their delicates transformed into weapons. Best way to describe it is if Quentin Tarantino directed Powerpuff Girls. It's a bit naughty, but not explicit. Mostly suggestive and dirty jokes. https://youtu.be/aqJd5OUAJ18?is=FExPRmEXcBy4cc7s
If you want more City Pop, Nerissa's EP is great. The Persona game soundtracks are also full of city pop tracks. Battle tracks are electronic rock, but a lot of the "walking around" music is city pop and jazz.
Which EP?
For the Natori song, I know you listened to “Overdose” like a year ago or so
Love listening to ERB
I’m so glad you got a bit of a teaser for IRyS (she is indeed that higher pitched voice you heard in Start Again) and are going to be doing a dive into her music next week! She is one of my favourite Holo artists alongside Suisei
Welcome to City Pop. It’s a really fun genre most famously known for the song “Mayonaka no Door” or “Stay with Me” by Miki Matsubara, an iconic piece of Japanese music history.
Ohh that reminds me that Ironmouse covered "stay with me" a while ago. i might have to request that now, or see if it has been requested
Shortened versions of songs are callbacks to anime opening (OP) and ending (ED) versions. The last song you studied was used as a OP to the story arc of Hololive's Enigmatic Recollection, which was treated like a standalone anime, where all the participants created a persona as if they were transported to a new world and lost their memory, and had to embark on a jouurney to rediscover their previous life and memories. Lots of drama and hilariity ensued.
All hail FaunMart
So City Pop is, or was, a fairly unique sound to japanese music of the early 80's. It's survived on as it's own genre of music in japan. It pulled inspiration for it's sound from American boogie, smooth jazz, funk and disco of the late 70's. The closest thing we have to it in america would probably be yacht rock I think is what it's called. It is truly a vibe and would be totally down for looking into it.
One of my favorite Anime, YuYuHakusho has a city pop opening and it’s incredible in English and Japanese! Smile Bomb is so fun!
