Updated: Kola Map .xml for CombatFlite

Following a recent DCS Kola Theater update, three airfields have been added:

• ESUT - Hemavan Airport

• ESNX - Arvidsjaur Airport

• ESPG - Boden Heliport

You'll find attached the updated .xml file for use in CombatFlite.

Don't forget that the most up-to-date version of every theater is maintained in a single post. Note that following last summer's Patreon update, older posts cannot be updated anymore, and I cannot add the .xml files to the original theater packages. Sorry for the inconvenience...

Regarding the new airfields, we can note that they are all located in Sweden, and they start populating the SW corner of the map: we're moving in the right direction!

Let's have a quick look at each airport.

I. ESUT - Hemavan Airport

Hemavan Airport has a single 1 600-meter 15/33 runway that currently serves mainly regional civilian traffic and tourism toward the Scandinavian mountains. Although not a military installation, its remote position close to the Norwegian border gives it a strategic flavor, especially if we keep in mind that in the Cold War, Sweden’s air-defense concept relied heavily on dispersal and redundancy. The Bas 90 doctrine envisioned that civilian airfields across the north could receive fighter detachments in case of conflict. We can therefore consider that Hemavan would have been a potential diversion airfield.

II. ESNX - Arvidsjaur Airport

Arvidsjaur has a standard NATO paved runway, suitable for jet operations. The airport became operational in 1990, and was originally part of Sweden’s Cold War northern defense belt. The fall of the Soviet Union marked an halt to its development.

Even if Arvidsjaur never became a formal airbase, its runway length, fuel capacity, and surrounding infrastructure would have allowed it to function as a wartime dispersal field. Recently, the Swedish Air Force and NATO have used the area for Arctic training, military aircraft are regularly deployed there.

III. ESPG - Boden Heliport

Boden Heliport is located near the historic garrison town of Boden. The site is directly tied to one of Sweden’s most important military centers. Since the early 20th century, Boden Fortress guarded the northern approaches to Sweden with an extensive network of fortifications, artillery positions, and later, radar and command posts.

During the Cold War, Boden remained the core of the Swedish Army’s northern defense, housing several regiments and serving as a hub for helicopter training and support units from 1959 onward.Even if the heliport is nowadays closed, it has authentic historical roots as part of Sweden’s rotary-wing and logistics infrastructure.
